Manfrotto 025BS Reviews
Classic Studio Lighting Tool
The super boom is the classic tool for positioning a softbox/strobe over a tabletop setup.
Add braked casters
The standand boom works well. To make this good boom great just add the: 110 Braked Caster Set for 3370 & 3071 Stands. I can confirm that they fit and resolve the runaway boom that another reviewer complained of. Factor in another 15% above the superboom price to buy the locking casters.
Great grip
This is great for getting a modifier up around the subject but being able to fine-tune the angle and distance, etc. Only two complaints are 1) I wish it would hold larger modifiers. A giant softbox is hard for it to hold at an angle without slipping, and I have the crank maxed out on tension! 2) the wheels need brakes. I have a couple uneven parts to the floor I shoot on, so it 'settles' about a foot or so away from where I leave it. Brakes seem like they should be standard for a $ stand.
Love it ... Love it!
Portrait and product photo in studio. Used with 25-30 lb load and additional balance weights. Very well made and sturdy. Easy to adjust. Con: large foot print; med. heavy, but large capacity
A great boom
I am using this in my home studio. The boom is 8 ft long so it is a mammoth stand for my studio however it make moving the boom around easily and making adjustments to the orientation of the stobe/modifier is easy and effortless. Getting up on a ladder to change angles is not fun at all. Although this boom comes with a 15 lb counter weight, it should come with another 15 lb counter weight to balance the boom. I will be purchasing another 15 lb weight for the boom. The laws of physics hasn't change: Having a 5 lb strobe/modifier and extending the boom 6 ft means you need 22 Ibs of counterweight. This boom is designed for 15 Ibs which means you need 37 Ibs of counterweight. Due to the aluminun alloy of the gears and spigot, I would only put a max of 10 Ibs for the Strobe/modifiers. Use the second counter weight for fine adjustment along the boom to balance strobe and counterweight. With the weight and the strobe attached extending the stand (height) is difficult as there is alot of weight that you must lift (counterweight plus srobe and boom). It would be very useful to have a crank to raise/lower the stand. My recommendation is that you set the height first and then attach the strobe and counter weights.
Manfrotto nailed it with this one!
A great boom with mobility, versatility and ease of control. The Manfrotto Super Boom and combined 008BU Stand on wheels with bottom-end crank handles controlling the head is a great asset to any studio that permits room for this unit to roam. The counter weight is easy to adjust accommodating for varying flash heads with light modifiers. One could easily justify the usefulness of multiple units in a studio if the room permits.
Boom 5 Stand 3
The boom is amazing. Smooth operating cranks on on heavy 30x60 soft box with heavy PCB Einstein strobe. 5 stars there no doubt. BUT, the stand that comes with this set up could have been more robust and makes the setup way too top heavy. I decided to mount the boom on my Mathews Junior stand. I should bought it that way for around $$.
Great Piece of Equip
Very sturdy, great equipment, although received scratched and wheels are poor quality. However would recommend purchase anyway. But wheels do not lock and fall off easy
