Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 Overview

  • 1Description

A lens of epic proportions, the Nikon F-mount APO 200-500mm f/2.8 EX DG from Sigma is a no-holds-barred super telephoto zoom distinguished by its fast f/2.8 constant maximum aperture and apochromatic design. The optical layout utilizes a series of low dispersion glass elements to effectively eliminate chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and a Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting.

Beyond the unique optical system, this 200-500mm f/2.8 is also characterized by its distinctive green exterior, built-in carry handle, and overall large form factor. Due to the weight and size of this impressive lens, a BP-21 lithium-ion battery is included to power the autofocus and zooming mechanisms, and a built-in LCD is featured on the rear of the lens to highlight the focus position and focal length in use. The rear of the lens has a built-in tripod mount and the rear of the lens can be rotated to accommodate shooting in either the vertical or horizontal orientation. Additionally, rear drop-in 72mm filters can be used in conjunction with the included holder.

If 200-500mm isn't enough reach, the lens is also paired with a dedicated 2x teleconverter to result in an effective 400-1000mm f/5.6 design while still retaining autofocus operation.

Super telephoto zoom is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 300-750mm equivalent focal length range.
Truly impressive f/2.8 constant maximum aperture affords greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter and also suits working in low-light conditions.
Apochromatic optical design utilizes two extra-low dispersion elements and one SLD element to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Due to the large size of the lens, a BP-21 lithium-ion battery is used to aid in faster autofocus and zooming operation.
Integrated LCD panel is featured at the rear of the lens and displays focus distance and focal length.
Internal focusing and zooming design maintains the overall length of the lens during use and also promotes faster performance.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
The lens barrel has an integrated tripod mount, which offers well-balanced support for photographing atop a tripod or monopod. Additionally, the rear of the lens barrel can be rotated, using an integrated knob, for switching between vertical and horizontal camera orientations.
Rear drop-in 72mm filters can be used and the included filter holder permits working with rotating filter types, such as polarizers and variable ND filters.
Included with the 200-500mm f/2.8 lens is a dedicated 2x teleconverter, which doubles the focal length and results in an effective 400-1000mm f/5.6 lens with autofocus support maintained.

    Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 Reviews

200-500mm f/2.8 EX DG APO IF Autofocus Lens for Nikon SLR - Green is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Get what you pay for I bought this to shoot my kids soccer games and to backpack with. I have the Nikon d3000. But when it came I had no idea that it was going to be the size of a cow. So I also had to buy a truck to haul the thing around. It's kind of a pain to fit in my backpack. So when I go back packing I usually end up taking just the lens and nothing else. I know what you are thinking why would I buy this, to answer your question. I got this because I can. I live in America where we have freedom and I thought to my self. Why not. I could pay for college or even buy a better camera body but like everyone says invest in the glass not the body. So I did

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hidden trick I bought this lens because living in a city I needed a better way to look into other people's apartments. This lens delivered. I am able to read text messages from people's phones in the Prudential. I don't mind the size because I needed a reason to blow out the spare bedroom anyways. I did find the magnification was so powerful and crisp that I was able to see back in time. Right now I'm watching the first runs of the Brady Bunch, epic to not have to watch a re-run. I highly suggest selling a kidney or two and investing in this amazing lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You people are crazy For those of you complaining about the size, you obviously have neglected the carrying handle. Although this is not for the everyday selfie, it is an amazing piece of glass. As a professional I use a three man crew for this. One in the middle for support, one on the end for fine tuning and of course me on the end to turn stuff and push buttons. Most of my work revolves around proving the Apollo missions were real. Using this lense I have some great shots of the stitching on the flag Neil Armstrong planted on the first lunar mission.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing at f 2.8 While touring Rio De Janeiro. My goal was to capture the beaches of Copacobana. Considering the poverty and theft in Rio, I decided it was not a good idea to walk through Rio with my d3x. This lens was incredible! From the rooftop and the bedroom of my penthouse suit, I was able to capture the true beauty of the people on the beach. This lens is a little heavy as im use to using my 50mm 1.4 prime. But it gets in really close.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super product! ENOUGH! with the comedian reviewers! I bought four of these last year; they make a great support for a work platform. I used them in the corners of a big piece of plywood, and they work beautifully! Ive got the big end down and the small end attached to the plywood. Super-stable! In fact, if you arrange them just right, you can slip a 2x4 into the handles and it makes a great step! I use the platform to clean out my gutters (I have a one story house). My neighbor came over the other day (hes a camera nut too), and saw the contraption and just started crying. Very weird! And you can use them as a giant scoop to fill the bird feeders, load fertilizer in your spreader, stuff like that. The only trouble is, you have to get rid of all that glass inside. No problem; just use a cold chisel and chip it all out. Then youve got a great scoop; you might have to jerry rig an open and close fitting on the small end, though, if you want to use it like a funnel. My neighbor saw what I was doing, but he left pretty quickly. Then later the rescue squad came and took him to the hospital. Poor guy. Anyway, I saved some of the big pieces of glass. Im going to try to figure out a way to get them to a camera manufacturer; maybe they can use them to make a camera lens. Five stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Transporting i love it but its too much to carry its almost the size of my car. BUT THE BOKEH is like a thing of the past

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens but... I would have given this lens 5 stars but it has lens creep issues. While using a neck strap it will frustrate you because the lens continuously drags on the ground.
