Carson CloseUp overview

  • 1Description

Butterflies in a meadow, paintings in a museum, the view from your cabin or hotel—the Carson Optical 6x18 CloseUp Monocular will help you enjoy them all. This pocket-size optic's 6x magnification is strong enough to see distant details, but it's called the CloseUp because it can focus on objects just 10" away. The 10mm eye relief makes the monocular comfortable to use, even if you're wearing eyeglasses, and focusing is easy – just twist the barrel.

    Carson CloseUp reviews

6x18 CloseUp Monocular is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality in a little package. I love this little beast. When I first got it, it came off the cold Puralator truck. I brought it in and opened it. When I put it up to my eye it fogged up, but I was still astonished at the clarity. The amount of magnification in this little beast is pretty dam good for the size of it. It works on close up stuff as well. About 1Ft away I can zoom in and fill the field of view with my dogs eye (very cool to see by the way). A couple of down sides is it doesn't work the greatest in low light due to the small aperture. I can however just barely see the moons of Jupiter with it. And it has almost no eye relief. So it can't be used while wearing glasses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent design and function use daily to see number of bus 6 or more blocks away allowing more time to pick up packages and move into position for boarding calmly can see clear details of objects on the ground without bending over close up can see threads of cloth and ones own skin surface able to see everything in home magnified...details on walls, ceiling, floor...can see the tiny dots of the TV screen Very practicle and also fun to explore the environmentl No complaints yet. The pouch fits on my belt. Velcro easy to open and seems secure at this time. Pouch material may be a little thin for long term wear over time. But one can always get another pouch. Great size fits in hand, easy to change focus...I am very impressed. The monocular feels stable in construction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I enjoy this instrument Perfect for the naturalist on the go. I use mine to observe birds around campus, view the moon, the moons of Jupiter, the Andromeda galaxy, and small objects like insect larvae or freshwater crustaceans. Decent resolution down to around 100 ??m and clear viewing overall. I only use it with abundant light, as the aperture is a bit small. I can view with my glasses on (just barely) as the eye relief is modest. Definitely worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performs as specified. This Monocular is not premium quality, which would be too much to expect at the low price. But it is also not low quality, cheap, or flimsy either. I found it a very good value for the money. It focuses, as specified from 10 inches to infinity. The coated, glass lenses magnify without significant color fringing or defects. The case and strap are well made. Overall, it works well for what I wanted it to do: see detail I couldn't focus close up with my 68 year old eyes, I am very satisfied.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just for closeUp Even though this monocular is great at close distances it works great at 10'-15' in between fence boards. I read gas and electric meters for a local utility and the 10x is hard to steady when you just walked up a steep hill or in the middle of a 16 mile walk. The Carson 7x is small and easy to focus and not to hard to steady. The only downfall would be focusing at low light levels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very compact and lightweight. My primary reason for buying this is to have it in my pocket or backpack when hiking (is that a bear?). I give it a 5-star rating for a few reasons. It is very compact, very lightweight, and the optics are quite nice for such an affordable instrument. I also like the fact that it will focus so close, making it useful to read, for example, the fine print on any number of things. Of course it won't perform like much larger, heavier telescopes or binoculars, but considering the size/price, I think it's a great item.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well When I ordered this unit it was advertised on BH Photo as 7x18mm meaning 7x power and 18mm objective aperture. However, for whatever reason, Carson now only shows on its website a 6x18mm version implying the telescopic power has been reduced. Minimum focus of my particular unit is approximately 20" (versus the advertised 10"), but that is okay for me personally. The received unit otherwise does what is advertised/intended, but be warned that the field of view is ultimately quite narrow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good quality for the price While the image quality isn't quite as good as some of the more expensive monoculars, it's pretty close and it's certainly much better than anything in it's price range. It's pretty lightweight as well with good build quality. You really can't go wrong for the price.
