Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Blending a favored wide-angle focal length with a bright maximum aperture, the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM is a Canon L-series lens characterized by a robust physical construction and sophisticated optical design. Two ultra-low dispersion elements help to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing while a pair of aspherical elements reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and clarity. Additionally, this lens sports a ring-type USM for quick and quiet autofocus performance and full-time manual focus override, and an internal floating focus mechanism also helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range.

Wide-angle prime 24mm f/1.4 lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture greatly benefits working in low-light conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field.
Two ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements are used to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Floating internal focusing mechanism helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 9.8" to infinity.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.

Shooting a wide angle lens at a wide aperture gives you a very unique look. The image quality on this lens is amazing, even wide open. I have used this lens on the 5D series and the R5 (w/adapter) and I would highly recommend it.

I've only had this lens for a short amount of time and have yet been able to challenge it as I want. Soon I will be going to Costa Rica- this is why I purchased it. So, I'll be back in touch with a better review and photos!

I got this as a hand-me-down from my buddy who just upgraded all his equipment. This lens is over 8 years, FOCUS is incredible, SHARPNESS is amazing, Super recommend this lens. Using it on a Canon R & R3.

Theres a magical creamy quality to this lens that I can not get on my other Canon lenses. The wide angle forces you to study your frame and work a bit harder, the results are stunning. My favorite lens for shooting humans and landscapes. A must own.

Not for astrophotography - expected a lot more at that price

I missed other reviews of this lens before I bought it for astrophotography. That was an expensive mistake. This lens has serious coma on the sides as many others have noted. Shooting at f4 or smaller helps, but that defeats the purpose of buying a fast lens. For the price I expected much more. For other uses it seems like a good lens, but for my purpose I am looking at Samyang/Rokinon and hope I get a good copy on the first try.

Auto Focus Flop

I bought 2 copies and both have auto-focus problems. My other L lenses have zero problems. The 24mm lens is definitely disappointing.
