    Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-950Q reviews

WinTV-HVR-955Q USB TV Tuner is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 71.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a fantastic product. I bought this because I get all my tv over the air. Recording a show necessitates using the dvd recorder, and it's getting old, and is not truly reliable. This tv tuner worked as soon as I plugged it into the usb port on my computer. I hooked up to the coaxial cable from my attic antenna, and I get a better picture than I do on my regular tv. It picked up all the channels and using it with Microsoft Media Center is easy as pie. I like Microsoft Media Center better than the software that came with the device, but that software works OK as well. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to cut the cable and still have a personal video recorder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised, and works well I use this for over the air reception. I do *not* use the WinTV software. I am using MythTV on a linux box. The only negatives I found about the product before I purchased were all about the software, and I knew I wouldn't use it. (So can't confirm either way.) My calculation paid off, because the hardware is working great. I get essentially the same reception through it to my linux laptop as I do on my Sony Bravia 54 TV. (Utilizing a roof mounted antenna, not the one that is included.. never even tried it.) Especially for the price, this was a great intro experience to PC based TV for me... and the USB interface is a wonderful solution for a laptop.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great solution, beautiful HD picture The device is remarkably small and unobtrusive and works quite well. Setup's straightforward: screw in coax input from local cable company, plug it in, install software and scan for channels. Picks up all the analog channels fine, as well as finding the Clear QAM unencrypted channels for the requisite local digital HD broadcast stations---and some unexpected Clear QAM HD channels, as well. The remote control is a bit flimsy and you often have to press a button multiple times before it registers ... but for the price it's hard to complain. HD picture is beautiful on my Dell Vostro laptop through HDMI cable to Epson 1080p projector.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from When it works, it works well. This tuner is small, discreet and easily set up. It includes an antenna which works well for some local TV stations that have strong broadcast wattage. I had downloaded updated drivers from the Hauppauge website, and after simply plugging the device into a USB port, I installed the drivers and applications without any problems. However, the stability of the WinTV 7 application is very bad. As I increment through channels using the '+' key on my keyboard, it works well sometimes and changes to the next channel without issue. Other times the screen goes black and then the Windows Application has stopped working dialog pops up and I must close the application. I have not been able to determine a pattern to the failures. Because of this instability, this is not a product that I can trust to reliably watch TV. In my opinion, this product is designed for very casual TV watching, and not as a main TV device. I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit with this TV tuner.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not very happy with the tuner The problem is I can't get local channels, which is the reason I wanted the tv tuner. I get messages that there is no signal on basic local channels such as KABC 7, 13, etc. - in Los Angeles using my zip code 90020. They advise attaching something to the roof antena; however, I don't know how to fix it to make it work. My television has very good reception using a roof antena for over 150 mile radius, but this tuner, which I wanted to use on my lap top computer to view live tv, can't do what I need it to do. It does get other channels, which is ok and they come in pretty clear; however, I did have to move the antena to get a good signal. It's a good antena; but it doesn't get the basic stations I want to view in my local area.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works Well It picks up all the channels from my cable provider even channels my box wont. The only drawback is that it does not pick them up on the channels provided by the cable company so using the DVR function is difficult. It will still record but it has to be done manually. The picture is clear and the remote works with no problems. It is what I was looking for and I would recommend this to anyone wanting to watch TV on their computer and the fact that it is USB makes it easier than opening the computer to install and usable on my laptop and desktop which makes it great for travel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Hardware - Disappointing Software This is the second external USB tuner I've used. I'm using it with my local cable company's free ClearQAM signal (attaching the cable company's cable directly into my computer without cable box). The nice thing is that the signal is clear and reliable. Unfortunately my Windows Media Center has mistaken CBS for NBC and there doesn't seem to be a thing in the world I can do about it (I've tried everything from manually adding the stations to using virtual or actual channel numbers... nothing works). That means I have to rely of the software which comes with the device in order to record NBC shows. But there doesn't appear to be any ability to schedule recordings... only record live as it is happening. So on that front it is disappointing. There is a program guide which simply opens a web page to channel listings but that is all. Good device but not ideal or that easy to use. I haven't tried it was an over the air antenna but the ClearQAM signal comes in like a champ. I have contacted Hauppauge with no response so far.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Answers the Mail The Good: Super clear HDTV signal via QAM. Painless installation. DVR features are a nice plus. The Bad: Remote control is worthless; requires direct line-of-site and has a range of 5 feet. The Ugly: The software is horrible. Crashes periodically, especially when switching between monitors. Aesthetically unappealing, unintuitive UX.
