The Tamron SP AF17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 26-78mm in 35mm format.

This lens offers an f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, to ensure stress-free photographic shots at all focal lengths and distances. Additionally, a broader photographic expression through the use of faster shutter speeds as a result of the maximum aperture offers enhanced photographic pleasure.

Note: Di-II lenses cannot be used with digital SLR cameras using image sensors that are larger than that of an APS-C size imager (e.g. 1D series), or with 35mm film SLR cameras.

Optimized for Digital SLR
The use of XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass optimizes the overall distribution of optical power, and also reduces various aberrations to the absolute minimum while achieving remarkable compactness. In addition, suitable positioning of two hybrid aspherical elements serves to maintain imaging performance and to shorten and compress the entire optical system.
LD Glass
An LD (Low Dispersion) glass element is used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor for enhancing optical quality in digital photography, in order to achieve outstanding optical performance over the entire zoom range.
Enhanced Peripheral Illumination
Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras, so images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery.
Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting and Flare
By employing "Internal Surface Coatings" (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting and flare due to the reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum.
Zoom Lock Mechanism
The Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel extension when carrying the lens/camera combination.

17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Lens for Canon Digital is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 354.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shining example of an inexpensive lens The constant f/2.8 throughout the zoom range is convenient, but this lens really shines stopped down a little. When this lens nails focus (which it does 99% of the time), it's results are as sharp as photos taken with my Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L lens. When you're shooting movies, manual focus is smooth and the lens does not click or make any noise, which is quite nice. I bought mine used for $350 and I've never regretted its purchase. I shoot with the Canon 7D. With the 70-200 mentionned above and the Tamron 17-50 I have a setup that I feel confident shooting with whether it be sports or portraiture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent walk-around, constant f/2.8 This lens does not seem to get the credit it deserves. It is very sharp, especially at f/4 and smaller apertures. It peaks at around 35mm f/5.6 where it is extremely sharp edge to edge. Color rendition is excellent. Autofocus is quick, partly because it is only 45 degrees from close focus to infinity manual focus is difficult for that reason. Like all lenses, autofocus does hunt in low light or when the focus point is on an area of low or no contrast, nothing new here. Auto-focus is a camera-and-lens task, so can't blame only the lens (I am using a Canon XTi 400D). Build quality is excellent. I am very happy with this lens. It is a keeper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excelent acquicition, worths every penny I just recently bought this lens, after a long list of products that i read about, i decided buying this Tamron. This fast lens has a very good contrast quality, a relatively fast focus, and a slightly noisy focus engine, low chromatic aberration. I use this lenses for Portraits, Architecture, Landscape, Concerts, etc. so, this Tamron is becoming the 80% time use on my Canon 40D. As all Tamron lenses, it comes with hood, something that Canon should have too. I am really satisfied with the quality, i can say that i will continue buying Tamron lenses, my future baby may be the Tamron 70-200 f2.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow My first choice would have been the 24-70 but on a non full frame camera that would have been a bit narrow even at 24. The canon 16-55 is expensive for its narrow zoom range and a friend recommended the Tamron to me. I used to never even consider aftermarket lenses but now that I've used the Tamron I may change my mind about that. To be fair it's light, doesn't seem well made, is relatively loud, and doesn't look very professional. But, the quality and sharpness of its pictures is on par with any other f/2.8 in canon's lineup.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great walk around lens This lens is just amazing at 17mm. No matter if open all the way to 2.8 or closed at 7.1 and more, it will reproduce sharp images and beautiful dynamic colors. On the other side, I thought this Tamron could be used for portraits at 50mm and come close to Canon 50mm 1.8 Ii, but I got disappointed. Colors are not so vivid and bokeh is not as pretty as on Canon. Built is OK, doesn't look cheap but doesn't look strong either. Plus, focus noise is loud, and that helps with impression that it's cheap lens. But image quality is what counts. I have it for a couple weeks so far and in general, I'm happy with choice I made between this lens and Canon's 17-40mm.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! I purchased this lens with high expectations, but after using it for less than 4 months the zoom ring gradually began tightening up on me while in the middle of a wedding ceremony. Once at the reception site, the zoom ring jammed completely. As I tried to adjust it the ring it then loosened up, and now it rotates freely but doesn't actually do anything at all. I sent it to Tamron as it supposedly comes with a 6-year warranty, and they wrote me back saying it was going to cost US$325.13 to repair - nearly the price of the lens! I will never purchase or recommend a Tamron lens again!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great recommendation This is a great every day lens. I wasn't sure which lens to go with for every day use. I had it narrowed down to two or three lenses. I used the B&H online chat and went with it. I also read the reviews to help me decide. I was a little hesitant going with a Tamron. I've only used Canon and Sigma lenses before. It's focusing is reversed from the Canon and Sigma lenses but that is an easy adjustment on my part. It is a little noisy but I don't typically shoot in places that require silence. It takes crisp and clear pictures. I use a filter on it and don't have to hardly do any color adjustments in Photoshop.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens The best lens for the price. I had narrowed my choices to the Tamron or the 17-40L and I'm so far pleased with my decision. I saved $300 and from comparing samples taken from both lenses on my 40D, I would have to say the Tamron is sharper. The build quality of the Canon is superior, but the Tamron is quite good too and I don't treat my lenses rough anyway. I've taken hundreds of shots in all situations and am always pleased by the sharpness and low light performance. Anyone looking for a wide angle lens with a constant 2.8 should really give this lens a look as it is in my opinion the best in its class.
