Canon 3357B001 Overview

This Eg series Super Precision Matte Eg-S Interchangeable Focusing Screen from Canon provides easier manual focusing through your viewfinder on subjects in low light when using lenses with a wide aperture between f/1.8 to f/2.8.

This "S" type focusing screen works by decreasing the focus of the slightly out-of-focus areas around your in-focus subject for a sharper contrast.

Compatible with Canon EOS 5D Mk II and 6D
Not recommended for ordinary zoom lenses with maximum aperture slower than f/2.8 as the screen will appear dark and grainy
Focusing screens are delicate and should only be handled using the included gripping tool for installation

Canon 3357B001 Reviews

Does exactly what it should.

This is just what it claims, a precision matte screen that enables fast and precise manual focus with fast lenses on a 5D2 or 6D1. I've had this in my 6D for years and just added a second 6D body and of course this screen was the first upgrade. With this screen installed the original 6D is, in my opinion, the best DSLR from any brand for manual focus, either using fast EF lenses or adapted manual focus lenses.

Another great Canon and B&H Product!

The Canon super precision Matte Eg-S interchangeable focusing screen is absolutely crucial for astrophotographers!

An unnecessary option

I installed this screen in my Canon 6D camera anticipating the purchase of a Zeiss lens without auto-focus. I simply did not see an improvement in precise manual focus. I also learned that the Canon 6D Mark II does not allow user exchange of focusing screens. I have since purchased a Canon EOS R camera. If you are looking for precise manual focusing, the EOS R is the camera with the best manual focusing aids yet.

Prime time

This screen is a must have if your using Zeiss prime lenses. I use one in a a 6D. Manual focusing is so much faster and more accurate. Not perfect, but almost as good as the old daze - this is as close as you can get for an OVF.

Difficult to know exactly what difference it is going to mak

Seems better than the original but the difference is not huge

Definitely worth the modest price

This focus screen was recommended to me by a friend in the field and I went ahead and purchased it because the price was reasonable and I tend only to use lenses with wide aps. I've found it's helped me focus more accurately on all my lenses and it was ridiculously easy to install.

Works as expected

If you haven't don't your homework before getting this, just make sure it's paired with fast glass. This is a common statement from the other users of this.

I see no difference

B&H has nothing to do with this review. Their service was great as usual. The product didn't seem to make any change in the manual focusing ability. I swapped with original screen couple of times but I saw no change. For those reviews who think it made their camera's autofocusing better, I think light for autofocus travels a different path and use contrast/ phase/ wavelength monitoring for negative feedback for the focusing motor in the lens. So has nothing to do with the focusing screen. Focusing screen helps with the human's negative feedback mecanism which changes with tiredness and alchohol consumption.

It's not really all that difficult. There are only 2 screws that hold it in place which are very accessible once the lens is taken off the body.

question

I have a fleet of fast SLR lenses so this screen should help with them. I have only one Canon lens, but it is the 28-135 f3.5-5.6 zoom, which is outside of the recommended range for this screen. I understand the screen will darken the viewfinder with slower lenses, which is OK, but will it affect autofocus or throw the exposure off? I don't see switching screens for this one lens, but I'm not sure if the lens will be usable with this screen. Thanks.
Asked by: K.A.
The focusing screen will not affect autofocus with lenses. Just to your eye it might look darker in the finder when you use your slower lenses like the 28-135mm lens. It is recommended not to use that screen if you are using slower lenses.

question

Does this focusing screen affect live view at all? 11 of the 13 lenses I own are 2.8 or faster, but I do routinely use the Canon 16-35 f/4 which I understand will darken in the viewfinder. However I mostly use the 16-35 for landscapes with live view anyway so just wondering what to expect there. Thanks for your input.
Asked by: Kristian
Nope, not at all. Live view bypasses the focusing screen completely.
