ZEISS Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 Reviews

Chromatic ABOMINATION & VERY SOFT

I can not believe Zeiss can put their name on that. I have some first gen rokinon's primes that ate sharper and shows significantly less CA than this lens at the same aperture. Lenses I bought nearly 10 years ago for less than 400$ each. I have to return this Zeiss and will lose money over custom and shipping. This is an absolute disaster. Ah and the T* Coating is a joke on this product the flare is ugly at best and not well managed at all. Paying this much for a lens that render nice images at f4 or higher is nothing less than a disgrace toped with a giant ripoff. DO NOT EVER EVER EVEN CONSIDER BUYING THIS USELESS PIECE OF GARBAGE.

as expected

Pretty much what you'd expect from a 50mm Planar. - Fits nicely into my Nikon D610. The aperture is controlled by the assigned wheel, as with native lenses. You do focus manually. - The hood fit over/outside the suggested Zeiss UV filter - As someone mentioned, the Nikon 67mm cap fits perfectly over the hood. The cap that came with the lens fits over the UV filter, inside the hood, reasonably easy to use with the hood. Optically, exactly as expected. Nice portrait lens at open aperture, very sharp half-closed. Interestingly, made in Japan, not Germany as one would expect.

Cap for Hood

This is truly a wonderful lens. Old school build quality that will last forever. Being a manual focus lens there is no auto focus to fail, no auto focus to adjust. There is simply a silky smooth ring to turn. With a little care you can enjoy that same precision 50 years from now, long after the autofocus lenses have bit the dust. One nice thing I discovered is that a Nikon 72mm LC-72 lens cap will fit the hood perfectly. This allows me to leave the hood on at all times and still have the benefit of a cap. Call it a hood cap instead of a lens cap. Whatever you call it, I think you'll like it. See the attached picture to see how it looks on my D3X.

I use on my Nikon Z6 via FTZ adapter. This ZF.2 version communicates with the camera and able to set f-stop from body, and also transfers EXIF data. All my other my Nikon AI-S lenses don’t. Mechanical quality is top notch, but optical quality is moderate only. Need to stop down to f4 to f5.6 to get maximum sharpness. If you enjoy using manual lens, this is the one to go.

Very very unique, challenging lense if you are ready to step into the manual focus game. Built like a tank. All metal, including the lens hood. Has electronic camera connection, so you can use with MF guide of your camera if you are into. The sharpest results comes up anywhere between f/5 and f/8 as you may guess. Wider apertures brings soft results (especially around f/2.2 and wider.) I also observed a slight chromatic abbreviation on green side. If you like contrast forward photos without retouching, this would be the one.

This lens, when the focus is obtained, gives some very sharp pictures and have a very pleasing bokeh. This is my first, well, second manual focus lens, the other was a cine lens which I quickly sold. I wear glasses so autofocus is my thing. The pictures are sharp and crisp. I am loving them. And it is built like a tank would good weight. I pair it with my Canon R6 and they work so well together.
