Lensbaby Composer Overview

The Lensbaby Composer Special Effects SLR Lens is part of the Lensbaby series of SLR lenses, and offers the same spectacular special-effect results. However, the Composer introduces a completely new design. Based on a ball and socket configuration, this version allows for smoother selective focus control.

The Composer will retain its position after being bent, which makes it easy to use even with one hand. Users also no longer have to squeeze the lens to focus. They can simply tilt the lens to a desired angle and then focus with a traditional barrel focusing ring.

A Lensbaby lens is a hybrid between a bellows camera and a tilt-shift camera. It allows for selective focusing with SLR cameras. It will bring one area of a photo into sharp focus, surrounded by gradually increasing blur. Effects like blurring, glowing highlights, and subtle, prismatic color distortions can all be achieved without software manipulations. The lens can be bent off-center in any direction for different results.

The Composer features the Optic Swap System. Lensbaby has developed a line of different "optics" that can be interchanged with the Muse and Composer versions. This provides artists with an almost unlimited variety of looks and styles to capture their unique visions.

The Composer comes supplied with the Double Glass Optic, which provides the sharpest focus in its range. It offers a tack sharp sweet spot, with minimal diffusion at all aperture settings. Also available optionally are the Plastic Optic for an ultra-soft and ethereal look, the Single Glass Optic for that vintage look, or the Pinhole/Zone Plate for softer, dreamier focus images that are equally sharp from edge to edge.

No electronic communication is possible between the camera and the lens. All operation is strictly manual. Automatic light metering is possible by shooting in aperture priority mode for almost all digital and film SLR camera bodies except certain Nikon bodies including the D40, D50, D60, D70, D70S, D80, D90, D100, N50, N65, N70, N75, N80, plus Kodak 14N and ProN, and Fuji S1, S2, and S3.
The lens aperture can be changed by inserting different size aperture discs.
The Composer features a unique manual focus design which requires more rotation to move the optic as you approach infinity. This makes it easier to focus on objects at intermediate and distant depths than regular manual focus lenses.

Beside the ability to switch out the many different effects lenses, I like the all position swivel part of the lens. That is where you can customize your shot.

I love this lens. Mostly use it for my own personal work but also can make for great images during portrait sessions. Great how it holds itself in place after adjusting. Also very easy to change the aperture rings.

I cut my teeth on the 3G, Control Freak and Muse. The composer is certainly a user friendly piece of equipment to add to the list. I needed a solid mount for video creation using Lensbaby's Optic Swap assortment. Being able to lock down the effect is a plus. A great tool Lensbaby!

I first used this lens in college to do some tilt shift time lapse. I got spectacular professional results! You have to manually place the aperature in, but that's not a big deal overall. It's a nifty lil lens for a little price.

This is a fun addition to my kit....little bit of a learning curve, though once I got the hang of finding the sweet spot, I got some great results. Still lots to learn....excited to experiment. And as always, B&H Customer Service ROCKS!

Can I use this lensbaby with a Nikon d300?
Asked by: Michelle M.
Yes, all of our Nikon F-mounted lenses will be compatible with your Nikon D300 camera, including the Composer with Double Glass. It should work in Aperture Priority or Manual mode and your in-camera light meter should work.

This item includes some optic? Which one?
Asked by: Anonymous
In the package I ordered the optic included was the double glass the one with the green ring. Lens Baby codes it's optics with a color ring for quick identification.

question

Just what is this Lensbaby? I see it advertised at times but never seen what it does.
Asked by: Anonymous
Like other Lensbaby models, the Composer will allow for you to select an area of the frame to focus on, via manipulation of the outer portion of the lens. This simulates the effect of a tilt-shift lens, or very pronounced shallow depth of field. The main difference with this model, is that the selected position does not need to be held by hand. It will stay on its own.
