There are several reviews that state this lens ...

There are several reviews that state this lens focuses slowly, that it is soft at wide apertures, and has poor low light performance. Then there are others that say the opposite... Which is the truth? Or is it a matter of poor quality control that is leading to various performance problems? Or just people not twisting knobds and pushing buttons right? Thanks in advance!
Asked by: Charles
As with most reviews, user experience is subjective and relative to the performance metrics of other lenses. As far as OEM lenses go, the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G is a great performer for the price point, mostly outperformed only by more expensive lenses but in other focal lengths. A great alternative/upgrade to this would be the Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4, which is also larger.

Which lens produces sharper, higher quality ...

Which lens produces sharper, higher quality images, this one or the 50mm 1.4D AF? What's the difference between these two lenses?
Asked by: Mckay
The 1.4D is the older lens and I dont think there is a "AF" version. It was originally made for the old film cameras that doesnt rely on the AF. Now, Nikon has designed their DSLRs to work with any of their old F mount lenses, but it doesn't mean that AF will work. The build quality between the 1.4D and the 1.4G is quite different also and apparent once you pick up the kens. As far as "sharper or higher quality images" I dont think there's much of a difference, but if youre depending on AF (in which if youre shooting anything other than film cameras you should be), I'd spend the extra money and get the 1.4G rather than the 1.4D if I were you. If youre looking to go into the the mirror less line, I believe they make a 50mm in the z mount.
