Canon HV-40 overview

  • 1Description

Canon's HV40 gives you the quality of HDV recording at an affordable price for the aspiring or indie film-maker. Capture true 1920 x 1080 video like a pro with the camera's 2.96Mp CMOS sensor, DIGIC DV II Image Processor and 10x HD Video Lens. If you feel like recording in standard definition the camera affords you that flexibility as well. And there's no need to carry a still camera around because the camcorder captures 3.1Mp still images to miniSD cards.

The HV40 boasts a range of film-like shooting rates, including 24p Native (60i) and Cinema Modes and 30p Progressive Mode. To make even higher quality videos there's the Advanced Accessory Shoe for attaching external Canon lights and microphones that run off the power of the camcorder. If you're looking for a tape-based camcorder to take your videos to the next level, the HV40 has what you need.

Record to MiniDV
By capturing video to MiniDV, you can take advantage of both its universal compatibility with existing technology while also benefiting from a level of reliability, which professionals have counted on for over a decade. The HV40 lets you record in both 1080 High Definition as well as standard definition for use with your non-HD equipment.
Image Sensor & DIGIC DV II
The 2.96Mp full HD CMOS sensor gives you 1920 x 1080 HD video while working in tandem with Canon's DIGIC DV II Image Processor to reduce image noise and customize the color and tonality of your video and still images.
Canon 10x HD Video Lens
The 10x HD Video Lens lets you capture landscapes and tight shots easily, with three fixed zoom speeds for fluid transitions. The super spectra coating keeps flare and ghosting at bay while the lens' aspheric design cuts down on aberration while boosting resolution.
2.7" Multi-Angle Vivid Widescreen LCD
The multi-angle widescreen LCD gives you a generous display on which to compose and playback your shots, not to mention the ability to shoot from more angles. The hard coat AR surface reproduces color accurately with reduced glare and enhanced contrast.
3.1Mp Digital Photos
Capture 3.1Mp digital photos to miniSD memory cards and enjoy special functions that make shooting easier, like the Histogram Display, scene modes and auto focus. You can also simultaneously capture still images while shooting video or save stills to a miniSD card after the video has already been shot.
SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization
Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer corrects for hand shake, moving subjects and the inevitable slight bump. SuperRange Gyro and image sensors also correct for a wider range of incidents such as body sway and recording in a moving car as well as ensuring no loss in image quality.

    Canon HV-40 reviews

VIXIA HV40 High Definition Camcorder is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 336.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You can use it without tape too. As in my headline. Yes, you can use it for tapeless recording too, and in full 1920x1080 *UNCOMPRESSED* top quality - there, I've said it again. Just do your research * (tapes NEVER get corrupted, and even a mangled tape can be read - something you'll never be able to do with corrupted/dead memory cards).Hints for tapeless recording: HyperDeck Shuttle, or Atomos Ninja. I use shuttle, and although I only get less than 8min per 60GB SSD, the quality is simply AMAZING. You'd have to spend $20,000+ for the same quality professional rig, lol!The only con of this camera I know of (after using it since 2009) is noise at low light conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camcorder, but beware DV locked!!! Great camera and camcorder, but beware changing the playback option for the camcorder (from Auto or HDV to DV Locked). Despite a poor description of DV Locked on p. 44 of the Instruction Manual, one of the implications of choosing this setting is to prevent the user from viewing videotape on playback; all you get is the blue screen. Now, you actually have been videotaping, but you won't know it till you change the playback option. You'll have thought the unit went belly-up, but don't fear. Regrettably, the instore camera sales agents couldn't figure it out; my 12-year old son did, however. Happy filming!--Ross Miller

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Product Works as Advertised I bought this camcorder to double as both a home video tool and as a camcorder for amateur film projects. It is probably the only camcorder that meets my technical requirements for these two uses due to its small size, being relatively affordable, and is probably the only consumer level camcorder to be able to shoot in native 24p. Moving up from standard def to the high def provided in this camcorder is a night and day difference in terms of image quality. Could not have been more impressed. However, the only downside is that the provided battery does not last very long as well as the camcorder did not come with the cable necessary to transfer video to the computer to edit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of features and good price Just got this camera a couple weeks ago after reading many reviews and watching demo videos. So far very pleased with the quality. Not only the picture, but the camera itself. I've used Canon camcorders for years and this is by far the best camcorder I have ever used. Some features I appreciate are: Auto or manual focus, good color presets, and the accessory shoe for a bigger mic. Also the unit opens on top to change the tape. This way you dont have to disconnect unit from tripod to change tapes. I use my cameras for filming outdoor sports and making movies.(Kitesurfing, Dirtbiking, and Snowmobiling) Thanks for a great camera, and a great price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! I bought this camera as it was the most afordable 24P camera with a large image censor. I bought it for a canoe trip I did for two weeks up the Missinaibi River in Northern Ontario. It did not disappoint. It is a brilliant camera. The colours, the sharpness and the quality were just outstanding. I was recommended this camera by a friend and it was as good as he said it was. I will be using this camera much more now to shoot short films and skits. The only issue I have with this camera is that you cannot get a decent Mic for it that will sit on the camera as the Mics all seem to pick up the sound of the tape moving in the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this camcorder! This camcorder is awesome! It's got a piano-black finish, that looks very nice with all of my other black equipment. The 24p Native mode along with Cinema mode look very nice, and the ability to focus on a subject while blurring the back/foregrounds is a good match with this camera and its features. I am extremely impressed with the colors on the images and how the camcorder operates as a whole. I recommend this to anyone looking for a higher-on-the-consumer-end HD camcorder with some fancy features to show off as well. I really like that it can take other lenses too because no other cam I owned had that ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's make me happy Hello from Russia! I very much love high quality of a picture, and hv40 have given me it. I am simply shaken by the seen. I can simply write down the nature, street, birds, trees, people, pigeons... And then I look in fullhd and simply I enjoy, enjoy both eyes and soul, it as meditation. In the childhood I dreamt of it but then at us was not fullHD, we not that could not remove that similar, we even could not look. And now my dreams were embodied in a reality. It is As though banal did not sound, at us this camcorder costs more than 2000$, and from a site b&h I have ordered it with delivery for $ to that it is immensely glad.p.s. Sorry for my english.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this camcorder. Great choice! I love this camcorder. I was a little worried about tape noise when researching it, but found that no matter what camcorder you buy, you really need a separate mic. I was also worried about whether I would mind the bulky tapes, but video shot on mini-dv tapes looks better and is easier to work with. I also figure that if I am already investing in a good camera and plan to tote around a bunch of gear in the effort to capture great video, I might as well go for the best and deal with the tapes. I'm really glad I did. This camcorder is easy to use and the auto controls are great. But if you want to learn how to use some of the features of a professional camera, this one can give you some great practice!
