Vienna Symphonic Library Solo Strings I - Vienna Instruments

Vienna Instruments - Solo Strings I from Vienna Symphonic is a sample-based virtual instrument, featuring the Violin, Viola, Violoncello and Double Bass. Performed by 4 soloists with many years of international concert work, the library provides instruments that are sensitive and clear, exact and homogeneous, technically perfect and utterly convincing in their musicality.

Apart from the entire sample library of the Horizon Series' Solo Strings Edition, this instrument contains many additional articulations. "Zigane," the leisurely "smeared" portamentos, are particularly impressive as Interval Performances using the enhanced audio engine's algorithms. Other articulations are the fast Interval Performances using legato, marcato and spiccato techniques.

"Harsh" articulations are played with an especially raw, almost brutal attack and are available as superbly effective Interval and Repetition Performances. Furthermore, there are special Performance Trills, repetitions in spiccato and ricochet articulations, sustains with fading vibrato, ponticello, sul tasto and numerous natural and artificial harmonics.

The Vienna Instruments user interface is clearly arranged and includes pre-configured patches for immediate playability with no learning curve. The interface uses a powerful proprietary streaming audio engine that can load up to 3,456 articulations (patches) on one MIDI channel.

Load times are extremely low and 64 stereo voices per instance can stream from the hard disc. A RAM optimizing utilities clears unused samples out of RAM. Users can easily create their own instruments, using "drag and drop" functionality, and the instrument provides the ability for velocity crossfades and release control to be switched on or off in real time.

Vienna Symphonic Library Orchestral Strings I - Vienna Instruments

Vienna Instruments - Orchestral Strings I from Vienna Symphonic Library is a sample-based virtual instrument, featuring a Violin Ensemble (14 players) and a Viola Ensemble (10 players.) For the recording sessions, the violinists were headed by Christian Eisenberger, who has collaborated with artists and conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Martha Argerich, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Herbert von Karajan, Gidon Kremer, Kent Nagano, Roger Norrington, Murray Perahia, Andras Schiff, Georg Solti and many others. The viola ensemble was headed by Anett Homoki who is a member of the Vienna Chamber Philharmonic as well as of the Volksoper Vienna.

The string sections of the Vienna Instruments offer an extremely wide range of articulations. The special qualities of this instrument are a result of the multitude of performances it contains. With larger ensembles, the random effect of articulations like Performance Trills or fast Legatos is especially pronounced, lending those patches remarkable authenticity. The larger the ensemble, the more intense the random effect, that is the natural "inexactitude" among the musicians when changing from one tone to the next.

Additional samples are also included like short staccatos, expressive Interval Legatos, espressivo con sordino, as well as extensions of the tonal ranges for sustains and staccatos.

The Vienna Instruments user interface is clearly arranged and includes pre-configured patches for immediate playability with no learning curve. The interface uses a powerful proprietary streaming audio engine that can load up to 3,456 articulations (patches) on one MIDI channel.

Vienna Symphonic Library Dimension Strings I Standard Edition - Vienna Instruments (Download)

The Vienna Dimension Strings I Standard Edition from Vienna Symphonic Library is a sample-based virtual instrument that pushes the envelope when it comes to sampling technology. The recordings in Vienna's famed Silent Stage started as early as the fall of 2008. With over 230,000 samples in the Standard Edition and over 700,00 for the full library, it is by far the most ambitious and intensive production in the history of the Vienna Symphonic Library.

The twenty-four string players of this library were recorded in homogenous groups (eight violins, six violas, six cellos and four double basses) to capture the slight imperfections of human playing. However, individual microphones were also used for each player, allowing access to each individual voice, with each string of each instrument recorded in its full range.

With the included presets one can decide whether to have the musicians play on all strings (with a change to the next string in fifth intervals), or forced playing on a certain string. Playing with no open strings is also an option. The technique of using individual microphones is well suited for divisi writing. For the violins, preset setups for two groups of four players and four desks of two players are provided.

As with all the company's libraries, the emphasis is on making the instruments sound as if they are being played by real players, not a quantified and sterile collection of sounds. Even the best musicians never play in perfect unison. To that end, individual changes in dynamic levels of the players within a group can be achieved easily with velocity crossfades. It is also possible to designate one or two "weak" musicians to play sloppy notes, with hesitant or delayed starts, for instance.

Vienna Symphonic Library Dimension Strings II Standard Library - Vienna Instruments (Download)

Vienna Dimension Strings II Standard Library from Vienna Symphonic Library is the sequel to Vienna Dimension Strings I, containing nearly all the same playing techniques, but with the string instruments exclusively recorded "con sordino" (with mutes). Playing with mutes dampens the transmission of energy from the strings to the body of the instrument and softens or darkens the sound. The effect perfectly suits intimate arrangements and emotional ballads, and when added to normal string sound, provides a broad, soft, and warm string environment.

