Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Commonly referred to as the workhorse of the pros, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED from Nikon is a versatile standard zoom characterized by its bright and sophisticated optical design. The constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent performance and illumination throughout the zoom range, and suits working in low light and for working with selective focus techniques. Three precision glass molded aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce a high degree of sharpness and clarity. Also benefitting image quality, both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. Additionally, complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor affords fast and precise autofocus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to benefit both stills and video applications.

Standard zoom is designed for FX-format F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.
Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus techniques.
Three aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color accuracy.
Both a Nano Crystal Coat and a Super Integrated Coating have been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 1798.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp Sharp lens! I do not usually write product reviews but I love this lens so much that I felt that I had to say something. I like to shoot with prime lenses and was using Nikon 50mm and 85mm, 1.4 lenses. I wanted a zoom lens that was more utilitarian so I purchased the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lend without VR. I was torn between buying the VR version and after some of the reviews on that lens decided to get the Non VR version. I could not be happier! The color rendition is excellent and it is sharp, really sharp. Because it's f2.8 I never have to shoot slower that 200th of a second so handheld motion just really is not an issue. Do yourself a favor and get this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Zoom Lens I generally refuse to use zoom lenses as I am pathologically obsessive about sharpness. I have tested this lens against Nikon's fixed focal length 50mm standard lens and my famous rangefinder 50mm. It is not quite as sharp as the rangefinder lens, but compares favorably to the Nikon 50mm. I have enlarged images to greater than 16x20 with excellent resolution and definition. This zoom is terrific as a standard lens replacement and is every bit as sharp as the standard 50. I have read the negative reviews above, but can only think they got a bad individual lens or that the application of the lens was faulty. This is a terrific piece of complex glass

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why I waited so long I was on market for 24-70 lens for some time now. I use a Tokina 28-70 and I was happy with the picture. However I'm person who likes the good stuff since life is to short to buy sh... I pull a trigger on the Nikon 24-70 and this lens blow my mind is sharp at any focal length and aperture. The zoom is light fast. I tested it for two weeks and took 2000 pictures. I thought about the new tokina 24-70 the focus speed and other factor set up m mind on Nikon. No regret, fantastic lens. I think that over the years they improved few things. No problems with the zoom ring, autofocus etc. If you can afford it buy it instead of 3rd party lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW This lens is so nice, the 3 photographers working with me want one. I was taking 15 to 30 sec exposures of mountain bike racers at night with rear curtain sync flash. The HID (high intensity) lights were causing horrible reflections in the lenses of the other photographers, to the point that they were not sellable images but this lens performed perfectly. I got great images and I'm thrilled to death. The lens is worth every penny. My portraits look fantastic too. The lens is larger than my 17-55 but when you're used to caring 2.8 lenses (like the 80-200 and 300) this one is a walk in the park and it even comes with a great (even if it's bulky) carry case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just got back from Yosemite. Bought this lens for multiple reasons especially for a week in Yosemite. It spent most of the time on a D4S. I use it for many different shots including time lapse. Downloading every night I saw what I thought were good images. After observing the images it spent most of the rest of the trip on my camera. Last night I did a review on the big screen and was completely blown away by the crispness even in low light situations. I do own a 14-24 which is still my favorite lens, but if that went down I would be very happy with my backup? I agree it is heavy but what quality lens is not?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp and fast lens I just received this lens out of the box with D750. I have own the D800E, afs 14-24 f2.8g, afs 85 f1.8g, and tried canon's own 135L and 85 f1.2L on 5D3 and also sony 55mm on A7r and A7ii and I know what is sharp when I see one. This is definitely one of the fastest, sharpest and most accurate zoom I have used. I've also owned the the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC and it is a very sharp, good lense. AF speed wise this lens beats the VC hands down. Contrast, color, bokeh, this lens is worth the price difference to the VC. If you shoot 1/FL shutter speed, lack of VR is not an issue. VR do not compensate for motion blur.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another winner from Nikon's stable With a consistency one expects from professional Nikon products, this lens maintains the expected high standard. Speed, ruggedness and ease of use typify this professional lens, with bright, edge-to-edge clarity and sharp results even at its widest aperture (f2.8). The lens quickly alters focus, including follow-focus, without missing a beat, even in low light. A minor flaw (common to all autofocus lenses however) is finding focus where texture and colour between 2 surfaces is almost identical. However, this is a minor consideration when the lens is being used for reportage close-in. All in all, a reliable, quality product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lense although expensive I was a little skeptical about getting this lense at the price it is, but after receiving it I can't stop shooting with it. I am using it on a D700. The focus is EXTREMELY fast and very accurate and the manual overide is a nice feature for some of the shooting I do. The lense shoots wide open with very little distortion, anything less than that is absolutely beautiful. I shoot a lot of low light, natural light, and night shots, this lense is, so far, proving to be excellent for the task. The only drawback is that it's large and HEAVY. It just about dwarfs my D700. That being said, I'd order this lense in a heartbeat if I had to do it over again.
