ExpoImaging EXPOA02NT overview

  • 1Description

Depth-of-field (DOF) is more than a button on the front of a camera; it is a complex mathematical system that interweaves focal length, focusing distance, and aperture. Many modern SLR/DSLR lenses no longer have complete or accurate DOF markings. So to aid photographers, this ExpoImaging ExpoAperture² Depth-of-Field Guide gives shooters a full scale that can effectively be read with a single glance.

To use the guide, one needs to select the sensor/film size—anywhere from a 2x digital crop factor to 6x6 cm film—then a focal length ranging from 15mm to 135mm. The scale will compensate for the varying film/sensor sizes in relation to the selected aperture. When the parameters are chosen, the guide returns a range of apertures and the corresponding areas that will be rendered in focus for each f-stop.

The ExpoAperture² is compact, and easily finds its home in just about any camera bag or pocket. This ExpoAperture² includes a printed quick-start guide, a storage pouch and a sensor/film format reference chart.

This version of the ExpoAperture² is a two disc kit that includes a standard guide for 15-135mm lenses, and a second disc for telephoto focal lengths from 70-600mm.

    ExpoAperture2 Depth-of-Field Guide (2-Disc Kit) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting, Useful Tool This product performs four useful functions regarding depth of field and selective focusing: 1. Determines appropriate aperture and distance for desired DOF. 2. Gives appropriate DOF for given aperture and distance. 3. Gives accurate hyperfocal distance for all f/stops on any given lenes and focal factor (film or digital). 4. Gives DOF for closeup photography. Great because it is easy to use once one gets the hang of it and a great learning tool, as it does as advertised in a general sense. Needs improvement regarding it's precision in measurement indications on the dial.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice tool .. well worth the money. this is a great tool for learning and also for having a quick DOF reference. I like the size of the disk as they are small enough to put into my camera bag. I recommend the two disk set as it covers a broader range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple to use depth of field guide I bought these to help me learn about depth of field, and have found this product easy to use. You have to measure the distance semi accurately which is the only downfall. But if you take the time to be half accurate, or over estimate the distance these will work for you. Much easier to understand than trying to decipher a depth of field table.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cost-effectiveness now very questionable Perhaps as an educational tool for being passed around a class or similar this is worth the high price - the physical presentation etc is decent enough. However, with smartphone ubiquity, I'd have to think 99% of people would be equally or better served with a free DOF calculator app, and if needing education, spending 5 minutes on dofmaster - including it's downloadable tables for most every lens you can even print/laminate for a fraction of the outlay of this. The physical limitations of the card mean you don't get the more exacting reference numbers easily available on the free smartphone apps, this product strikes me more as a 'days of yesteryear' relic with good intentions more than good value or good sense.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Instructional CD-ROM no longer included I received the product today and discovered that there was no instructional CD-ROM included, even though the quickstart guide refers to the included cd. I called the company and was informed that they no longer include the disc. Instead the information can be found at their website.
