    Soundcraft GB2R-12.2 reviews

    GB2R-12.2 - 12-Channel Rack-Mountable Audio Mixer is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fantastic mixer I work in live video recording for conferences and such. At work we use the venrable Mackie Onyx 1640 (a 16-Mono, 6 Aux, 4 Bus+Sterio Mixer). I really needed something with similar capabilities but with the 1640i going for $dollars I started looking around for alternatives. That's when I found the SoundCraft GB2R 12.2. It has 12 Mono Channels, 2 Sterio Channels, for a total of 16 XLR inputs. The levels on it are all +4 instead of mixture of +4 and -6 on the Mackie (A great annoyance for me). It has 6 aux sends, 4 of which are XLR! I can live with only 2 buses.Quality comparison: Soundcraft Preamps sound as good as Onyx to me. EQ on the Onyx board sounds a little bit more transparent. The faders on the Soundcraft are much better than on the mackie. Soundcraft has a phase toggle, seperate direct outs and inserts (which is great because I use inserts a lot for AGC & Compression), none of which the mackie have! The fact is, there aren't a lot of rackmount mixers in this category. I've never used the A&H Mixwizard 16.2, but it comes off as a bit too DJ'ish (built in FX? use a 1RU unit!). The Mackie 1640i is too expensive and it's built in recording interface is cheap (max 16 record channels when mains and buses might need recorded also. Seriously, patch your directs into a couple of audiofire echos for close to the same price, more channels, and better quality). If you need a really good analog mixer that will provide enough inputs for sound reinforcement and mixing (12 mics will cover a pretty big room, and 2 sterio inputs are enough for a couple computers/vtc suites), without a bunch of cheap or poorly implemented digital stuff, I'd recommend the GB2R 12.2. It's a 16 channel by the way mackie rates mixers (12 Mono/2 sterio), with 2 buses (recording/sound reinforcement, sometimes I set up for DJ's and use buses for tops/subs).Have been hauling it around for a couple years. Still loving it and feeling that I got a good deal. The Onyx 1640i is nice, but to compete they need to add direct outs, some nicer faders, and sell one without the firewire interface for under a thousand.
