Vixen Optics VMC95L overview

  • 1Description

Vixen Optics assembled the ideal grab-and-go observation platform by combining their Mini Porta alt-azimuth mount with the VMC95L 95mm f/11 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope. With this kit you get the powerful and portable optical tube assembly that is optimized for observation and imaging, the easy to transport mount and tripod, plus an eyepiece and a red-dot finder.

  • VMC95L 95mm f/11 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope (OTA Only)

Lightweight, portable, and powerful, the Vixen Optics VMC95L 95mm f/11 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope is an ideal choice for observation or imaging. It features an internal flip-mirror mechanism that allows the light path to be directed toward one of two points: 90° upward or straight through. This configuration supports the use of two eyepieces for quickly changing magnification without having to switch eyepieces, or of an eyepiece at the 90° position and an imaging system straight through. For imaging, simply flip the mirror up to check alignment and tracking accuracy between exposures and flip it back down to use the camera. The straight-through port has threads that accept most imaging and camera mounting rings for eyepiece projection, prime-focus, and afocal imaging techniques.

Optically, the Maksutov design exchanges the conventional front corrector plate of a Schmidt with a convex meniscus lens, resulting in a smaller secondary mirror that limits obstruction and increases contrast while eliminating the need for periodic collimation. The Maksutov optical path results in a narrower field of view versus a similar Schmidt, but the optical benefits, when coupled with the VMC95L's larger aperture and multi-coated optics, make this an ideal scope for solar, lunar, and planetary observations, while being able to resolve bright deep-sky objects like stars, clusters, galaxies, and nebulae.

This version of the VMC95L is offered here without a mount or tripod, for users who have a reliable support system, but a Vixen-style dovetail plate is included to accommodate a variety of mounts. For observations, a 25mm eyepiece is included, as is a red-dot finderscope and bracket.

    Optical Tube Assembly
    • 95mm aperture
    • f/11 focal ratio
    • 1050mm focal length
    • Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design
    • Front convex meniscus lens corrects spherical and chromatic aberrations and comas (off-axis aberrations) across the entire field of view
    • Smaller secondary mirror versus Schmidt-Cassegrain reduces obstructions and increases contrast
    • Curved-vane secondary mirror mounting "spider" reduces diffraction to improve resolution
    • Multi-coated optics maximize light transmission to improve brightness, color rendition, sharpness, and contrast
    • Resolution: 1.22 arcsec
    • Internal focusing mechanism
    • Dual 1.25" eyepiece holders: First set at 90° and second straight through
    • Internal flip mirror allows easy switch between light paths for the use of two eyepieces or eyepiece/imaging combination
    • Able to perform various astrophotography techniques including eyepiece projection, prime-focus, and afocal imaging
    • When imaging, quickly flip mirror to check tracking between exposures without unmounting imaging rig
    • 42mm threads on the straight-through light path enable direct connection of accessories and imaging systems
    • Optical tube assembly only; mount and tripod required for proper use
    • Vixen-style dovetail plate
    • Weight: 4 pounds
    Included Accessories

    • 1.25" barrel diameter
    • Accepts most astronomical filters
    • 25mm eyepiece produces 42x magnification

    • Unmagnified view ensures an ultra-wide angle of view for easier alignment and faster star-hopping navigation
    • Simple red aiming dot won't obscure small or dim objects
    • Adjustable brightness prevents interfering with night-adjusted vision
    • Mounting bracket included
  • Mini Porta Manual AZ Mount with Tripod

Support your smaller optical tube assembly (OTA) with the highly portable and lightweight Vixen Optics Mini Porta Manual AZ Mount. Built with an adjustable-tension friction-control system, there are no clumsy axis locks or clutches to manipulate, so the mount can be easily moved by hand for fast navigation. For more precise movement, the mount has dual-axis slow-motion knobs that allow for easy and smooth tracking. The mount comes with an aluminum tripod that adjusts from 28 to 50" to accommodate a wide variety of users and viewing positions, with a center tray that adds stability to the legs while offering a place for eyepieces, filters, and other accessories. Weighing just 6 pounds including the tripod, but with a payload capacity of 8 pounds, this mount is ideal for smaller OTAs less than 4.7" (11.9cm) in diameter.

    • Manual alt-azimuth design
    • Dual-axis slow-motion control knobs allow for precision adjustments and tracking with less vibrations
    • Smooth 360° rotation on both axes
    • Friction-control system: No locks or clutches for fast and easy manual hand adjustments
    • Friction-resistant adjustment tools included for precise balancing and smooth movement
    • Vixen-style dovetail saddle
    • Use of optical tube diameters of less than 4.7" (11.9cm) recommended
    • 8-pound (3.6kg) payload capacity
    • Aluminum legs
    • Two leg sections each
    • Adjustable height from 28 to 50"
    • Spiked feet provide additional stability on rough or soft ground
    • Large thumbscrew leg locks are easy to use even while wearing gloves
    • Center tray adds stability while offering a place to hold accessories
    • Use of optical tube diameters of less than 4.7" (11.9cm) recommended

Vixen Optics VMC95L reviews

VMC95L 95mm f/11 Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope with Mini Porta Mount is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Scope's great. Rest of the kit isn't. For it's price and size, I'm impressed with the crisp optics of the scope and the light weight of the tripod. I was not so impressed with the rest of the kit. The Mini Porta-Mount's altazimuth knobs fall off easily and the worm gears stick. The red-dot finder's base can't be secured properly, while its fine-tuning screws are stiff and unresponsive. Overall, I would recommend the scope, but not the kit.
