Leica Summilux-M 21mm f/1.4 ASPH. Overview

An impressively wide and fast lens, the Summilux-M 21mm f/1.4 ASPH. from Leica is a versatile M-mount prime delivering exceptional image quality. The super wide-angle focal length is complemented by the use of five anomalous partial dispersion and a pair of aspherical elements to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations in order to deliver a high degree of sharpness and clarity with well-controlled vignetting and distortion. The optical design also incorporates a floating elements system to provide consistent image quality throughout the focusing range.

Super wide-angle prime features a bright, fast f/1.4 maximum aperture to benefit working in low-light conditions and for greater control over depth of field.
Five anomalous partial dispersion elements reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity as well as consistent, even illumination and well-corrected vignetting.
Two aspherical elements suppress spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness.
Floating elements system achieves consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, even at the minimum focusing distance of 2.3'.
The front of the lens is male threaded to accept the included lens hood and the hood is designed to accept Series 8 filters.

Fantastic wide angle Leica glass

I have had the Summilux-M-21mm for about a year. I use it on both my M246 and M10-R. Incredible low light quality, in particular with the 246. I do not use the Brightline finder with this lens. I can easily focus manually without the help of the adapter. Awesome lens.

The 21 mm 1.r. is carried in my bag at all times for low-light photography along with the 50 mm .95. Both are outstanding. Amazing performance is available both indoors and out. Outrageously expensive, but not regrets. Bit heavy, but the quality of this lens is superb! No regrets. Save the money if you're a Leica fiend. You won't regret spending the dough. Taken superb photos of with this camera of the ocean at dusk and well after, camp fires. Taken pictures of Santa Clause in very low-light situations and babies crawling in suitcases of toys very low-light situations at Santa's feet. Will work in churches, synagogues, mosques, and even inside caves with a little light. Highly recommended.

Georgeuos lens optically!!

I gave this lens 5 stars, optically it deserves it, this lens performs beautifully and balances nicely on any M body. It is sligtly heavier than most Leica lenses but small for a FF 21mm. Unfortunately Leica has handicapped this lens with regard to filters. The lens hood takes Series 8 filters, a drop-in filter that doesn't need threading but is otherwise a poor choice. Series 8 is difficult to find, except for uv/nd/pol. The solution according to Leica is an adapter that takes 82mm filters. Availability is greater than Series 8 but not readily available. The hood no longer works with the adapter in place subjecting the image to greater flare. Btw- the 82mm adapter can take 77mm filters without vignetting using a step down ring. Unfortunately filter use is only done with great difficulty and extra care is needed for the slightly protruding lens. So, why did I write so much about the filters and then rate the lens five stars? The lens is a phenomenal performer and well worth the extra effort.

Unmatched quality

I'm fairly new to photoghraphy, but I like to spoil myself with good gear. I bought the M9 and just love everything about that camera. This lens is an absolute beauty. The best color rendition, crystal clear corner to corner. Vignetting is heavy from wide open to around f4 and then disappears completely at around f5.6 from what I can tell so far. I'm still learning where that cut-off is for the heavy vignetting. The build quality is second to none. Focus ring is a bit tight and requires a deliberate touch but I like that quality. I am continually awed by the quality of the images when I get back to the computer. Very sharp throughout all f-stops. If this fits your budget you won't be dissapointed. This is the best super wide angle I have ever used.

I’ve owned it for over a year and used it with my M10. The results are all that you’d expect from Leica optics. If you want wide and fast, this is it.

Most thoroughly corrected wide lens

It gives confidence to handle all lighting situations. The CA correction is done well and the optical aberrations are also well controlled. No complaints whatsoever.

question

Can this fit on a Ef mount or a Nikon D800 camera? What format is this lense for?
Asked by: Anonymous
The 21mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Aspherical Manual Focus Lens has the M-Mount. It would not be compatible with Nikon or Canon DSLRs. It is compatible with Leica, Voigtlander, and Zeiss M-mount rangefinders.

How can I install the filter? Under the hood?

How can I install the filter? Under the hood?
Asked by: A
Yes. There is room under the hood for a special series filter which is made by Leica. It is not threaded but just sits in the space.

question

This is made to attach to the Leica M7 TTL .72?
Asked by: Beverley G.
I don't know about the m7 i have it on the m9 240. it is wider than the range finder - so you need to get the OVD great lense, very sharp and very fast.

question

What size should be the filter(s) to be used with this lens ?
Asked by: Denis L.
You can find the Series 8 filters on BH by searching for ND filters and then scrolling down to the bottom of the filter size list. They are at the bottom of the list. I use the 0.9 (three stop) filter. The reason for the special filter is that they sit behind the lens hood and are not screwed on. There is a slight noise (do to movement of the filter) which is normal. With the M (240), you can leave the filter on and simply switch between ISO 200 for outdoor photos in daylight and ISO 3200 for evening or indoor photos. (Kudos to Thorsten Overgaard!)
