Clean, quiet, consistent mic split for voiceover work

I use this for voiceover and A/B comparison (trying out a processor/preamp). I was looking at other options (JS-2 at a premium price) but I saw this in regular use at a well-known cartoon studio I worked in and decided to give the ART ProSplit a try. I've not detected any colorization of my mic audio and zero noise/hum/distortion added from inserting this box into my signal flow. I've never needed the ground lift or input pad. It's an EXCELLENT value for what I've gotten out of it. I go from my mic into the ART; then into my USB audio interface with one channel set to nominal levels and channel 2 set to -12 lower. When recording at home, I arm and record two separate channels. That way I can record or stream important takes to another studio or my DAW software. If I get too loud I can usually rescue any clipping in my DAW using clean channel 2 audio, sans clipping. This comes in handy with video game and cartoon projects where whispers and screams can range pretty widely in a take. It's already saved my bacon!

This is a great low cost tool to use to record audio straight from the mic for a wedding ceremony or toasts. Just make sure you do do not press -29db.

Simple Box Works Well

I use this splitter to split a mic signal between going to a mixer and going to directly to a monitor when I'm with a band that has limited monitor mixes. It's simple to use, and the metal construction appears rugged. I has a ground lift for the islated output that I've not had to use yet (knock on wood). There's also an input pad, but I don't use this eaither. The only thing I don't like about it is that the jack labels are in dark purlple on a black box, which is nearly impossible to see in a low light situation (i.e. most stages).

Does what it claims

Using this to split a mic level XLR feed to two destinations-- strong, clear signal split with no complaints. Only problem was mounting it in the rack-- the back is very curvy, so it was hard to find a place for foam mounting tape to stick.

question

Does this give you a better sound quality?
Asked by: Joaquin L.
It doesn't IMPROVE audio, but it makes the split sound exactly the same on both channels you want to capture. If you just got a 'y' splitting cable, you'd lose some signal without the transformer. If the mic requires phantom power you could theoretically short out a rig or get hum without a device like this. The alternative would be worse audio.
