The angle of the head is easily adjusted with its tilting 5/8" light stand mount and convenient positioning handle. An Impact air-cushioned light stand is included, as well as the fluorescent bulbs.

Separate power switches mounted on the rear allow "dimming" of this fixture.
The 18.5" reflector provides wide, even coverage, and an included internal diffusion panel can be used to further soften the light.

PAINTERS, LISTEN UP!

I dabble in photography as a means to capture reference material for studio painting, as well as Plein-Air painting, so this review is for painters who are still shopping for their studio lighting at art-n-crafts stores or hardware stores. I'm a fine artist, oil painter and up until recently, I struggled with daylight lamps that were too bright. What I needed in my art studio was a LUX of 1500-2000 or 5000-5500 Degree-Kelvin (cool blue daylight). Just because the package has the word daylight printed on it, you must read the fine print. When I finally buckled down and started to research studio lighting, I came across B&H Photo Video Audio. The wonderful customer service team answered all my questions. Even though there may come a time when fluorescent lighting is replaced with the less expensive LED bulb, for now, I prefer the coolness of fluorescent lights to LEDs. Fluorescent light is wonderful for painters. I purchased (2) Impact VA903 5-Lamp Fluorescent Cool Lights (120 VAC), lights heads only. For the base, I purchased (1) Impact Folding Wheeled Base Stand 8.5 and (1) Impact Folding Wheeled Base Stand 11.5 The differing heights allow me to broadcast a wider light, or I can keep them at about 7.5' (as shown) and focus on my painting area. The metal stands are very study, telescoping, and a perfect fit for the Impact light heads. The wheels are made of a sturdy rubber and the 28 stand-base folds for easy storage. For my studio, mobility is important and it's probably important for your studio as well due to the ever-evolving needs of painters. Each light head is approximately 12(h) x19.25(w). The removable plastic diffusers create a gentle cascading light with no harsh lines or shadows. My studio truly feels, looks, and performs as if it were daylight. And while LED lights are dimmable, these fluorescent Impact Lights offer the ability to use only 2 bulbs or all 5 bulbs with switches on the back. The only problem I faced with the Impact Lights was the ability to use the switches on the back of each head. This means I needed to retract the poles, switch on the number of bulbs necessary and reposition the heads at the right upward distance for each painting session. Again, since I use all 10 bulbs, I plugged both lights into a multi-plug surge protector with a floor switch and USB ports. I reach back with my maul stick and switch on the lights. Perfect! I don't feel the need to add any added weight to the rolling stands because I'm the only person who uses this studio. The stands are positioned where they won't be bumped. If your stands are placed in the open room, I would weight them for added support and peace-of-mind. The only thing left is knowing when and if you've hit that perfect lighting sweet-spot. Using a gray-scale finder means all values should be crisp and easily differentiated. If whites, grays, and black blur together, the room is too dark. If the area is too bright, everything looks gray to include your black and white. I use a light meter that provides an accurate reading in Kelvins which is also available at B&H. And now I can get back to portraiture work. Thank you B&H for all your help. Marie

Works good for me

I use it for interview video and product photography, I have a diffuser sock over it but found using an umbrella diffuser in addition really works great. I think the best thing is low heat, my studio is small and can not handle over hot lighting.

Nice Bright Light for a Small Studio

Not being a photographer, I bought this kit so I could paint watercolors after dark. The 5000K lights are a good compromise between the too-warm 2700K lights and the too north-light-cold 7000K. The fixture uses 5 lamps that can be switched anywhere from 1 to 5 lamps so you can vary the intensity of light from dim to a real flood of light, a very nice feature. Overall fixture quality is good and represents good value. On the downside, the stand that comes in this kit is a bit marginal for a fixture this heavy. I've braced mine securely against my painting table, but if I were a photographer in a big studio with lots of activity I think I'd want a sturdier stand.

Good Value for the Money

I am using this light to shoot video. The light fixture appears to be well made with the exception of the handle that tightens the head from tilting. The handle contacts the body of the fixture before the head is very tight. So far the light is staying in place, but it is easy to move even with the handle fully tightened. The supplied bulbs do not seem to be very bright. I have to crank the ISO up to get proper exposure even at full brightness. The bulbs are not very color accurate. I have had best results setting a custom white balance. If I had to do it again, I would have bought a bare head and purchased some quality bulbs. The cost would have been higher, but it would have been worth the difference.

Versatile, but not a great design

I have two of these and have used them to light a scene as well as an interview. The advantages of this lamp are mainly in its ability to change how many, and which of the 5 bulbs you're using. That's a really nice feature for me. The quality of light comes down to which bulbs you use. Where this lamp falls short is the physical design. This is not at all a compact lamp. It's bulky and heavy (12.5 lb). To remove the reflector dish you have to remove the outer four bulbs. These features do not make it ideal for travel. These are somewhat of a big deal for me, which is why I gave it a 3 star rating.

Fantastic value

I use this light for stills and video shooting. So far it's proven to be great. No color shift and great color balance. In quick situations I love being able to see the light that it produces. Does not run hot and will not heat up the shooting space or studio. It's not the most powerful light but that's not what I needed it for. In video situations it's fantastic especially wide-open shooting. The only bummer I can see with it is that it takes a little while set up and tear down. But not the worst thing in the world, and for how it performs you can't beat the price. I would recommend it.

Very bright light. Inexpensive. Reasonably good quality. Excellent for a cheap, bright light source.

question

Can this light accept CFL bulbs?
Asked by: Mark B.
Yes, it should accept standard CFL bulbs. The bulbs that ship with the unit extend forward more than standard CFL bulbs do and they are provide color control.

question

Are there any replacement parts to this unit that an be purchased separately?
Asked by: Rafael T.
The spiral fluorescent lamps and the optional Impact 18 Diffuser Sock (B&H # IMDSBD18) are available as separate accessory items that may be purchased for use with the Impact VA903 5-Lamp Fluorescent Cool Light. However, I do not see the 18.5 Reflector or the Internal Diffusion Panel included with the light fixture listed as optional purchasable accessories, and I see no other user-serviceable parts for this item. If you need other replacement items, I would have to recommend contacting Impact Studio Lighting directly for assistance with your replacement part needs. You may contact Impact Studio Lighting by calling (212) 594-2120 or by e-mailing them at [email protected].

question

The load capacity on the stand states 7.5 lbs, but the lamp is listed as 12.5 lbs. Is the stand really capable of holding this light?
Asked by: Denise W.
Oh without a doubt, these lights have been so helpful to us that we have bought multiple sets. Obviously, the top heaviness of the lamp head will tip if you don't have the stand legs spread apart enough but we haven't had any issues with our setup!! Definitely recommend this lighting set especially for the price!

question

Is there a soft box that would fit on this light?
Asked by: Sarah f.
I have use the diffusion cap as well. It can give you the same effect as a diffused beauty dish. Since I bought this light I've used it for people and product, video and stills. I would highly recommend it. If there were any downside at all it would be the portability. But for the price I can live with that.
