Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 Overview

  • 1Description

The 24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Alpha A-Mount Standard Zoom Lens from Sony is a bright zoom lens, specifically designed by Carl Zeiss for the Sony Alpha-series of DSLR cameras. Unique to this lens is the Carl Zeiss T* (T-star) coating that helps reduce lens flare, while increasing contrast. When used with cropped APS-C sized DSLR cameras, the equivalent focal length for this lens is 36-105mm. It is a compact all-in-one lens, and is ideal for snapshots, portraits, interiors or outdoor scenery.

This lens is constructed of 16 elements in 13 groups, as well as 3x Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, which all help to deliver sharp, clear photos throughout the zoom range. It has a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a front-end filter diameter of 77mm.

The lens' maximum aperture is a fast f/2.8 and can be maintained throughout the zoom range. Its minimum aperture is f/22. It also has 9 circular aperture blades that work to produce smooth, out of focus background effects.

24-70mm Focal Length
This lens has a 2.9x zoom factor, and its 24-70mm focal length range is equivalent to 36-105mm in APS-C format.
Aperture Range: f/2.8-22
The maximum aperture is f/2.8 and can be maintained throughout the zoom range. Minimum aperture is f/22.
Carl Zeiss T* Glass Coating
The glass within this lens has Carl Zeiss' T* (T-star) coating, which is designed to eliminate lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces.
For Sony Alpha & Minolta DSLRs
Designed for APS-C sized sensors, this lens may be used on any Sony Alpha & Minolta camera, depending on your needs and current system.
2x Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) Elements
To reduce chromatic aberrations, most noticeable when zoomed all the way in to the 105mm equivalent focal length, the extra-low dispersion glass corrects for certain wavelengths of light - producing sharper images with truer colors.
2x Aspheric Glass Lens Elements
Both of these precision glass elements correct lens distortion for sharper, more accurate images across the entire zoom range of the lens.
SSM Super Sonic Wave Motor
Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied.
9 Circular Aperture Blades
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded bokeh background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Focus Hold Button
This lens is made with a Focus Mode switch and Focus Hold button, which offer better focus control whenever you need it.

    Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 Reviews

24-70mm f/2.8 Carl Zeiss T* Alpha A-Mount Standard Zoom Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 112.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT LENS Ok, this is a real good lens. I have the A900 with this lens. It is very sharp and fast. It feels like a rock on your hand and I love that. The quality of the glass its the most important thing that you have to considerate when you gonna have an expensive and pro body, so this lens it's the basic thing that you got to have on mind. And if you want to complete the breed i recommend the SAL70200 2.8, the Sigma 12-24 (cheap but incredible sharp and fast wide angle for SONY), and the SAL85F14. But I'm not completly sure if I like the Bokeh yet. Some time looks a little busy for me, but that's not a big deal for me. I love this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent across the board. This is the finest zoom lens I have owned in the 30+ years I have been involved with photography. Extremely well built with all metal construction; focus and zoom rings operate smoothly. The SSM AF is faster than my 70-200 G. I have found no appreciable CA, which I sometimes get with my Zeiss 85/1.4. Very sharp wide open, stop it down past f4 and it's even better. Smooth bokeh. Beautiful colors; this was the first thing I noticed. I've listed the weight as a negative. This is not a lens to hang around your neck on a 20 mile hike. If it bothers you for everyday use, buy some weights and do a little training; this lens is worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens for Sony NEX FS-700 I use it with the Sony NEX-FS700 camera. This is great for light light situations and testimonials. The pictures come out crisp and it was easy to change. I keep the Alpha mount connected to the lens so it's real easy to get on and off. When using auto focus there is a semi loud clicking noise that's pretty annoying. In situations where you might be captuing audio in a realtively quiet place just turn off the auto-focus. If you have the standard lens that comes with the NEX-FS700 I recommend getting a lens like this. Its aperature stays open, even when zoomed in all the way. The glass is better then that lens too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens This lens is so sharp it amazes me every time I look through photos taken with it. The bokeh is very pleasing as well. The lens is very heavy, but is to be expected. You will definitely get a good workout shooting with this all day! Auto-focus is very fast and accurate, as would be expected from a 2.8 lens of this quality. I see people complaining about the mixed use of plastic/metal here and there, but honestly it feels very good. The plastic is very high quality, and it helps keep the weight down from using an all-metal construction. I would recommend this to anyone who can spend the extra money on it, very worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb! SAL2470Z is a great all around lens covering most often used focal lengths. Build quality, color, sharpness, contrast and bokeh are all excellent. I use it on a crop sensor Sony A65v and for me it is still wide enough for landscape photography. If I want wider in the future I would maybe look into a prime lens for that purpose. My only gripe is I wish Sony would create lens profiles for all their lenses for full frame and crop sensors for use in Lightroom and/or Camera Raw rather than having to pick through user created profiles. As of now no one has made a lens profile for this lens for a crop sensor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully sharp and detailed images I shot a wedding in Sansepolcro, Italy with this lens on a Sony A7r camera. Its ability to perform well in low light saved me because I couldn't use a flash during mass. The images were soft but presentable in the dingy light of the catherdral but outside the images were spectacular. They were crisp, with true colors and very little distortion wide open. I used it for close-ups of the ring and jewelry which came out superb. There was several wide shots of the reception that I was able to crop in to a fourth and still have tack sharp clear images. Wow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful lens Great lens, beautifully built. The lens has a metal inner tube, metal filter threads and metal coated in rubber focus and zoom ring. Only plastic is the outer casing containing the Zeiss logo between the focus and zoom ring. Writing and numbering on the lens is engraved instead of painted on the surface like most autofocus lenses. High contrast, neutral colours and fast SSM autofocus. I prefer the way the lens extends to 70mm rather than extending to 24mm like other manufacturers. The lens is heavy but balances well on the A900. It is expensive but you get what you pay for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like a Porsche precise and strong I purchased this lens for its great glass, the very fast focusing, the build quality and the versatility that this lens provides. Yes it is very heavy, but it compares to an equivalent Canon or Nikon product in weight. I have used this particular lens now for about two weeks on a Sony SLT A99V body and conclude that I made an excellent choice, because the clarity even under very low lighting is really amazing. Focus action is silent and very fast. Even macro work is outstanding when compared to a more specialized macro lens. Yes, this CZ 24-70 will be my all around lens. Some reviewers have complained about the lens shade, I found that the shade provided with my lens seems to be made from very strong plastic material and works absolutely fine. Would I buy this lens again, yes absolutely and I would recommend this product to anyone.
