Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Overview

At the long end of Canon's L-series lens lineup, the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM is a super telephoto prime distinguished by its impressive reach and advanced optical design. Utilizing two fluorite elements, one Super UD element, and one ultra-low dispersion element, chromatic aberrations and color fringing is virtually eliminated and imagery exhibits notable clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting in order to achieve greater contrast when working in backlit and harsh lighting conditions.

Beyond the optical attributes, the 800mm f/5.6 is also characterized by its advanced four stop-effective Image Stabilizer system, which has separate stabilization modes to suit various shooting applications. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed for use in trying environmental conditions and it has a rotating tripod collar to benefit working atop a tripod or monopod.

Super telephoto prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 1280mm equivalent focal length.
Relatively bright f/5.6 maximum aperture affords control over depth of field for isolating subjects and producing selective focus imagery.
Two fluorite elements, along with one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element and one ultra-low dispersion element, are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that it optimized for panning.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
A Focus Preset function is available to quickly recall a programmed focusing position.
Focus Limiter switch lets you constrain the focusing to three different ranges to suit different applications: 19.7-65.6', 19.7'-infinity, or 65.6'-infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Fixed rotating tripod collar benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Reviews

Just a wonderful lens

There aren't too many reviews for this (and not any recently) -- I guess there just aren't that many around. Anyhow, my wife gave this to me as a present last year. I really didn't think I had a need for it, but it sure is cool. Yes, you definitely need to use it with a tripod, and the narrow angle of view requires that you have your A-game for zeroing in your subject. But the results are indeed amazing. I don't get to use it often, but when I do, I'm SO glad I have it!

Incredible lens, but too expensive

This is an amazing lens, but big and heavy ( and expensive) which is to to be expected for full frame gear. Being older, I can't carry bazooka lenses anymore. I'm selling it and switching to Olympus and getting the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm lens. Time to get the same high quality in a smaller package.

Too heavy to hand-hold, but yields incredible images

This is an amazing lens on all levels. Incredible sharpness, great color, etc. It's way too heavy for me to hand-hold, but on a tripod or even a mono-pod it's no problem. Only been using it a couple of months, but I do love it. Great results with the 1.4x III too.

How to make 2x extender autofocus with the 800mm lens

The 800mm lens will not autofocus with the 2x Canon MkIII extender. The workaround that I discovered is to autofocus with a 1.4x extender, switch to manual focus, remove the camera, then swap out the 2x extender instead of the 1.4x extender and re-attach the camera. Has given me spectacular results essentially shooting at 1600mm.

Very Light and I captured the photo I really dream of.

With the use of my lenshide and this Super Telephoto lens I did capture photos of wildlife that is so crisp and stunning. I pair this one with my canon 1DX because I observed that my 1DX give me more freedom with the light in low light situation. However, I sometimes I used also my 5DS. My husband bought this as a gift for me on August 27, 2017. I did not write a review immediately because I want to test it for a while and not so good to give feedback when you don't have enought experience of using it and evaluating the results. I am 5 ft tall but I still managed to carry it in a quite a distancde. I am definitely loving it anf recommend it to friends. The photos I included in my review are almost as good as RAW. I did not crop the fox kit and I just took it May 2018, but the Prairie Dog I captured it 2017 and I cropped it just at the face side.

In this case, you DO get what you pay for.

My wife got this for me last year as a gift. I never would have purchased this for myself (way overkill for my normal needs). But it would have been rude of me to return it, right? I have nothing else to compare this too, but what I can say is that this lens is absolutely amazing. Don't even think of using it hand-held (maybe with the R5 -- haven't tried that yet), but if you can manage to keep it steady, the results are spectacular. No complaints whatsoever.
