    WD Studio II Reviews

2TB My Book Studio Edition II Quad Interface External Hard Drive is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 248.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unhelpful instructions Instructions say to load the disk before hooking up the drive, but the disk seems to contain only trial software that must be purchased later. I already had RAID manager installed. I haven't used the trial software and don't intend to buy it. The drive is formatted for Apple. The instructions explain how to reformat the drive for Windows using the RAID manager, but the RAID manager doesn't act as the instructions describe. I was able to figure out how to format the drive without following the erroneous instructions. I bought this RAID drive to replace an older smaller WD My Book RAID unit that is failing. Thanks to RAID 1, no lost data. The new drive performs as expected.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looked like a great External HD ....... I bought this item to set up as a Raid 1 with Mac OS X Lion. It looked like a great External Hard Drive for the money. Unfortunately the WD Driver Manager which is required to format this drive is not compatible with Lion. I called WD tech support twice ... they agreed ... not compatible with Lion. WD's website has a new version of this Driver Manager (2.2.6) which it says fixes this problem, but it does not (lots of similar problems on internet forums). Had to return the unit and look for something else.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for video editing I have 2 of these drives which I use primarily for video footage. One has been used for over a year. The other is new. I am a heavy user of video editing software so the drive gets a workout. The mirror drive function gives a lot of peace of mind. I also enjoy the fact that I can connect the 2 seperate units to each other in a daisy-chain so I only use 1 firewire 800 port on my machine. Word of caution however.... Western Digital will provide a replacement drive if one fails during the 5-year warrantly period, but if the controller card or other components outside of one of the two enclosed drives fails, the entire unit must be replaced. If that happens, you will get a new unit, but not your data. Therefore do not consider a RAID1 configuration to be totally safe. You'd be wise to backup to a separate drive periodically.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Build our Business around them We have a small production company that produces 3 reality shows, and upwards of 10-15 commercials a year. We base our whole workflow structure around these WD 2TB Drives. We configure them in Raid1, so that they are mirrored for backup, so if a drive fails it won't be a complete loss. However, we have yet to have a drive fail in 3 years of using these. They are very reliable. We use the Firewire 800 to edit and the ESATA to transfer large amounts of footage. We own 150+ of these drives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for Raid 0 storage This is my second WD Studio Edition drive. I use them primarily for work-in progress... batch processing large quantities of photos and short-term storage. Hard-drives will fail eventually and by storing the same data on two seperate mirrored drives, (if set up for it) you really should not lose anything... I've been using raid drives for close to 10 years and have had several single drives die.... But have never lost data thanks to the second drive. So..... I love the peace of mind that comes with storing things on a mirrored raid drive. I also love the flexibility of the 4 different interfaces... Very happy...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2TB My Book Studio Edition Exactly what I wanted at a great price {$} Everything has gone well with this external Drive, except I was curious about how to pull the drives out and now the top lid will not stay down & latched. Not a deal breaker for me, however if you run into the same thing you need to push the center piece of the latch down, other wise you get a error code, again no big deal. I wanted big drives for lots of storage at a inexpensive price and that's what I got. Those who complain about the case being plastic, again no big deal. It does not matter what the outside case is made of. The important parts is the guts of the drive, bottom line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Hard Drive For Any Mac User! Great Drive for the price. I use this drive with my Mac. I love how all you do is plug it in right out of the box and it just works. It's great for backing up all my files through time machine. I also use it to edit with Final Cut Pro. It's a great all around drive for studio use. It includes a firewire 800 port and an esata port to take me into the future. It sounds petty but I also like that it's silver to match my G5 tower. Western digital has always been very dependable. This drive couples very nicely with my 500gb My Passport Studio drive I purchased early last year. I would highly recommend this drive to anyone!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from well built, great performance The drive enclosure is fairly well built and the performance with the Oxford OXUFS936DSE controller that it uses is very good. I was surprised that the drive controller information is not documented anywhere on the web. I gathered the information by peering inside the unit. I have had no issues using it thus far with my mac mini. Performance in a raid1 configuration over fw800 averages around 60(write)/80(read) MB/sec. The one con is that I found the drives to be somewhat noisy but this is highly subjective and I am comparing it to the noise from a mac mini. I was able to get around this by locating the drive in an adjacent room and using a 15' firewire cable.
