The Sigma 300-800mm f/5.6 EX DG HSM is an extreme telephoto zoom lens, and ideal for nature/outdoor or sports photography. This lens provides a relatively large constant f/5.6 maximum aperture at all focal lengths.

The use of Apochromatic design and 2 ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements give full correction of chromatic aberration and provide a high level of optical performance. The AF drive for the Canon EOS, Nikon and Sigma mounts are equipped with the silent, responsive and high speed Hyper Sonic Motor and provides fulltime manual focus override.

The improved DG lens design corrects for various aberrations. This lens is specially coated to get the best color balance whilst cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens provides the utmost correction against lateral chromatic aberration, which is a serious problem for digital SLR cameras.

It is also possible to use this lens with Sigma 1.4x EX and 2x EX Apo Tele Converters to convert this lens into an ultra tele-zoom lens, effectively converting it into a 420-1120mm f/8 or 600-1600mm f/11 lens. The lens materials used in this new lens are lead and arsenic free ecological glass.

Note: HSM lenses, while able to manually focus with all Nikon F-mount cameras, will not autofocus with certain older film AF cameras. This is the same limitation as with Nikon's own AF-S lenses. Incompatible models are: N60, N55, N8008/s, N6006, N5005, N4004 & N2020.

Hyper Sonic Motor provides smooth, silent AF with fulltime manual focus override

300-800mm f/5.6 EX DG APO IF HSM Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens Just purchased the lens and have only used it for a few weeks - but it is outstanding. This lens is not for inexperienced photographers. You need to use a tripod, although I got great shots balancing it on my car window (fast shutter speed). No VR, but you should not use VR on a tripod and you can't hand hold this lens and get a good shot. Not because of the lens - it is too heavy to to keep steady by hand. I have a Nikon 200-400 and I really believe the Sigma's quality is just as good. I have nothing bad to say about it. I am wildlife photographer and this lens is just what I needed. AGAIN THIS IS NOT A LENS FOR INEXPERIENCED PHOTOGRAPHERS, but only for those who know how to use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Get It! The lens deserves the title SigMonster. The lens is 2' long with the lens hood attached, and makes for a chore moving the lens about setting up to get your shot. One set up, you master your environment, with an incredible range of 300mm to 800mm. fast speed of f/5.6 even at 800mm! The down side of this lens, if there is any, is the case. The zipppers fail after several uses. I am told they will warranty the case, but I have not looked into that. Recomment a LensCoat, as this lens costs more than many cars on the road today. If this lens won't get your shot, purchase a post card!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Ultimate Telephoto Lens The title says it all. Sharp and versatile, this lens will get you the shot you want better than all the pricey primes and teleconverters in the world! Nikon and Canon make nothing that compares, with each limiting their maximum zoom focal length to half the focal length of this lens. This lens seemlessly covers every focal length from 300mm to 800mm. Pick your spot, then pick your focal length! I won't even list heavy as a con, considering the suitcase of primes and teleconverters that would be required just to dupicate pieces of this lens' range!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! and Wow! I used a friend's Nikon 800mm lens for a bit and this lens is about the same size and just as sharp. The advantage is the zoom range that maintains the sharpness throughout the zoom. I shoot with a D610 and a D800E. Couldn't be more pleased except for the law of physics. What we all want is a 1000mm lens for our full frame cameras that weighs less than a pound and is tack sharp with f2.0 aperture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Far so Good I bought this lens because the zoom range allows me to get pictures(primarily sports from fixed positions) I couldn't otherwise get. My experience supports the very good to excellent image quality up to 700/750 at f 5.6, and good to very good at 800 at f8. I used to be obsessed with image quality but I now believe that a image with good or better image quality is better than no image at all and the zoom range gets me images I couldn't have got before.(I am quite happy with this lens image quality I'm just not sure it matches my 400 f2.8 with 2x extender-particularly my Canon set-up). It seems to focus well. Although it is large I think some folks have made too big of a deal about size. I think it is easier to manage as my 400 f2.8s and I use it regularly on a monopod with no problem. I am content with the build quality, I do not think it is as high as my Canon and Nikon 400s but it is OK In evaluating this lens one must consider you are getting a 300-800 zoom for much less than a 800 fixed lens. With this lens you are getting very competitive image quality(and with todays cameras being good at high isos going to f8 to improve quality at 800 is not such a big deal) and autofocus performance. I bought this lens knowing that I might have more repair issues than with a Nikon or Canon but I think it is a good tradeoff for what it offers. This lens has me as excited going into a fall sports schedule as I have been in a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than its reputation I've used this lens on several trips to the Rocky Mountains for over a year now and this lens consistently delivers very good to superb results up to 700 mm at f5.6, and good results at 800 mm at f6.3. Forget about using it with a Sigma 2x TC - that just degrades the picture quality to useless. The autofocus is super fast, accurate, and quiet. I've photographed Big Horn sheep SPRINTING along a mountain face with this lens and got perfectly sharp pictures!!! Contrast is good/very good, and at f5.6 it beautifully renders the background into a nice, soft blur. I've tried two combinations to support the lens and eventually decided to invest into a Gitzo GT3541L 6x Tripod and a Wimberley Gimbal Type Tripod Head II to get it right - otherwise, the lens is too heavy to get it steady ... But the weight is no problem once you have it on this combination and it's a delight to use with a Nikon D300 - perfect combination, potentially 1200 mm at 5.6!!!! The case the lens comes in is useless. It might be okay for storage, but for any other purpose (hiking) you can't use it. Get the Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 AW II and it will fit in there with the camera attached and the hood reversed - almost ready to shoot. I've hiked with that combination and the tripod with Gimbal head attached to the side of the Lens Trekker for hours and it was perfectly fine. If there is one real criticism I have it's the lens shade. It's a bit wobbly, not particularly well-built, and a bit on the short side. A telescope-type lens hood ala Nikon's super-telephoto lenses should be possible for this price. Taking wildlife pics at sunrise can be tricky with this lens because the lens hood doesn't really provide enough protection ... It's an expensive lens that people like to bash because it's heavy and not a Nikon/Canon ... all those who say negative things about it have lens-envy, that's all I can say!!! This lens is a super performer in most situations and is perfect for its purpose.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Super Zoom-telephoto lens I use this lens for almost a year now. It is a great lensand the zoom is specially handy for composing. I love theimages from this lens. I use this lens with Manfrotto 161 MK2B Tripod and 393 Lensbracket. The lens come in its own carrying case. Problems Encountered: Too big for carry-on in an airliner. Items I Recommend: Manfrotto 161 MK2B Tripod and 393 Lens bracket