The players were recorded in four homogeneous groups (eight violins, six violas, six cellos and four double basses), but with dedicated microphones for each player. Each string of each instrument was recorded in its full range (approximately one octave plus a fifth), and with the included presets it is easy to decide whether to have the musicians play on all strings (with a change to the next string in fifth intervals), or forced playing on a certain string. Or choose to play with no open strings.

When playing as a group, musicians continually adapt, matching timbre, intensity, vibrato, intonation, bow speed, and more. All these interactions happen automatically in a good ensemble, led by a good conductor, and reveal the "magic" of a live performance. With this library, individual changes in dynamic levels of the players within a group can be easily achieved with velocity crossfades. It is also possible to designate one or two "weak" musicians to play sloppy notes, with hesitant or delayed starts, for instance.

Vienna Symphonic Library Harps - Vienna Instruments

Harps from Vienna Symphonic is a sample-based virtual instrument, featuring two harps. The collection provides the ability to write orchestral music from the mid-19th century that requires two harps.

Harp 1, played by Ruth Rojahn, includes normal, muted, harmonics and bisbigliando single notes and medium speed major, diminished, pentatonic and whole tone glissandi. The controller structure of the library provides extremely flexible and quick access to various controls, allowing the user to switch between ranges, different tempos, up and down movements and different scales in real-time while playing.

The second harp, played by Julia Reth, contains an even larger number of single notes, also offering playing styles like damped, fingernail playing and pedal glissandos. A lovely ethereal effect is created by the bisbigliando variations, the whispering of tender tremolos on two strings playing the same note.

The Vienna Instruments user interface is clearly arranged and includes pre-configured patches for immediate playability with no learning curve. The interface uses a powerful proprietary streaming audio engine that can load up to 3,456 articulations (patches) on one MIDI channel.

Load times are extremely low and sixty-four stereo voices per instance can stream from the hard disc. A RAM optimizing utilities clears unused samples out of RAM. Users can easily create their own instruments, using "drag and drop" functionality, and the instrument provides the ability for velocity crossfades and release control to be switched on or off in real time.

Vienna Instruments - Woodwinds I from Vienna Symphonic is a sample-based virtual instrument, featuring the four main wind instruments of the orchestra, namely the flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon, as well as their corresponding ensemble formations, with three players per ensemble.

All the original players are top flight professionals and include Gisela Mashayekhi-Beer who was the solo flutist of the Zurich Opera orchestra and taught at the Bruckner University, Linz and at the Vienna Music University. Markus Deuter is the first oboist of numerous German orchestras and the clarinetist Daniel Hörth looks back on an international concert career with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra and others. Martin Machovits, among other assignments, is solo bassoon player at the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The solo instruments as well as ensembles contained in the Woodwinds I volume offer fast Interval Performances in legato and marcato styles, marcato Interval Performances in "normal" tempo, as well as Performance Trills. The solo flute and clarinet arpeggios include major, minor and diminished broken chords in legato and staccato styles. The solo flute's mordents and the French oboe's flutter tonguing are outstanding and the slow legato repetitions of the solo flute are also especially appealing.

The oboe in this collection is the French Oboe from the Horizon Series Library and therefore offers playing techniques with vibrato.

Vienna Symphonic Library Recorders - Vienna Instruments

Vienna Symphonic Library's Recorders contains instruments including soprano recorder, alto recorder, tenor recorder, and great bass recorder.

Compared with its close relative the flute (flauto traverso), the instrument range of the wooden recorder (flauto dolce) is more limited in terms of pitch and dynamics. This is one of the reasons why the recorder was replaced by the (traverse) flute in orchestras around the 18th century. However, recorders were very popular during medieval times and into the renaissance, and even in the baroque era famous composers such as Telemann, Bach, Handel and Vivaldi wrote pieces for these instruments.

Due to the absence of upper harmonics and a predominance of odd harmonics, the sound of recorders is soft and mellow. The instrument is often unfairly marginalized as a toy for children or amateur players, with its main application being music pedagogy and domestic music. However, contemporary composers of all genres (from Luciano Berio and Mauricio Kagel to Keith Jarrett) have written demanding pieces for the recorder, expanding its timbral range in a virtuosic way. Recorders are used as solo instruments in modern film music, adding a particular exotic timbre with references to ancient or far eastern worlds in orchestral scores. All four recorders of this Instrument Collection were played by Austrian flute and recorder virtuoso Leopold Eibl, a sought-after soloist and chamber musician.

