Sunex 5.6mm f/5.6 overview

  • 1Description

The Sunex 5.6mm f/5.6 SuperFisheye Lens is a super-wide fisheye lens that covers 185°, with enough overlap to create a full spherical image from just two shots. This lens was designed specifically for digital SLR cameras using APS-C format imagers. With an image circle size of 14.5mm, the SuperFisheye forms a complete circular image within the camera's imager area.

The fixed focus and fixed aperture design of this lens provides optimized image quality for both indoor and outdoor photography. The fixed aperture also simplifies the operation of the lens, and eliminates potential errors.

It is especially well suited for virtual reality and software-assisted panorama stitching. It provides exaggerated perspectives and unusual distortion effects. Sunex also provides a link to a free download of the Dewarper Plug-In software for Photoshop (PC only). Dewarper is a software plug-in for correcting or optimizing distortion taken with popular fisheye lenses, including Sunex SuperFisheye lenses. This program is based on a proprietary algorithm developed by Sunex based on expertise in real-world lens design and manufacturing.

The optional Panoramic Rotator (#SUR3S) is designed exclusively for the SuperFisheye lens, to achieve precise lens rotation about its nodal point. It eliminates the need to determine the location of the nodal point for each lens/camera manually. It has 3 detent positions at 120 degree each.
Made of anodized aluminum with laser-etched markings.

    Sunex 5.6mm f/5.6 reviews

5.6mm f/5.6 SuperFisheye Fixed Focus Lens for Canon Digital SLR is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for quick and easy 360 panoramas I bought second hand, and had to fix the focus, which was easy with a Live View camera (Nikon-to-m43 adapter on an Olympus ep2). Once focussed properly it can give really very impressive results. The lack of moving parts (fixed aperture, nominally fixed focus) means you lose some flexibility, but 95% of the time that is of little consequence. When I optimize the focal length using Hugin, it comes out to be about 4.7mm, which is less than the stated 5.6mm. I'm not sure why that would be, but it matters little. The rotator is very precise, but the click stops were too stiff and harsh for my liking. I dismantled it and cut about a quarter inch off the spring, and now it is fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sunex 5.6 mm f/5.6 185 degree Lens This lens produces a round image of 185 degrees, larger than the supposed 180 degrees produced by the sigma 180 degree fisheye lens. Pros: easy to use, high quality optics giving extremely clear images. Dewarper software is a gem. Capable of 2 shot, 360 degree panoramas, unlike most other 180 degree fisheyes. Cons: Sized for smaller DSLR chips. Will not fill full frame. Apparently one with a full size image circle is in the works.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick and Easy, but not perfect This a simple quick and easy lens, no adjustments and no fiddling around. That makes things very easy, but not easy if you want to get fancy. I like the easy and utility of this simple lens. Edge softness is a little bad, but Sigma 8mm is no better and Sigma 4.5mm is worse.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad Fun to use, bit soft at edges - but probably expected with fisheye. Minimum focus distance is 0.5m, it would be nice if it were less. It's not super amazing resolution or anything, but with some effort you can get good panoramas with the Sunex rotator. But the rotator is not the most user-friendly thing to use, with awkward dismantling, lack of center mark and other issues. I left a review for that too!
