Was too heavy for my needs. Construction seemed ok. Did not like the quick release mechanism.

Great Ball Head

I love this ball head. The ball is very large and measures well over 1.5 inches in diameter making it easy to make fine adjustments. It has a very smooth ball giving it a good smooth movement. It would be nice to have a small bubble level mounted on the quick release base. I also use the quick release plate from the small BH2 bullhead on this head also.

solid head, very affordable

This is a great ball head for the price. Yes, you can get better for much more, but you can't beat the quality for this price. The head is very heavy and feels solid. It's fluid and durable. Great ball head!!

8 out of 10....

The BH5 head is both well machined and well made. It operates very consistently and smoothly, like heads that cost much more. I would recommend the head to anyone in the market based on quality of construction and design. I rated it in the headline as 8 out of 10 obviously for two shortcomings. The first being that you will need a coin or screwdriver to attach the base plate to your camera. Not a big deal but the mounting screw design could/should have been designed to avoid this, in my humble opinion. My second quirk is the knob to tighten the plate assembly on to the head once its attached to the camera bottom. Distance to the bottom of the camera base once its mounted is minimal which makes finger space a premium to get this done. A bit further complicated by a round rather small knob with which to do this with. Again the ergonomics of the tightening end are a bit tough based on shape. Square ( or rectangular or oval etc) knobs would have even been better. BUT a nice head thats works well in the field. Great value.

Amazing Tripod head

I bought this head to allow me to change the position easily with the ball head. And the main knob is big so you don't hurt your fingers trying to tighten it. The ball is huge and rated to support 26 lbs. which was important for me to keep my D7000 steady while in portrait position. And I do confirm the ball head does not move at all even if I shake it on purpose. I have found in practice you need a way higher support rating than just close to your camera gear's weight. The arca-type quick release tightens very good and prevents any wiggle as opposed to other plates i've used that have a clip. The construction is very solid and I am very happy with the BH5 !!!

Seems OK

Ballhead is very sturdy for my EOS 6d. Ball rotation was a bit rough at first but seems OK in use. I worry that the adjustment knobs will come out during hiking since they have no stops to keep them from coming uscrewed. This was the problem with my old ballhead which necessitated buying this one.

Not for use with Kirl L-Brackets

I bought this head for use with a Kirk L-Bracket for my Nikon D7100. When the head arrived, I found that the bracket clamp would not open wide enough to admit the Kirk L-Bracket. It opened only about 1 mm to allow the Smith-Victor plate to slide out. I returned this ball head after talking to B&H consultants believing that it must have been a faulty head. When the replacement arrived, I found that it, too, will not accept the Kirk L-Bracket. It does open slightly wider but it wont open wide enough to allow the L-Bracket to enter. The head appears to me to be well designed and has features that I like. Unfortunately, it does not meet my primary demand of accepting the Kirk L-Bracket. If it would do that, I would be extremely pleased. I must now find another option.
