Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Overview

  • 1Description

Pairing a normal field of view with an especially bright design, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G is a versatile prime, well-suited for a wide range of subject matter. Characterized by its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is adept in difficult lighting conditions and also excels at isolating subjects using selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques. A Super Integrated Coating enhances contrast and color accuracy by reducing flare and ghosting, and the rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes a smooth, pleasing bokeh quality. Additionally, a Silent Wave Motor provides fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Normal-length prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for achieving selective focus effects and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
Super Integrated Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Reviews

    AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 1433.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Back to basics I wanted to get back to where I began. Then it was a Canon A1 and 50mm 1.8. I went to the dark side and Nikon when Canon went to a new lens mount and we fell out! That was then and this is now, Canon still make great products but I will stick with Nikon and for the first time in years I have a prime, pin sharp, 50mm and a whole new relearning curve. I used to favor the 35mm prime for it extra width now I chose to walk a little if needed! Great for general use. All internal focus and did I say pin sharp. This will be my go to light weight lens. I got lazy with the great 24-300mm. Now I will get back to basics and creation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens! I owned the 50mm 1.8, years ago. It was great for the price but I never loved it. So I never thought about purchasing the 1.4 version. After switching to the full frame of the D700, I decided to give the 50mm another look. I purchased the 50mm 1.4 G version just before leaving for a 10 day Disney trip. This lens stayed on my D700 the whole time. I wanted something lightweight but something I could open way up on and not have to worry about losing a $1500+ lens should something happen to it. I've since used the lens for studio & outdoor portraits and also at a few weddings. It doesn't disappoint!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite Lens The Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S has become my favorite lens and is on my camera (Nikon D3) 98% of the time! Unless I need to dig in my camera bag for a super wide (Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8), or medium range (Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8) or even to get super-close (Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8) I can and do make excellent use of the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G it's fast, sharp, great contrast, color it does it all and very well it has helped my photography in so many ways! Now, I move, get new angles and not rely on the zoom features of a non-prime lens. I honestly can't say enough great things about this lens!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite lens This lens is everything I had hoped for and more. In an age where camera sensors are rapidly illuminating the deficiencies in our lenses - this lens passes every test you can throw at it. Fast focusing - check. Great wide open - check. Beautiful bokeh (and I mean REALLY beautiful) - check. There is one thing I don't like about this lens, and I hate to give it a ding. I hate myself for having waited so long to get it. It really is one of the best lenses I've ever used. Regardless of what you are using it for - this lens will shine. Pop this lens on, head out for a day or night of shooting and come hope happy. Don't wait - get it - now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing like a razor sharp Nifty Fifty I am a freelance portrait and event photographer. The Nikkor 50mm 1.4G is incredibly sharp throughout. Of course wide open at 1.4 you need to be very careful as your depth of field is so thin. I think many experience softness b/c of poor technique and not so much b/c of the lens itself. I'm a huge fan. I had the 50mm 1.8D and recently upgraded and I'm very glad that I did, even though the 50mm 1.8D was also great, especially for what it cost. Definitely recommend this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and Fast, absolutely amazing lens I am blown away by this lens' sharp image, especially operating under difficult low light conditions, it's fast, accurate and sharp!! The image quality are excellent. I mostly use it for portraits, love it's soft, natural blur bokeh background in the pictures that really make your subject really standing out. I used to use it with my Nikon DX body (it actually became 75mm prime lens, so, sometimes it's a bit difficult to frame and composite in a confined indoor space, nevertheless, the images it produced are still outstanding.) But recently, I bought the Nikon D4, with the FX full frame format, this 50mm lens finally release its full potential and the excellent images it produced just blow me away!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value I gave this 5 stars because for the money it is hard to beat. It has nice bokeh, handles glare well and is extremely low on any type of distortion. It clearly is a step up on sharpness from my old 1.4 50D However, As is the case with every small FL lens with built in motor. I wish they could make the autofocus as snappy as my 70-200 F2.8 Nikkor. To me , ANY lens with a built in motor should be able to beat the socks off the camera body on a straight D type lens. Even if that camera body is a D3 heritage. Clearly that is the exception rather than the rule. I guess it is just a lot harder to do with a wider angle lens. Slower AF aside this Lens is worth the rather modest sum.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again and again I use this product with my full frame DSLR all the time. Having started as a photographer 40 years ago this lens is magnificent. It is sharp, fast, light weight and small. I keep it on my camera where it fits in my most often used single camera and lens shoulder bag. I alernate it's use between FX and DX and I love it. It's a fast 50 and 75. I use it for general purpose street work as well as portraits. It's such a great lens and I love the aperture on the camera body interface. The price to value relationship is unbeatable. I recommend it to all image makers as the best general purpose lens available. This is a must have lens.

    question

    What are the aperture stops on this lens. I own a 1.8D the stops are 1.8, 2.0 2.2, 2.5, 2.8, 3.2, 3.5, 4, 4.5... I not need past this point?
    Asked by: Anonymous
This lens does not have a manual aperture ring. So the stops are controlled by your camera body and not the lens beyond the minimum and maximum aperture. Very few Nikon lenses include an aperture ring any more and in the case of the ones that do, they will cause an error condition in the camera if they are not set to their minimum aperture.

    question

Is this lens good for portraits? Is it good for bringing the subject(s) into focus and blurring the background? I need a lens that is perfect for portraiture.
    Asked by: Anonymous
While I personally prefer a lens between 85mm to 135mm for portraiture needs, if you are using the lens on a camera that has an APS-C sensor, then yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens would work for your needs.
