The Manfrotto Alu-Core allows you to use the Expan system with uncored paper or cloth backgrounds. It consists of two aluminum sections which interlock by means of a joining casting. The Expans (available separately) are inserted into the Alu-Core and provide a core for background rolls.
This Alu-Core is 9' (2.7 m) long, when assembled. It replaces old catalog #2922.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Standard Manfrotto quality What's to say? It's a 9 foot hollow aluminum pole for holding paper or backgrounds. Comes in sizes 9 or 12 foot lengths...if you want a 10 footer simply buy 1 set of each and mix and match, it will create two 10.5 poles. Also recommend taking a 2 PVC pipe, remove about 1/3 of the radius and it will snap over this tube securely holding the backdrop/paper in place. First set did come with dent in one of the poles though, due to the horizontal use of this pole I decided to RMA it due to fear of it folding under weight.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from needs a tweek The Alu-Core is needed for cored AND uncored paper when used with Bogen's paper hanging system. If you use cored paper without it, it will sag badly. The problem with this unit is that it does not fit snugly in the cardboard core and there is no really simple way to get the roll paper to attach to the aluminum. It could use some sort of tensioning device. Perhaps Manfrotto means for us to unroll the paper and roll it onto this thing? That seems a pain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definately a must for rolled backdrops I bought this for a vinyl backdrop. The weight of the backdrop was too much for the cardboard core that it came rolled on. I was afraid it might be too much for the core too. However, it was just what was needed. I did have to unroll the backdrop on the driveway to roll it onto the new core. Very easy to assemble and comes with double-sided tape to attach backdrop to the core once the two pieces are assembled.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost solve my issue... I build a tube with PVC pipes to hold a 53 inch long paper roll on a 107 set up but it was too bulky and heavy and didn't get a nice grip. Because of that I bought this item to hold the roll I knew already that it wont be snug on the paper roll but its way lighter than the one I built. If you don't want to unroll all the paper and roll it again on the tube you may need to build something so the paper roll wont be loose on the metal tube. Apart from that i'm happy with it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Repeat Customer I've used these in the past and I will continue to use them. I use a Manfrotto ExpanDrive system and these cores are great for backdrops that don't have a core. In this case, I bought this one for a fabric backdrop. These cores are solid and strong - they are the only ones I use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It just works. I use this core between two Manfrotto rollers for a green screen in my studio. The pieces fit well and it is very durable.
