Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Overview

An ideal all-around lens, the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS from Canon is a 28.8-320mm equivalent zoom covering a versatile wide-angle to telephoto range. Using both aspherical and ultra-low dispersion elements, color fringing, chromatic aberrations, and spherical aberrations are well-controlled for a high degree of sharpness, color accuracy, and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast. Complementing the imaging capabilities is a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a DC Micro Motor autofocus system delivers quick focusing performance and a minimum focusing distance of 1.5' is available for close-up shooting.

All-in-one zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs, and offers a 28.8-320mm equivalent focal length range.
Two ultra-low dispersion elements are used to control color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to realize greater color accuracy and clarity.
Two aspherical elements are used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A DC Micro Motor autofocus system provides quick focusing performance and a dedicated AF/MF switch allows for quick switching between auto and manual focusing methods.
Rounded six-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Reviews

Meh ... disappointing, notwithstanding such promise

Unfortunately, this lens has and does it all ! It has a very long zoom range from 20mm to 200 mm, AND it provides plenty of lens flare, color aberration and color fringing, soft focus in the corners throughout much of the zoom range, excess carry weight, and sloppy zoom and glitchy focus mechanism. Yep, it has it ALL! My copy required repair at the Canon hospital. Of course your mileage may vary, but I was very disappointed in it. I much prefer and recommend the shorter range Canon 18-135 IS USM mm zoom lens which does a much better job. It is lighter weight and has much faster, smoother, more accurate auto focus. It is much sharper at all zoom focal lengths and is sharper focus in the corners at much lower and wider aperture settings, PLUS, it has far less color and lens aberration. While you give up some zoom range, you get much sharper, lower distortion, images in return, at lower cost. If you need a longer range telephoto zoom - get the Canon 70-300 mm IS USM - which is an even better bargain. The EF-s 18-200 IS mm is OK for general snap shooting and it makes for an OK all-purpose travel and family event lens, but I would never use it for serious memories or commercial work. Just MY take ... your mileage may vary. TT

Wife Loves this Lens

My wife's go to lens was the Canon 28-250 but found it was just a bit to bulky for her day to day. She shots everyday and often needs the lower range. This lens was the perfect replacement both in performance and weight. Flawless movement and the typical high quality features associated with Canon. Great everyday lens for the novice to pro.as well. Excellent in low light environment...Highly recommend and as always, service is well above par from B&H. No need to look anywhere else for your photo needs.

EF-S 18 - 200

I have had this lend since it was first introduced. I rarely use any other. I only have to carry one lens. True the lens creep can be aggravating, but the lock is there for a reason and has never failed. My only complaint is that Canon, instead of improving on this lens, stopped making it. Now you have to buy 2 and carry 2... I would love to see Canon make an 18 - 300 lens.

Love it!

Works very well fpr the work I do. As a bonus is a great travel lense. For those of us that are not able to spend the money on full frame equipment this lense works very well.

My Travel Companion Lens!

I purchased over 5 yrs. ago never had any issues takes Great Shots, never have to fumble around with different lenses especially when traveling. Never miss any shots due to the fact that my handy travel companion is always ready. When compared to having to carry 2 or more lenses on a trip it save space and weight.

Great Lens, one issue

I love this lens. Takes great pics and fits my every need. The only issue is the lens extends out when pointed down. You need to remember to lock the lens in place so this doesn't happen. It is kinda annoying so I'll have to get into the habit of locking the lens so it doesn't extend out when not in use. Minor issue overall and I still recommend this lens as a great all around lens.

Great lens for the price

question

Would this fit on a canon 6D camera?
Asked by: CARMEL S.
As fas as I know, not, this will not fit.I'm using a EOS Rebel T5i camera that can use either F or S lenses. Also thinking in change my camera to a 6D, but in that case I will need to buy another 18-200mm lense because will not be able to use current. That is sad, because I'm very pleased with this lense

which front lens cap is appropriate?
Asked by: Thomas M.
You can use several lens caps available. We would suggest the choice is between affordable Sensei 72mm Center Pinch Snap-On Lens Cap B&H # SELC72 or OEM Canon E-72 II 72mm Lens Cap B&H # CALC72Q.

question

I already have Canon 28-135 with my EOS 50D that I bought from B& H. What important feature do I get if I buy the 18-200? Also, how safe is it to buy the refurbished versus new?
Asked by: Anonymous
The main difference between the Canon 28-135mm lens and the Canon 18-200mm lens is the fact the 18-200mm lens would be wider on the Canon EOS 50D and would work better as an all-around lens compared to the 28-300mm lens, which was more-so designed for usage on Canon full-frame or film SLR cameras. Concerning refurbished cameras, the main difference between the two would be the warranty. Refurbished cameras are cameras that have been sent back to the manufacturer, inspected, and brought back to initial factory specifications. However, as they are not new, Canon does not include the full 1-Year warranty. While I have no issue with purchasing refurbished equipment (especially as I can test the equipment and ensure it is working using our standard 30-Day Return Policy), it would be up to your personal comfort level as to if you need a full warranty or if the refurbished warranty is okay for your usage needs.
