Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Reviews

An excellent lens held back by AF issues.

Overall this lens didn't meet my expectations. My assessments are all done on a focus calibrated D810. Wide open contrast is average and sharpness is below average, both improve quickly when stopping down. Focus is the biggest disappointment, it's a little slow but it's not accurate at all - it tends to back focus if the subject is closer than 3 meters. I've seen this behavior with other fast Nikon primes and I believe the reason has to do with bokeh characteristics and how the AF sensor judges when something is in focus - the bokeh transition on this lens is so gradual and smooth the AF sensor misses. Bokeh on this lens is really nice for portraits and would be a top reason to have it. Overall if you don't mind working with this lens to get great results then you may like it, however if you're looking for something that just works the cheaper f/1.8 50mm is fantastic.

Wicked Awesome.

Still A Great Lens

Checking photo gallery websites sites, you can still find this lens being used on high end current Nikon cameras, as well as the historical ones. From DSLRs (like D700) thru mirro-less bodies like Z6, Z7 - the output looks great across the spectrum. If you're on the fence about this one, just buy it. It's quite nice and holding its own against the third party manufacturers. I really appreciate the prompt service from BH Photo!

Very nice bokeh

I've been using this lens on my D750, and the Depth of Field is really great. I do notice that sometimes I need to step down a bit to retain sharp focus in certain circumstances, but wow...a really nice sharp lens.

I have had to transition into doing my own instructional videos. I use this lens with my Nikon D7200 camera to produce the videos. The lense shoots through a teleprompter to produce professional quality videos (well...almost!). I plan on using the lense with the Nikon for RAW photography in the future.

Satisfied for price

I am impressed with this lens for its price. It is not full five star because I'm honestly not completely satisfied with it. I often find that it never focuses (when I select a certain focus point, that point is never quite clear or actually in-focus.) Additionally, there is a green and purple haze around objects in some photos. I am not sure if this is faulty or supposed to happen... but I love the bokeh and that makes it worth it! Wish I could give it a 3.75 rating.

question

Will this lens work on the D5000 and the D7100
Asked by: Anonymous
The Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4G lens is fully compatible with every Nikon DSLR and any Nikon SLR that has the ability to control aperture through the cameras body. That being said, this lens is fully compatible with both the D5000 and D7100.

question

What are the aperture stops on this lens. I own a 1.8D the stops are 1.8, 2.0 2.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.2, 3.5, 4, 4.5... I not need past this point?
Asked by: Anonymous
This lens does not have a manual aperture ring. So the stops are controlled by your camera body and not the lens beyond the minimum and maximum aperture. Very few Nikon lenses include an aperture ring any more and in the case of the ones that do, they will cause an error condition in the camera if they are not set to their minimum aperture.

Hi I’m looking for wide angle f nikor lens for architecture and street photography, my body is D 810
Asked by: Mira
I use the 35mm focal length for reportage type shots, but have the AF-S 24mm f/1.8 G for landscape and architecture. Many would opt for either 24mm or the 20mm f/1.8G. Another great, sharp lens you might consider, is the AF-S 18-35mm VR lens from Nikon's current lineup. Of the lenses mentioned above, however, the 24mm f/1.8G resolves VERY well and is really hard to beat for the fine details.
