Tiffen 58R29 overview

  • 1Description

The 58mm #29 Dark Red Filter from Tiffen is a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and separation between tones. In landscape photography, clear skies are darkened and when combined with a polarizer, a very extreme contrast is added to the image. Many forensic photographers use the #29 Red filter as it absorbs blues colors and enhances red. Therefore, the filter aids in finding evidence. Infrared images are also enhanced giving a stronger effect and look by making foliage look white. The red filter is ideal for copying blue prints, since it enhances the lines and is easier to view the image. It has a filter factor of 16.5, so you must increase your exposure by 4 1/3 of a stop to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

    Tiffen 58R29 reviews

#29 Dark Red Filter (58mm) is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice filter for Infrared Photography This is a deep red filter that is great for infrared photography. The Hoya 25A, which is lighter red, allows more red light to reach the sensor; this results in more color but if you find the red too much, a 29 filter might be more suitable. I am not saying Wratten #29 is better than the Hoya 25A, it is a matter of personal choice. Since Hoya doesn't make a #29, and B+W 091 is not necessarily an equivalent, the Tiffen #29 seems to be the only choice. The filter came to me with a few scratches so I took out one star. The anti-reflective coating is not good, so I took out another star. Pictures are not as sharp as those I took using the Hoya 25A so I took out another star.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better that #25 I have used this filter on a variety of B/W films, to include HIE and 2475. Any Ilford product is a perfect match, as well.
