JMI Telescopes MFC8 overview

  • 1Description

JMI Telescopes MOTOFOCUS is a motorized electronic focusing mechanism that affixes to your classic Celestron 8" telescope.  In this particular case, that includes the C8, C8+, C8-S, C8-SGT, Classic 8, Celestar 8, CGE 800, G-8, Great Polaris C8, NexStar 8 GPS, Polaris C8, Powerstar 8, Super C8, Super C8+, Super Polaris C8, Ultima 8, and Ultima 2000.  It will also fit early C5 scopes with dual fork arms and the 9.25" scopes with an orange Ring at the base of the focus knob.  It installs easily, and can be quickly detached for transport.

MOTOFOCUS operates off of a supplied 9-volt battery; with a bit of practice, you'll be able to adjust your focuser in increments much smaller than the width of a business card.  In particular, springing for the MOTOFOCUS gives you much more enjoyable high-magnification viewing from your scope, with finer control over the image and much less user-induced vibrations.

If you opt for it exclusively at the time of this purchase, you can also have a numerical expression of your focuser position.  The economical DFC Digital Focus Counter is an accurate 3-digit mechanical counter which "piggybacks" upon the MOTOFOCUS, and requires no batteries or hand controllers beyond what you'll already be using.

The much more sophisticated DRO Digital Readout is a 4-digit LED that can attach to MOTOFOCUS and other JMI Telescopes focusers.  Beyond a finer expression of focus position, the DRO also offers the capacity to be controlled remotely via a computer as well as to be removed and reattached without needing recalibration.

If choosing the DFC or DRO upgrades, you must do so at the time of this purchase-they cannot be retroactively fitted to the MOTOFOCUS.

Note: DFC or DRO upgrades are only available at the time of initial purchase.

    JMI Telescopes MFC8 reviews

MOTOFOCUS Electric Telescope Focusing Motor is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is my most rewarding telescope accessory to date! I actually reviewed this when emailing two of my stargazing friends yesterday. Here's an excerpt of the email I sent them: . I just got an AWSEOME accessory that I'm loving. It's a motorized focuser so now I don't get any vibration in between focus adjustments it just dials right in with finesse at the push of a button. This is an upgrade with amazing experiential value. It motivates me even more to go out and use my telescope. It should be standard issue with any telescope that you pay thousands for. I would not want to use my scope without it now. Even if I had paid $500 for it, I would not have buyer's regret - it's that good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have accessory! Very useful and simplistic and more importantly, works! If you need to be able to focus your scope without scope shake then this item is the ticket and especially for single arm mounts which have a tad more wobble to them than a dual fork. The system goes on with ease and has three speed settings. The slowest setting you can hardly hear but does such a great job fine tuning that you could not do with the OEM tuning knob. So this could and should be on your must have accessory list. Best $ you could spend for sure. The system even runs off a very reliable and common 9 volt battery! No fancy hard to find expensive battery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High Quality but Pricey I had originally planned to design and build my own automated focusing system for my Celestron telescope but after finding the JMI Motofocus, decided to purchase the unit instead. It provides mulitple speeds for both rapid coarse and very fine control over focus adjustments, perfect for both visual observations and astrophotography, and completely eliminates the shake issues associated with manually trying to focus on an object, especially at higher magnifications. I have no complaints regarding installation or use other than the fact that the unit relies on a 9V batter for power. I'll eventually augment this with a mod so that I can use a plug-in AC adapter as an alternate power source. Based on the componentry I believe that this unit is significantly overpriced; I would have expected it to be in the $80-$100 range based on (my estimate of) initial design costs and manufacturing costs. If you are willing to dish out $200 for it you'll get a quality product that's easy to install, portable and usable right out of the box.
