Vanguard SPIRIT ED 1042 overview

  • 1Description

The Vanguard 10x42 Spirit ED Binocular is their lightest roof prism model with fully multicoated ED glass lenses. The rubber armored housing comes in at an impressive 22.6 oz, but doesn't skimp at all upon the optics.  This is the choice for someone who values low weight and high optical quality over a more metal-based housing which weighs more but can be knocked around a bit.

Unlike a hunter's binocular, Vanguard has given the Spirit multicoatings which target the green color spectrum, for enhanced nature observation.  The waterproof and fogproof Spirit has moisture-dispersing external coatings which help to shed precipitation quickly.

As a 10x42, this Spirit binocular provides a high degree of magnification in a relatively compact device.  The 6° viewing angle is comfortably wide enough for distant scanning of shorebirds and unapproachable wildlife, and the eye relief of 16mm allows most users a view of the binocular's entire field.

Optical Performance
  • 10x magnification
  • 42mm objective lenses
  • BAK4 compact roof prisms
  • Extra low-dispersion (ED) glass elements reduces chromatic and spherical aberration to produce crisp and clear high-contrast images with accurate color representation across the entire field of view without distortion
  • V-Max anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics improves light transmission, color rendition, and contrast
  • Phase-correcting prism coatings reduces internal light diffraction to further improve contrast and overall image sharpness
  • Wide 60° apparent viewing angle
  • Comfortable 16mm eye relief
  • Wide 4.2mm exit pupil

    Vanguard SPIRIT ED 1042 reviews

10x42 Spirit ED Binocular (Black) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spirit ED - awesome! These binoculars are the first pair I have ever purchased and I am very impressed! At this price point they are an exceptional value and they suit the needs I have for camping, hunting, general use. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would recommend this highly for travel and regular use. I bought this for travel and it was lightweight and good at handling heavy lens 70-200mm F2.8 with DSLR. Very stable and easy to carry and setup.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not great I was convinced by the many positive reviews that the price point for these binoculars belied its exceptional optical quality. I wouldn't even say the quality of these binoculars is good. They are extremely average. Actually, the binoculars I received had pitting and uneven coating over the lenses. There is nothing that sets these binoculars apart from the droves of binoculars between the $75-150 price point, and all in all were a disappointment. I would not purchase them again if I had the option.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp, clear, bright, but some color edges I've never had good binoculars before, so it is difficult for me to compare. I'm very satisfied with the image quality, it is bright and sharp for both remote objects and Moon. The only thing I've noticed is very narrow, sometimes barely visible blue or green stripes at the edges. Color depends on focusing. May be this is common for binoculars of this type, I don't know. In any case I'm very satisfied with the binoculars, and would recommend it to anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unbelievable The only reason I am giving this 4 stars is because I haven't had the binocs long enough to rate thoroughly. First impression....unbelievably wonnderful! I paid more than I wanted to but I was tired of owning poor binocs. I can't believe the magnificaiton on clear and I can see so far away. I also like the sturdiness of the design. The carrying case is not really roomy enough but that is minor.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for I'm not sure where all the gushing reviews about the optical clarity are coming from. The clarity is very middle-of-the-road and the chromatic aberration is not unnoticeable. It's not terribly pricey, but given it's performance I don't think it represents good value for money. If I'd known the optical quality was this unimpressive though I probably would have opted for something at a higher price point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good glass for the money. The color and clarity is excellent. Focus is smooth and easy. Good brightness for dusk/dawn viewing. Build quality and warranty are great. I can scan for long periods without eyestrain. I was able get clear photos with my galaxy6 in part to having good eye relief. Like the weight, feel, and the comfortable neck strap. Great price and fast shipping from B&H. No cons to speak of...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from over all an awesome binocular 1st of all the magnification is just right for daily uses. I have compared with 8*42. This one is better. Optical quality is quite awesome, better than my old bushnell zoomable binocular and my EF70-200f4L. But just like all the optics, the optical quality vary a little with different batch. The only thing one can rely on will be their luck.
