Nikon 600mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

The AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a high performance fast super telephoto prime lens for Nikon F mount cameras. It is compatible with both FX- and DX-format DSLRs and provides 900mm focal length equivalence on DX-format cameras. It is a robust and durable lens incorporating a magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing allows it to be used in more rugged situations. It is extraordinarily long reaching and is effective for drawing in distant subjects and serves well those involved in sports and wildlife photography as well as other ultra-telephoto applications.

This lens features the improved Vibration Reduction (VR II) image stabilization system that reduces the blur caused by camera shake, something particularly effective when shooting in dim light at such a long focal length. In addition, this lens also features the Tripod Detection mode, which reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release, when mounted on a tripod.

The internal focus system and Silent Wave Motor enable fast, precise and near-silent autofocus action and direct manual focus override provides immediate access to precise manual focus by simply rotating the focus ring. In addition, a focus limiter switch, focus lock and AF memory recall buttons offer more convenient control of focus placement. Three extra-low dispersion glass elements incorporated into the optical design correct chromatic aberrations and the use of Nano Crystal and Super Integrated lens coatings reduce flare and ghosting.

A built-in rotating tripod/monopod collar offers stability and filtering is provided with a 52mm drop-in style filter holder. A two-piece lens hood is included as is a large trunk-style carrying case.

High-powered, super telephoto lens optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX- and DX-format image sensors.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization enables shooting at up to 2.5 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible for dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
Tripod detection mode reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release when mounted on a tripod.
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocus with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation.
A focus limiter switch, focus lock and AF memory recall buttons enable faster and more accurate control of focus placement.
Exclusive Nano Crystal and Super Integrated lens coatings combine to further reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.
Three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements control chromatic aberrations while enhancing color, sharpness and contrast, even at the widest aperture settings.
This lens features a magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade, dust- and moisture-resistant construction.
New A/M focus mode provides fast, secure switching between auto and manual focus operation.

Nikon 600mm f/4.0 reviews

AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 53.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Special Purpose I use this lens for wildlife and landscape. I am thrilled with the results already,(and I am still on a learning curve). I live in the NE and it has been too cold for me to spend the time need with this lens. I read all the reviews too and said how heavy can it be? it's pretty heavy. I think hand held birds in flight would be a real challenge. The cost is ( well you know) but if you can swing it, it is a well made piece of art. Remember if you get a lens this big your gonna need a bigger tripod, and a gimbal if you don't already have one. There goes another couple grand. Life is short, if this is your passion just buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens Used for canoe and kayak racing and yes birds. Took it to St Augustine gator park and it was almost too much lens. However most of the keepers were from this lens. Also took it to the Everglades and took pictures of butterflies hand held. It was the only way to get close to them. The pictures came out sharp and crisp. Then it was off to Marco Island and the owls. Took some video using the D3s. I couldn't believe the results. The video was unbelievable with the 600mm. You need a good tripod and a Whimberly head. Yes it is heavy but I bought a Bob Revolution baby stroller to help carry it down the board walks in the Everglades. This was a retirement gift to myself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best I use this lens for wildlife photography, particularly birds in flight. It replaces my 500mm f4, which fell onto concrete floor and broke. I was at first a little worried about the weight, wondering if I could use it hand held. Well, yes I can. It is just two pounds heavier than the 500 but it is considerably sharper. I have tried it with all three converters, the TC 14, 17, and 20. The sharpness is there and I just tried shooting at 1/1000 second. No problem. I use the lens on my D800e, D7100, and the D4s. I look forward to great new shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I am a wildlife photographer ( and a Nikon fan. Last month I added (after a deep and deep thought as it cost you really) Nikon 600mm F/4 lens to my armoury and was on shooting sessions of birds and leopards. No two words, this is fantastic! Sharp and quick focusing. I feel it's a must for a wildlife photographer. But it is heavy, I really feel it! So little worried; how should I carry when I travel overseas? Also very careful in handling (it is very expensive and almost the price of my jeep I used for wildlife). Nevertheless I am fully satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, but magnifies atmospherics too! I am a wildlife biologist and use this lens as both a spotting scope and for wildlife photography. I live in the southwest, and find doing sharp long-shots with this lens very difficult at times due to heat waves - don't try taking pics of desert bighorn in August with it... Thus, trying to get closer to avoid distortion puts me within range for using my 300 f2.8, and the heat waves go away (at least a lot more). It is an awesome lens to use on days with cold, clear air - especially on wintering bald eagles or other sensitive species like that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish I'd bought this lens sooner! After what seemed like a very long year of contemplation, careful consideration, technical research, soul searching and intense meditation with a wise man in the Himalayas,I decided to buy this lens. Actually none of that is true, I was just saving up. It is a very expensive lens and now that I have it I feel it is well worth the price. I am an amateur wildlife photographer(proficient hobbiest) and being able to reach out there to get that great shot adds yet another level of Wow to an already exciting hobby.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 600mmf4 Edge-to-Edge sharp As a professional photographer I have used Nikon lenses for the last 21years. Nikon optical glass is the best in the World. The 500mmf4 & 600f4 are both crucial to my magazine sports photography: edge-to-edge sharpness and ease of use (fast / accurate focus, light weight and exceptional build quality are second to none.I would not be without my trusted Super-telephoto Nikon's. My Tropical Grey Nikon 600mmf4 I purchased from B&H, .... Highly recommend using the TC14E-2 when you need slightly more reach on difficult assignments,/ from f4- f5.6 but images are as sharp as they are from the prime lens. The Nikon 500/600 f4's are the best super-telephotos available. If your thinking of buying a Sigma or other make, choose a good second-hand Nikon everytime - its the optical glass that is all important, not the price !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS Every review you read will basically say the same thing. Some concise, some with more details in description, some more eloquently written. But when you chisel away and get to the details they will all say the same thing * Its big-really big * Its Heavy- one of the heaviest * Its Expensive- Used car price expensive AND: * It is an incredible lens that produces * razor sharp pictures * rich color reproduction * Wonderful contrast. * No remorse after owning and using this lens. Just praise * Repeatedly said: I wish I never waited so long to buy this lens SO Remember- No more regrets. There are always solutions to problems you encounter. Life is way to short and those photos keep slipping away every year you wait. PS I use the Wimberley head and when the lens is on the tripod it is like moving a feather around. It is like a beautiful dance betwen the lens and the tripod- effortless.
