The 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA SSM Vario-Sonnar T* Lens from Sony is a professional-grade, bright zoom lens specifically designed for the Sony Alpha SLR series (also compatible with Minolta Maxxum series) DSLR cameras. Carl Zeiss' optical design and anti-flare T* (T-Star) coatings used for this lens help to reduce flare and to increase contrast, in addition to the aspherical, extra-low dispersion, and super extra-low dispersion glass elements.
When used with a digital SLR camera with an APS-C sized sensor, the equivalent 35mm focal length for this lens becomes 24-52.5mm. With its wide angle zoom range and its constant aperture of f/2.8, in conjunction with the Super SteadyShot image stabilization system of the Sony Alpha DSLR camera system, this lens will provide excellent results even when hand-holding the camera with available light.

More DetailsSony SAL-1635Z Overview
Aperture Range: f/2.8-22
With f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, up to a maximum of f/22, the high quality of this lens means you don't have to sacrifice aperture for higher focal lengths as some lenses do when zooming in.
Alpha & Minolta Maxxum DSLRs
This lens is for Sony A-mount full frame DSLRs but is also compatible with Sony Alpha APS-C size cameras. The lens covers a 2.2x zoom range from 16mm to 35mm, which is the 35mm equivalent of a 24-52.5mm lens when used on APS-C format cameras.
3x Aspherical Glass Lens Elements
These precision lens elements correct distortion for sharper, more visually accurate images across the entire zoom range of the lens.
Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) & Super Extra-Low Dispersion (Super ED) Glass Elements
To reduce chromatic aberrations, most noticeable when zoomed all the way in, the extra-low dispersion elements correct for certain wavelengths of light - producing sharper images with truer colors.
Super Sonic Wave Motor (SSM)
Designed for fast, smooth, silent automatic focusing, this unique technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. It operates through the ability of a piezoelectric device to reshape itself quickly when voltage is applied.
Carl Zeiss T* (T-Star) Coatings
Coated optics were pioneered by Carl Zeiss...and this superb lens features T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates the lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces.
9x Circular Aperture Blades
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded bokeh background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
Focus Hold Button
This lens is made with a Focus Mode switch and Focus Hold button, which offer better focus control whenever you need it. For reliable operation, Auto Clutch prevents the manual focus ring from rotating in auto-focus mode.

question
Is this lens compatible with the new Sony PXW-FS7 camera?
Yes, this lens is compatible with that camera. However, the new Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Lens might be a better choice for it has a servo motor built-in.

question
This is a follow up to the question asked about this lens being optimized for ASP-C cameras. The product description actually says This lens is for Sony A-mount full frame DSLRs but is also compatible with Sony Alpha APS-C size cameras. But your answer said lens will not create a large enough image to cover the entire frame so you will see black around the edges of the photo because it is a DT lens. But I don't see anything about this being a DT lens. Can you please clarify, is this a full frame camera lens? Thanks!
This lens can be used with both full frame and APS-C sized sensor cameras. This is a full frame lens that will give an angle of view of 16-35mm with a full frame sensor, and an angle of view of of 24-52.5mm when used with APS-C sized sensors. The previous reply was incorrect and has since been amended. We are sorry for any confusion it may have caused.

question
The specifications say this lens is Optimized for APS-C format; does that mean the image will be cropped when used on Full Frame digital and film cameras? I am very interested in this lens, but only if I can use it with my Minolta Maxxum 7 film camera and FF sensor Sony cams (I plan to get a Sony a99).
This is an amended reply to this question. It is possible on the date that the question was posted and replied to that information about this lens on this product link were inaccurate, (and seemingly has since been corrected) and thus or agents primary reply was inaccurate. I am sorry about any confusion that this may have caused. Currently there is not any part of this product link which states that this lens is optimized for APS-C cameras. To confirm, it is compatible both with full-frame as well as APS-C crop sensor cameras. It will give an angle of view of 16-35mm with a full frame sensor/film camera, and an angle of view of of 24-52.5mm when used with APS-C sized sensors.
