Canon 200mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

An exceptionally fast medium telephoto prime, the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM is a Canon L-series lens that is ideal for portraiture as well as indoor sports shooting or other low-light, fast-motion applications. The large f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting and also afford extensive control over depth of field for isolating subject matter using selective focus. Equally impressive, the optical design incorporates ultra-low dispersion glass and fluorite elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity. Additionally, Super Spectra coatings have been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for high contrast and color neutrality when working in harsh lighting.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, this 200mm f/2 also features a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism also afford quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. Additionally, a removable rotating tripod collar is included for stable use of the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Medium-length telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 320mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords significant control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
Ultra-low dispersion and fluorite elements are used to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce high clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that it optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
A Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon 200mm f/2.0 reviews

EF 200mm f/2L IS USM Lens is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 73.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything you've heard about this lens is true! I've been dreaming of this lens for years. Now that I've had some time to really use it - I am confident in saying that this is the best portrait lens, period. That's right... I'm looking at you 85 1.2!! If you're reading this review, you probably already know about the stunning depth of field, razor sharp focus and speed. You probably also know it's heavy as hell, expensive and stands out like a sore thumb. The most important thing I can convey is that this lens delivers the most stunning, dreamy, backgrounds and takes portraits second to none. If you ever have the opportunity to make this purchase as a portrait photographer..... DOOOOOO IT!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from yes its pricey, but worth every penny This is one of those lenses people research for months and go back and forth on. The price scares folks, the weight .Really those are the only things I could imagine anyone could find to complain about with the lens, First off the price is totally reasonable to me, I cant imagine the millions and millions of dollars spent to develop this lens, Now im not saying you wont be shocked when you open the credit card bill, but come on, you cant fake what this lens does. And really the weight is not a factor at all if you ask me. bottom line the thing is as close to perfect as I;ve seen

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular lens: fast, sharp Just came out of the box last week, and so far I've only used it at a youth sports league to test its speed, AF accuracy, sharpness, and the legendary bokeh. It exceeded all my expectations. Despite the weight (easily mitigated by using a monopod), it is easy to maneuver quickly. At wide open 2.0 aperture, it's insane! From across the soccer field, the plane of focus even at 100 ISO was razor sharp. You'll see in the sample photo below that I was just a fraction off the correct focus even at that distance because it is so precise. I've not tested the IS yet because of the super fast shutter speed in full light, but expect to do so at an evening wedding in New Orleans next month. Worth every penny, and I'd recommend it without hesitation!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite Lens I own a dozen L lenses and this one is my favorite because of its amazing versitility. I use it for portrait and nature work as well as both indoor and outdoor sports photography. Sure, it is heavier than a typical hand-held lense like the 70-200mm L IS USM, but I find that I actually use this lens for walking about anyway because of its ultra-sharpness and amazing fast speeds. I also own the 300 2.8 L, but because of the weight differential, that lens often gets left behind now that I have this one. Paired with my 1D Mark IV, this thing is ridiculous.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing lens Aquired this lens earlier this week WOW.! The auto focus speed is simply amazing, with both the 5D MKII and the new 7D. The optics are the best to date of anything that I've used - I believe it's better than the current Canon 300 F/2.8 and the 500 F/4. The weight isnt bad, hand-holdable for me, and the 'little white whale' works well with both the 1.4 and the 2.0 extenders. Would highly recommend this for sports, as a second lens - in addtion to carrying a 400 or a 500. I gave this a go an engagement (wedding) shoot. A little large, but for interior shots, in low light, this really worked well. It utilzes the same drop in filters as the other telephotos, and I believe it may take the place of my 300, for a number of projects. My hats off to the folks at Canon.......again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just buy it and you will love it! Sharp, sharp, sharp! This lens is everything you have read about and more. My hit rate went up considerably compared to my 70-200 2.8 IS. F/2 at this focal length has to be seen to be believed. It gathers so much light that low light shooting is much easier. Focus is fast and silent on my 1DM4 and 1DM3 bodies although my 70-200 did focus a bit faster which surprised me. Tracking improved quite a bit over the 70-200 producing 9 out of 10 sharp images. I use this for sports and portraits mostly. The down sides are the weight which is to be expected and the lack of a lens cap. I bought the AquaTech softCap made for the 300 f/2.8 since they fit the 200 f/2 which works perfectly. Also the $$$ lens hood is a bit tricky to get on and off but you get used to it. Overall this is a near perfect lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addictive Sharpness I've used this lens to shoot ice hockey at all levels including prep, college, USA Hockey, OHL, and NHL for many years. Despite its weight, the results are simply addicting. Prior to purchasing this bad boy, I was shooting hockey with the 70-200mm f2.8 and thought I was getting good results. Boy, was I in for a surprise! After renting the 200mm f2.0, I was immediately stunned to see just how sharp and bright my images could be. Problem was that I (and my customers, editors, etc.) became addicted to this sharpness and eventually compelled me to buy it. Now, along with my 1DX, I've shot this lens from hundreds of penalty boxes and stadium perches and, if I'm limited for space (so I cannot bring my 300mm f2.8 II), from concourse level with a 1.4X extender. I highly recommend this lens and cannot imagine shooting hockey without it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute top class Since you consider buying this lens, you probably have done some research already. Just to confirm what you already know: Optical/electronic/mechanical quality: Absolute top class. No question about it. Portraits: You are not anonymous using this lens, and it could easily frighten shy people ;) Its minimum focus distance is 6.23' (1.9 m). So, get the Canon extension tube EF 12 II. To make it complete, also buy: Canon 52mm Drop-in circular polarizing filter and Canon ERC-E4M Medium rain cover. The Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS is a beauty of a lens. Enjoy!
