- Rack Mountable
The Furman M-8x2 Merit Series 8 Outlet Power Conditioner is a low-cost AC power solution for rack mount systems. Install an M-8x in the top slot of your rack, and the eight switched AC outlets in the rear panel will power up and protect all your equipment, up to a 15A load.
More DetailsM-Series conditioners protect your delicate electronic equipment by combining high voltage varistor (MOV) surge and transient suppressors. The fast-acting suppression circuit quickly responds, and clamps transient voltages to safe levels. An RFI/EMI interference filter works to prevent noise from fluorescent lights, certain dimmers, radio transmitters, and similar sources of "electronic pollution" from contaminating the AC line, and from there leaking into sensitive audio, video, or computer circuits.

Would this be good to use to protect a Drawmer MX60 unit and similar AV gear? Else anything else you can recommend?
Yes, the Furman M-8x2 Merit Series 8 Outlet Power Conditioner & Surge Protector is a good option to use to provide clean power and protection against power surges for the Drawmer MX60 Preamp and other A/V gear. If you need rack lights, you can get the Furman M-8Lx Merit X Series 8 Outlet Power Conditioner & Surge Protector - with Dual Rack Lights (B&H # FUM8LX), which is the same item with a pair of pull-out lights that have a dimmer control. The Radial Engineering Power-1 Surge Suppressor and Power Conditioner (B&H # RAPOWER1) is similar to the M-8x2 and the Furman P-1800 PF R Power Conditioner/Surge Suppressor B&H # FUP1800PFR) is specifically for use with instrument amplifiers and other high-current equipment such as amplifiers and powered monitors.

Why is it recommended to put this at the top of a rack? I'd like to keep my Blackmagic monitor on top for visibility, and have this at the bottom, under an ATEM and Hyperdeck.
Many other power conditioners have lights in them that point down so you can see in low light areas. For this one though, it doesn't matter where you place it.

question
Is this classified as a good surge protector? The rating of 170 joules seem to be on a low side of recommended range between 200 to 400 joules. Any thoughts?
Furman makes a quality product. This would be considered an entry level product for non-critical applications.

question
Will the Furman M-8x2 Merit Series help clean up 6KW portable generator power?
As long as the generator you are using can produce sine wave output. They manufacture many suitable ones but some only produce square wave output and powering lights in an emergency or tools on a construction site is about all they are good for. I think there may be adapters available to regulate the output from the square wave type to be suitable. You'll just have to check on that...
