Amazed!!!!

You would think that a chunk of translucent plastic would be useless as an on-camera flash modifier. I believe this apparatus works as a light distributor in 360 degrees. I tested this product with both a Vivitar 283 and a Vivitar 285HV on a EOS 5D Mark III. It seemed to work best when I set the camera setting to Av mode at a set aperture rather than in M mode and let the flash do the work. Of course, using a slower shutter speed allowed the available light to "invade" the image and allow more "depth of field" with the allowance of light. In the Av mode, the shutter speed was slower, the IS of the lens allowed for a focused image, and that allowed for the exposure to be "perfect" if there is such thing. I cut my teeth on film and digital follows in the tradition of Adam's Zone System and everything works on digital as it did, does in analog. I was completely blown away to this fact. Enjoy your new toy. This is a PJ's staple for "controlled" flash light!

WORKS LIKE A CHARM

Had to give it four instead of five stars because it didn't fit snug and I had to use velcro to achieve fitment. Otherwise, great product. Produces very even light without shadows. recommended.

I found it very practicable to attach to my Vitar 283 flash head. I love it!

Nice enhancement to almost any flash

I received this diffuser as a gift to use with my Vivitar 285HV. I am thoroughly pleased with the way it softens shadows and distributes light more evenly across the frame. Yes, it reduces the range of the flash, but with even an f4 lens, my 285HV still provides plenty of light for most indoor applications. Metering is still fully automatic with the diffuser on the flash, so no additional compensation is required. I wish I had tried this years ago. It makes flash photography much more satisfying.

Simple and capable

Simple device that turns most directional flashes into more of a bare-bulb-like strobe. The light is not as soft as a real bare-bulb flash and the catchlights are rectangular instead of round. There are a lot of other devices out there that cost a lot more. From my experience most don't perform significantly better to justify the price.

I haven't played with this much, but I like the effect. I hope to use it more soon.

Basic Yet Effective

I've been using Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce Diffusers since they were first introduced many years ago. They soften the harshness of direct flash used either directly or at the recommended angle. Just keep in mind that they rob you of about two f stops of power, and that with non-TTL flashes such as the Vivitar 285, you can't use them in the auto exposure mode with the flash head pointed forward.

I have used Omni bounce for years. It provides soft even light through the scene. Great for general shooting.

question

does this fit the vivitar 283/285?
Asked by: John W.
Yes it fits my 285 (don't know about 283). But it doesn't fit around the flash as these usually do. Instead it clips inside the black frame around the flash diffusing lens.

question

Does the Sto-Fen #OM-B Omni-Bounce fit on the Bower SFD728 Auto Focus TTL Flash?
Asked by: Mike R.
It does fit, but it is fairly loose, and can easily be bumped off.
