Spanning a versatile range of long focal lengths, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM Lens is a telephoto zoom and member of Canon's elite L-series of optics. One fluorite element and one Super UD element are featured, along with four aspherical elements, to produce well-corrected imagery without chromatic or spherical aberrations in order to realize a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. A floating elements system is also used to maintain image quality throughout both the focusing and zoom ranges. Complementing the imaging attributes, this 100-400mm also features an Image Stabilizer to minimize the appearance of camera shake by two stops for sharper handheld shooting. The ring-type USM is employed, too, to deliver quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control. Additionally, a removable rotating tripod collar is included for stable use of the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Telephoto zoom 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 lens is compatible with full-frame EOS DSLRs, as well as APS-C sized sensors where it will provide a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 160-640mm.
One fluorite element and one Super UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) element help to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of clarity and color accuracy.
Four aspherical elements help to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and definition.
Floating elements system maintains consistent image quality throughout the zoom range, at each focal length, and throughout the focusing range, from 5.9' to infinity.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to two shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. In addition to the single-shot standard IS mode, a second mode is also available that it optimized for continuous shooting applications.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with a rear focusing system, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Adjustable zoom ring design allows you to lock the zoom position at any focal length.
Eight diaphragm blades contribute to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Removable rotating tripod collar is included and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.
Compatible with optional EF 1.4X and EF 2X teleconverters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Don't give up Nature photographer. At first seemed to work fine. Began to shoot all out with distance and started to see much ghosting. Sent it back to canon. Everything checked out. Suggested a more quality uv filter. Shot without filter, same problem. Sent back again with camera. Facility was irvine, ca. They suggested sending it to New York corporate. After full review they told me there was an issue with the glass and sent me a brand new lens. Nothing but happy with lens now. Tack sharp is what I expect now and get it enough for me to be totally satisfied. Great bokeh and colors are always rendered to pop. Good experience with warranty facilities.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite lens of all I carry two 5dMkIII camera bodies on my Cotton carrier and this lens is always chest mounted. I love this lens. It's a great portrait lens and at 400 mm will take portraits from across the square. I wish it was faster than f/4.0 but if it was bigger it would be a pain to tote around and hold. It's fast focusing, doesn't hunt much, and gives very sharp images at wide open. Just remember to use 1/400 sec or faster (I use 1/500 or 1/640) to avoid blur. I almost never use tripod. I even got great shots of Musk ox from a rubber zodiak in Greenland. Has two focal distance settings--remember to use the right one to avoid hunting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Results with Lens I have had this lens for 10 days and though had a sore forearm for the first two days - since I prefer to shoot hand-held - I seem to have found a way to hold camera to my advantage - no sore arm. While my hand shakes a little when focusing, due to the heavy weight of this lens - the Image Stabilizer feature ensures sharp results. Since this lens offers such clarity I am able to crop photos and still see detail. I photograph wildlife - mostly birds - and so far am having great success with this lens, over my other 55-250mm lens. I post my nature photos onto 3 separate Nature Groups and get compliments on my shots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for photographing wildlife I loved this lens right out of the box. It is of course heavy and requires some getting used to, but I have been able to get some terrific photos with it--good enough that friends, upon seeing a print, have asked if a pro took that shot or if I did. Definitely a big step up for me. I rented it before buying; my initial reason was to have a good lens for a planned Alaska wildlife trip in June...but I will be using it very frequently around home too. Autofocus is good, fast action shots are clear, bokeh is lovely. Appreciated the free overnight shipping from B&H and the ease of the whole purchase experience. Thank you, B&H.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Welcome to the pros I wasn't sure at first if the price of this lens was worth it until I compared it to my other telephoto zoom. I have a 100-300 Canon that's in the $+ range and have used it for several years. The photos taken were pretty sharp and I was pretty happy with it, until I tried out the 100-400. I shot duplicate photos with both lenses using the Canon 70D. Shot for shot the 100-400 photos were clearer and crisper. I enlarge my pictures to 16 x 20 and panorama up to 16 x 36, and they're displayed in a couple of galleries. Consequently, I need them to be exceedingly sharp. This lens delivers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great L Glass Lens for Birding,Airshows I have this lens on my new Canon EOS 7D,I had it on my 50D previously.I can't imagine not having this lens on my camera in my bag.I like the 2 IS modes.I mainly use it for Bird and Wildlife photography as well as Airshows.I used it yesterday to photograph an Oil Covered Pelican(06 June 2010)on our Mississippi Gulf Coast and it was published in the paper. It is rugged, sharp, has a quick auto focus.I don't understand why some people put rugged and then heavy. If it is built rugged. It is probably gonna be on the heavy side.I would definitely suggest this to a friend.A+ Canon. The only thing I wish they would do differently is build it like the 70-200mm 2.8L IS USM lens if it is possible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have! I purchased this lens for a trip to the Galapagos Islands & Macchu Pichu but unfortunately didn't use it because I was so close to everything! Since then I have used it with my Canon EOS 40D primarily for sporting events (including the Giants 2010 World Series parade), wildlife/nature and candid "people shots". While I'm not a professional photographer, the clarity and quality of my pictures have been gallery caliber and the envy of all who have seen them. Even though it's weighty and pricey, it's ease of use and picture quality makes it the best investment I've ever made and I highly recommend w/o reservations!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I have owned this lens for about 2 years. It is primarily used for Wildlife and Sports photography. I had read all of the negative reviews before I purchased the lens, and have concluded that there are a lot of people out there that really don't have a clue about lens choice and lighting conditions. No, a 4.5 F lens is not considered a "low light" lens, so don't try to use it as one and then complain about the picture quality. Use this lens for the awesome piece of equipment that it is, and it will not let you down. It has a very fast focus and is built like a tank. If you are considering the purchase of this lens, just go and do it. You will be very happy with it if you know anything at all about photography.