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A true wildlife telephoto lens I use this lens for over five years for wildlife photography on my Nikon F6 film camera. It come with an UV and polarizing filter, and it's own carring case. It not need specialized filters, any 46mm filter can be uesed. Polarizing filter canbe rotate easy with a rotating ring. It is a sharp and fast lens. I have no problem at all with the optical quality. Often I use it on 800mm and at f/5,6. Of course even the best lenses - like Nikon or Canon 600mm fix focal lenght lenses - will give a little better quality with stopped down aperture, so it is true for this lens too. I often use it with Sigma 2x or 1,4x teleconverters, and I can't see a quality loss, worth to mention. On a 8' x 6' size projection the picture is still in high quality even at a closer look. Slides always projected at full res. so projected slides are good for quality check. Because the long focal lenght, it is easy to shake the lens during exposure, what makes quality loss. A photographer with this monster lens, need to learn how to use a lens like this size! Autofocus is fast and accurate, but it is mostly depends on the lights and camera, cause the AF sensor is in the camera not in the lens! The camera must controll the focus motor until the picture is sharp. If it doesn't, cahnge your camera! It doesent have manual AF switch, but HSM lenses for Nikon cameras, doesent had to have one. The lens can be override manually even in AF at any times. Turn off the AF on the camera and the lens work in manual focus only. AF switch on lenses need only to disengage the focus ring, so it will not rotate during AF. But by the HSM system it doesent rotate anyway! There is no AF limit switch what would be nice, but I use it in manual focus most of the time. There is no image stabilization, but it is too heavy for hand held photography anyway. The tripod collar well balanced, so easy to turn the camera between portrait and horizontal format. The lenshood is strong and well build but a little short, so I did extended it in a telescopic style like Nikon 600mm lenshood. Sigma should make it that way in a first place. The lens case would be great with a back pack style shoulder harness. Otherwise it is useless for hiking, or carry the lens around. A right size photo back pack or a better carring case is recommended. It is not a splash proof construction, but a piece of garbage bag do the job, and make it weatherproof when it's need, so I don't care about it. But I did use this lens without extra protection, standing in a swamp, when the whole lens get wet due to morning mist, and I had no problem with it. It has worked just fine. The lens is so heavy so it is need a good tripod and a Wimberley gimbal head is recomended. The freedom of composition due to the zoom and the perfect zoom range make this lens, a must for wildlife photographers. I bearly use any other lens for wildlife photography, the Sigma 300-800 cover almost everything I need. I so happy with this lens, I would buy it again.