Vienna Symphonic Library Brass I - Vienna Instruments

Vienna Instruments - Brass I from Vienna Symphonic is a sample-based virtual instrument, featuring the basic brass instruments of the orchestra, both as solo instruments and the corresponding ensembles. These include the Trumpet, Viennese Horn, Tenor Trombone, Tuba, Trumpet Ensemble (3 players,) Horn Ensemble (4 players) and Trombone Ensemble (3 players.)

The four original performers are masters of their trade. Trumpet player Freddy Staudigl, Horn player Marcus Schmidinger and Trombone player Johann Schodl are not only founding members of the renowned ensemble "Brassissimo," but are also active as soloists and orchestral musicians on an international level. The Tuba player Christoph Kiene is also internationally known as a lecturer.

Apart from the usual articulations, this Vienna Instruments Collection also provides fast Interval Performances in legato and marcato, Performance Trills, arpeggios (major, minor and diminished in legato and staccato) and mordents. Trumpet and trombone offer the complete muted playing techniques, not only as solo instruments but also in the ensembles.

Another specialty is the trumpet ensemble's "out of tune" sustains, as they occasionally happen in real orchestral situations. The three trumpet players don't hit the note exactly at the beginning of a part and a beat frequency ensues which is corrected as the tone progresses, eventually resulting in a clean homophony. The trumpets also feature "rips and falls."

The trombone ensembles also offer a specialty. Clusters of three notes with half tone intervals are available in staccato (two variations,) sustained, crescendo and diminuendo (in two tone lengths,) sforzato, and even as Repetition Performances.

Vienna Symphonic Library Brass II - Vienna Instruments

Brass II from Vienna Symphonic is a sample-based virtual instrument, containing the instruments needed for large-scale orchestral arrangements, such as those required by a Wagnerian score for example. Oriented toward Wagner's Ring Cycle, the collection includes the bass trumpet, the contrabass trombone, Wagner tuba and contrabass tuba, all with the standard single note and Performance articulations like Interval Performances, Repetitions and Performance Trills, etc.

As an alternative to the Viennese horn, Brass II contains a new solo horn, the triple horn, Yamaha's master instrument in F/B♭/high F, recorded down to the lowest register (A1.) Also included are the piccolo trumpet, cimbasso, and the "Epic Horns" from the Horizon Series, an impressive sounding body of eight double horns that not only fulfills the sonic ideal of the theatrical late Romantic orchestra, but also meets the challenge of "larger than life" scores for modern cinema.

The Vienna Instruments user interface is clearly arranged and includes pre-configured patches for immediate playability with no learning curve. The interface uses a powerful proprietary streaming audio engine that can load up to 3,456 articulations (patches) on one MIDI channel.

Vienna Symphonic Library Dimension Brass I - Vienna Instruments

Vienna Dimension Brass I from the Vienna Symphonic Library is a multi-sample based virtual instrument delivering the sound of several brass quartets. Four ensembles are presented with the Low Brass ensemble featuring a mixture of instruments, while the other three present trumpet, French horn and trombone ensembles.

Recorded in Vienna's famed Silent Stage, the virtual instrument goes beyond just using multi-samples. Every note was played by a well-rehearsed ensemble of four brass players, but with each instrument recorded separately. Access to each individual voice is available, but the result is not the sound of four soloists. Rather, the "ensemble-sound" retains its cohesiveness, whether playing in unison, divisi, or even in four-part harmony.

Vienna Dimension Brass includes the free Vienna Instruments player. To make the most of these unique multi-dimensional samples, the optional Vienna Instruments PRO is recommend (a fully functional demo is included with the software). The PRO version provides much great creative control over the huge content.

Vienna Symphonic Library Imperial - Vienna Instruments

The Vienna Imperial from Vienna Symphonic Library is a virtual grand piano based on samples taken of a venerable Bösendorfer Imperial 290-755, equipped with the piano manufacturer's CEUS recording/playback technology. Using the CEUS system, the engineers at VSL were able to record even the most subtle key movements and positions, creating close to 70,000 samples that are accurate to within 0.001 milliseconds of any action.

The 1,200 recorded samples per key represent a magnitude of sampling detail, that includes the implementation of meticulously recorded pedal-up and pedal-down notes in up to 100 velocities, comprehensive sympathetic resonances, and multiple release samples, make the Vienna Imperial a superbly realistic sampled piano. There are simply no audible steps between the singular velocity layers, and every single key has its own authentic velocity curve.

The Vienna Imperial is easy to use, with the Basic View of the user interface allowing you to choose between 3 distinct recording positions (close, player, and audience). The Advanced View provides quick and easy access to more control options such as the convolution reverb, EQ, pedal noises, sympathetic resonances, stereo width, MIDI sensitivity, and more.

