Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 overview

  • 1Description

Start photographing distant subjects with ease by using this 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G SSM Lens from Sony. Optimized for full-frame A-mount cameras, this zoom lens will provide an excellent telephoto range for working with many different subject types. The lens also uses a variable f/4.5-5.6 aperture to keep size to a minimum. Along with this, the optical design incorporates an extra-low dispersion element to combat aberrations and increase contrast throughout the entire zoom range.

For working with fast-moving subjects, the 70-300mm is equipped with a fast and silent Super Sonic wave Motor for autofocus. This is assisted through a rear focusing design and by the inclusion of a focus hold button and electronic focus range limiter on the lens barrels. Users can even focus as close as 3.9' for reaching a 0.25x magnification. Additionally, it has a nine-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

A telephoto zoom designed for full-frame A-mount cameras, the 70-300mm can also be used on APS-C camera systems where it will provide a 105-450mm equivalent focal length.
A variable f/4.5-5.6 maximum aperture helps ensure the overall size and weight of the lens is kept to a minimum while still providing good light-gathering potential and the ability to capture images with shallow depth of field.
One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
An SSM autofocus system and rear focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control. The lens also features a minimum focus distance of 3.9' for achieving a 0.25x magnification.
An electronic focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 reviews

    70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G SSM Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I really enjoy this lens. While heavier than its 100-300 counterpart it is definetly quite a step up. I used it at spring training games this season and got great shots. My tests show better color rendition than my 100-300. This will definetly help with my wildlife photos this summer. Fast and quiet autofocus are much improved over the 100-300, and I really like the focus limiter feature. The lens hood makes this a fairly conspicuous lens but I can live with that for the performance. I considered a 70-200 f4, but am glad I chose this for the extra reach. It pairs perfectly with the zeiss 16-80 as they use the same filters. Both are equally sharp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wonderful for birding with my NEX-5n I bought this lens a week ago, together with Sony's LA-EA2, and found it surprisingly well balanced with the small NEX. Focusing was very quick and I was delighted to see that my images were sharper than what I was able to achieve with my Canon 1D Mark IV and 70-300mm L zoom -- although with so many variables in play between the two combinations I can't say the Sony is sharper than the Canon. Fit and finish of this G series lens is excellent. I really appreciated the lighter weight of the lens and NEX body, even with the adapter thrown in for good measure. I'm looking forward to getting an NEX-7 when it finally becomes available and putting this lens to work with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony 70300G is a great telephoto zoom ! This is my favorite telephoto zoom of all time. I use it on an A65. I really have NO complaints about this lens. It is sharp and has excellent contrast. AF is dead fast and reliable. Easy to manual focus as well. Very nice bokeh. This brings me to the reason I switched to this lens from the Sony 70400G. Although the 70400G is an excellent performer, I found this bohek often times to be harsh. So the better bokeh and smaller size/weight of the 70300G brings this lens over and above the extra 100mm of focal length of the 70400G for my use. Both are super, just my preference. But let me tell you, this 70300G is a sweet lens ! I use it mostly for birding on a tripod, but it will also work well for portraits on the short end. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value, great lens A 70-300mm lens suggests possible uses as a sports lens and maybe a short telephoto, but this lens has special characteristics that fit it well for other specialized functions. It has a close focus of 1.2 meters, which makes it great for flowers and butterflies which are really edgy about anything getting too close to them. It is plenty fast enough for action, especially with the limiter engaged and the build top notch as befits a G lens. It's a great lens to carry around on a belt pack as a companion to my 16-80 Zeiss. Also super sharp!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An outstanding Zoom Lens This lens came highly recommended and received very positive reviews from other users. I use this lens for indoor sports photography and as my long lens for my landscape work. Indoors it has proven to be fast focusing and I have had no lock on problems. For my landscape work it has allowed me to focus on detail shots and closeups. It has excellent sharpness and color clarity. It does extend quite far and has an outrageously large hood but these are minor compared to the quality of the images. I highly recommend this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens I love nature photography and this lens is a wonderful addition to my kit. The SSM technology is really great. I have the Sony a77ii with APS-C sensor, so I have a little longer reach when I am fully zoomed in to my subject. It's fantastic in good lighting conditions, but you do suffer from graininess when the light is not so good. After all, it is 4.5/5.6 aperture, but other than that it is a great lens for the price. It's light too. I would definitely recommend this lens. It's a keeper.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens for the Money I absolutely love the lens. It is exactly what I expected. Sony always produces high quality gear. f/4.5 operates poorly in low light, but does great when you boost the iso. Works amazing in reasonably lit settings, even sharper with a tripod. If I could have forked over another grand I would have gone for the f/2.8, but that would also be odd for me walking through streets w/ a lens that size. This lens is a perfect fit for the kit I needed. I wanted to see what it would be like operating at a 300mm focal length. I can't wait to see what Sony comes up with next! The focus lock is perfect and I don't want to buy a lens with out it. Handy having it right on the barrel, lock it recompose and shoot. Perfect. ENJOY!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Glass It is an excellent lens, perhaps the best in the 70-300 breed compared with others of their price and quality. The construction is excellent. Light and excellent combination of plastic and metal. is extremely sharp throughout its zoom range. super-quiet and fast AF.
