The AT875R from Audio-Technica is a line and gradient condenser, phantom powered, short (7") shotgun microphone for capturing audio. It can be used in various environments for applications such as videos, TV broadcasts, and ENG (Electronic News Gathering) productions.

The high-performance microphone features smooth, natural-sounding on-axis audio quality and excellent off-axis rejection of sound arriving from the sides and rear of the mic. The AT875R operates on 11 to 52V phantom power, and has a standard XLR output connector and is compatible with some of the smaller professional cameras.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mic for price Purchased this to go with a Canon XA10. Great fit, and most importantly is the length, which means the tip of the mic/wind screen isnt seen in the lens. The mic also comes with a couple of O-RINGS that slip over the end of the mic and makes for a good fit in the XA10's mic cradle. Another mic i have which i was using before i purchased this one i had to rap some neoprene around it to clamp it in securely. It also comes with a foam wind screen. If you wish to purchase a fur windscreen, get one no longer than 125mm (5) overall to go with this. Dont purchase the Rode WS6 (as i did), as recommended in the accessories, as it is to long and can been seen in the video of smaller cameras like the XA10.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bang for your buck This is the first shotgun mic that I've bought for my Canon XH-A1, so I'm just learning about audio equipment, right now. Right off the bat, it's sounded miles better than the on-board mic, though I guess that's not hard to do. The amount of incredibly audio you receive out of a mic so small is incredible. Speaking of the size, it's perfect for an on-camera mic that won't be poking in the shot. The only thing you should ever be worried about is looking sort of odd with a boom pole holding a mic that's no bigger than 7 inches. Also, due to the mic's size, it feels as though it's not going to be too durable, but maybe I'm wrong.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great performance at this price point I bought it to use with my DSLR and a TASCAM DR-60D audio recorder. Vocal reproduction, which is really all I'm concerned with, is very rich and natural, not at all tinny. I've used better shotgun mics but they were literally several times the cost of this oneand also much less suited to being used on camera. It's compact, and the pattern is right where you want it to be in terms of limiting background noise vs. being excessively finicky about where you point it. If you have a sound guy and a boom and you want the best possible sound quality and off-axis noise rejection, this probably isn't the mic for you. But if you're shooting by yourself and you want pretty good sound at a pretty cheap price, this is the best out there.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Camera mic and more I have this mic on 3 cameras. It has been a great mic for picking up NAT sound. I just got back from a shoot overseas where we had to pack light. I used this mic plus a shock mount and a mono pod to boom interviews. I would normally pack my Neumann 185 because it is small, but it doesn't do a good job outdoors. The AT875R did a great job. Although I had a dead cat on the mic, I did have a little wind noise on one interview. There was also one interview that had a little extra bass to it, I think this was because of close placement of the mic to his chest. Both interviews will be completely usable with a little EQ. This is a great general purpose mic.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Value I have not been able to find my long shotgun mic and I needed something for my new Sony FS7. I needed to find something I could trust for a good price. Somebody on dvxuser mentioned the AT875. The test I saw indicated the side and rear rejection wasn't great. The first thing I shot with it was an outdoor event with a busy street that was at times behind me and at times to the side. The AT875 did very well especially considering the low price. The sound quality is also good for the price. It does seem to have a high end peak but that is common with shotgun mics. Also, the build quality is good and nothing I am worrying about.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great mic! I bought this to replace my Rode NTG 2. I was using the Rode with the Zoom H4n and there just wasn't enough sesitivity from the Rode, and not enough gain from the preamps on the Zoom. I often had the input gain up in the 90+ range (0-100 scale). Now I am using the Tascam DR 100 II with the AT 875, and it is a diferent ball game.The AT 875 is very senitive and enables me to use much less gain on the recorders, making for a much cleaner recording, now I only need a gain of 3-4 on a 1-10 scale.It is a good mic for booming because of the sensitivity and because it is so light. Pushing the gain on any of the prosumer recorders is asking for noise and hiss.I liked this mic so much I bought another one. So I have one on my Canon XA-10 and one with my audio kit. I also have the Sennhiser MKE 600 which is very nice, but not as senitive as the AT 875. The Sennhiser has a little better sound and has better side rejection, and can run on battery, but it costs 2+ times as much as the AT 875. Between my Rode NTG II, the Sennhiser MKE 600, and the AT 875, I use the AT 875 the most!I consider a must have in my kit.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent minimal noise vibration The primary reason I bought this mic is because most shotgun mics were making a lot of bumping noises on my C100 Mark II camera. I researched many mics but I trusted to order this one and that was it! Well... This mic does not come with Low Cut-Off and I was afraid when I ordered as my sony NX5 shotgun on the C-100 Mark II produces unwanted bass when handling. Thing is, the C100 cameras don't have low cut available on the menus... Believe that???! So... Problem solved! This mic in review doesn't come with low cut either but it's like it's already built in it seems... Very low and thin handling noise while it captures all the lows needed for voices or anything else you want to capture but still quiet on handling regardless if you're using this on camera or on a Boom... Wow. I can now touch the camera body and bottoms all day... I have this mic mounted on my Canon C-100 Mark II AND this is the ONLY microphone that I've seen at this price that has such a narrow pickup rivaling big shotguns. The bigger the tube the narrower the pick up is. It's amazing that one this tiny can be so narrow. Having the subject in front, audio is clear, then turn this mic a tad away and the sound drops considerably which is great. I also made a test right in front of my super loud window air conditioner outside. I turned 180 degrees, the noise was almost gone. Testing The mic on its sides, the audio was still quiet while nice and strong on whatever is in front of it. Very direct mic with excellent sound rejection on sides and back. When I have to touch and operate buttons on my camera, there is near zero bump noises. There's nothing worse than those bumps especially at full frequently which adds unwanted BASS on it thus damaging your headphones and speakers when reviewing the footage on camera of computer. Again, this mic took care of that issue. it comes with 2 O Rings. Many people don't know what those rubber rings are for! A lot of people complain that the shotgun mics is either too thick or too thin. The O Rings are EXACTLY FOR that! it it's too thin, put the rings on!! Simply slide them on the mic... I included 2 pictures of this mic in review attached to my camera with the O Rings which most camera mic holders are already designed to receive the O rings in between the spaces. Please see images. Bottom line: 1- excellent handling vibration /bump noise (even though it does not feature a low cut 2- excellent narrow pick up pattern even bring a short shotgun. Amazing... 3- Cheap and nice. 4- some noise floor at a minimum and that of course depends on the quality of your camera pre amps. Very quiet on the C-100 Mark II

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mic for DSLR + JuicedLink I'm using this mic with JuicedLink preamp on my DSLR. It works GREAT. If you have some cash and looking to upgrade from something like Rode VideoMic Pro, I highly recommend this setup. Sound quality is much clearer, noise is much lower, and you get far more volume amplification. This mic is compact and lightweight yet it doesn't pick up the lens stabilizer noise if mounted on the camera's hot shoe with a shock mount -- this had been a big problem for me with VideoMic Pro. I went for the kit (with a shock mount & short XLR cable) which I think is a great deal.