Harpsichord

The harpsichord has a famously bright sound, rich in overtones. Typically a Baroque instrument, the harpsichord has played a minimal role in classical and romantic music. In modern literature, however, it has been rediscovered by a broad range of musicians, and is also used poignantly and effectively in film and TV music. In our own Silent Stage, the following single notes and repetition performances of a two manual harpsichord were recorded: 8' register solo, 8' double, and tutti (a combination of two 8' registers and one 4' register)

Harmonium

The harmonium is a free-reed instrument, meaning that air streaming past reeds of different lengths causes them to vibrate. Unlike organ pipes, the harmonium's reeds produce more disharmonic overtones, creating a unique undulating sound

Prepared Piano

The prepared piano is a technique introduced in 1949 by John Cage, where objects like erasers, nails, wire, paper, etc., are inserted between a piano's strings in certain places, causing them to produce additional tones, harmonics, or percussive sounds. Our team also treated the Bösendorfer grand piano with bare hands (e.g., glissandos over the strings) and with wood mallets in order to get a multitude of creative sounds and colors

Vienna Symphonic Library Percussion - Vienna Instruments

Vienna Instruments - Percussion from Vienna Symphonic is a sample-based virtual instrument, containing all of the percussion instruments of the orchestra. Many instruments are available in an additional second version, such as the Timpani 2 (with up to eight velocities,) snare drum 2 (up to 12 velocities, with and without snare,) bass drum 2, field drum 2, tambourine 2, triangle 2, suspended cymbals 2 and a-due cymbals 2. Also included are concert toms, roto toms and Taiko drums.

The collection also contains production-ready instruments, processed with high-end studio equipment and put into the right aural perspective using multi-sampled convolution reverb from the Vienna Symphonic Library's MIR development program. The basic percussion instruments (timpani, snare and bass drum, tambourine, suspended cymbals, a-due cymbals, glockenspiel, triangle, xylophone, tubular bells, tam-tam and concert toms) are available not only as samples with minimal reverb, but also with the reverb of the world-famous Wiener Konzerthaus in various stage positions.

Vienna Symphonic Library Choir - Vienna Instruments

Vienna Choir from Vienna Symphonic Library is an impressive vocal collection of the human voice, featuring all four sections of a traditional choir. The challenges of achieving perfect tone, intonation, consistency and stamina were tackled and overcome by the hand-selected singer from Austria's leading choirs.

Hundreds of hours were spent performing with utmost perfection and even a surprising passion that imbues every recorded note and interval, a testament to the professionalism of these outstanding artists. Vienna Choir covers the full range of the soprano, alto, tenor and bass ensembles.

Complete human voice choir sample library with all four sections represented - soprano, alto, tenor and bass
Vowels "A" (aah) as staccatos, sustains and legato performances, at 4 dynamic levels
Staccato repetitions of the syllables "ta", "pa", "ra", "sa", and "tu", "pu", "ru", "su"

Vienna Symphonic Library Soprano Choir - Vienna Instruments (Standard Library, Download)

The Soprano Choir from the Vienna Symphonic Library is a sample-based virtual instrument featuring sixteen singers, who can not only sing the soprano's whole tonal range, but also harmonically blend in with the group's overall sound. A standout from this library is the sampled vocal legato - the Soprano Choir's Legato Performance Patches - that renders these fluid notes very naturally within the Vienna Instruments player.

Articulations include the vowels "U" (ooh) and "A" (aah) as staccatos, sustains, legato sustains, crescendos and diminuendos, fortepianos and sforzatos. In addition, there are staccatos of the syllables "ra", "sa", and "ta". It should be noted that this group of singers is different from the soprano ensemble included in the Vienna Instruments Collection Vienna Choir.

Vienna Symphonic Library Solo Voices - Vienna Instrument (Standard Library, Download)

Solo Voices from the Vienna Symphonic Library takes on the task of recording the oldest and most expressive musical instrument. To achieve a homogenous timbre over the full register of the human voice, four female voices (coloratura soprano, soprano, mezzo soprano, alto) and three male voices (tenor, baritone, bass) were selected.

Multiple takes were performed to achieve perfect tone, intonation and consistency. As a result the collection allows for an accurate and authentic realization of polyphonic vocal repertoire, both as a cappella performances, or in various other instrumental combinations.

As a whistler, Schmidinger possesses a very homogeneous timbre over a wide key range of approximately two octaves. A comprehensive range of articulations include single notes in various lengths (staccato, portato, looped sustains), with and without vibrato, legato performances, portamentos, repetitions and trills and even bends and falls.
