Ikelite 6871.02 overview

  • 1Description

To enable the capture of brilliant images of coral, pygmy seahorses, and other sea life at depths as great as 200', Ikelite offers this dedicated Underwater Housing for your Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera. An Ikelite bulkhead sync connector and built-in TTL circuitry allow for the attachment of optional, external strobes. Ikelite DS flash units can be used in TTL or manual exposure mode, while third-party strobes will work in manual mode.

Ergonomic mechanical controls afford access to virtually all camera functions. An included aluminum tray and dual quick-release grips improve balance and handling, while offering attachment points for optional lighting arms. Built for durability, the housing is made in the USA from corrosion-resistant polycarbonate, which is clear to enable you to monitor the O-ring seal and maintain a full view of the camera.

The enclosure ships without a required lens port, and accepts various interchangeable dome and flat ports for a broad array of zoom, macro, and wide-angle lenses. For full compatibility details, see the Port Chart.

Construction Details
  • Depth rating: 200'
  • Made by hand in the USA from corrosion-resistant polycarbonate
  • Clear to allow you to monitor the O-ring seal and maintain a full view of the camera
  • Spring-loaded latches on lid ensure secure closure
Strobe Connection and Operation
  • Use of an optional, external strobe will be extremely helpful once you descend further than 15-20' underwater, except when shooting with color filters on very clear days with bright sunlight
  • Strobe restores hues that get absorbed by water, so your images are vibrant, accurate, and natural-looking
  • Try to stay no more than 3-4' away from subject to preserve natural colors in images
  • Ikelite bulkhead with TTL circuitry enables reliable electrical triggering of external strobes via sync cords
  • Ikelite DS strobes are operable in iTTL or manual exposure mode
  • Third-party strobes are operable in manual mode only
  • Compatible with the following Ikelite DS strobes: DS50 (above serial number 70000), DS51, DS125 (above serial number 5000), DS160, DS161, and DS200
  • Hard-wired sync connection produces more accurate exposure than that which would be possible via wireless or fiber-optic connection to slave strobes
  • Unlike a fiber-optic cable connection, the sync cord method does not require the camera's built-in flash to fire, so it conserves battery life, speeds up recycle times, and prevents heat buildup inside the housing
  • TTL circuitry transmits direct electrical impulses from your camera to your strobes, precisely adjusting flash output and eliminating signal interference, inconsistent exposures, and false triggering
  • Make exposure adjustments directly via the controls at the back of the housing
  • Tweak your TTL exposure or take full manual control without taking your hand off the housing
  • Two stops of over and underexposure compensation in TTL mode, and 8 power settings in manual mode, for making adjustments in half-stop increments
Controls and Handling
  • Large, ergonomic mechanical controls, including push-buttons, knurled knobs/dials, and levers, afford access to all camera functions except for the multi-controller
  • Over-sized knob smoothly engages Ikelite's universal zoom gear system
  • Includes an aluminum tray and dual grips that afford improved handling and provide attachment points for lighting arms
  • An additional lighting arm or other lightweight accessory can be connected to the housing's aluminum 1/4"-20 top mount
  • Housing body alone has slightly negative buoyancy in freshwater; the overall buoyancy of the system varies depending on your choice of lens and port
Lens Port System
  • Ships without a required lens port
  • Accepts various interchangeable dome and flat ports with 4 locking latches for a broad array of zoom, macro, and wide-angle lenses
  • For full compatibility details, see the port chart linked above
  • Two sets of zoom gears are provided: one for the majority of popular zoom lenses with large diameters of 2.8-3.0", and another for lenses with smaller diameters of 2.8" or less
  • Both sets of gears are easy to install and require no modification to the lens

    Ikelite 6871.02 reviews

Underwater Housing with TTL Circuitry for Canon EOS 5D Mark II is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So amazing I purchased a 2nd one! I purchased this housing to shoot underwater engagement photos. I picked this brand/model because of the price and the fact that the case is clear and you can see the entire camera (unlike other brands that only allow you to see some of the camera. I liked the housing so much that I recently purchased another one so that I can work with my assistant doing video of the underwater shoots. Amazing product! I bought multiple lens ports to use with the housing, but I have found that using the dome port with the canon 14mm super side works the best. I also purchased the underwater strobe, the 160 ikelite, and love the way my images are turning out. The only remark that I have is that the latches sometimes pop open so fast that they smack your fingers when you are opening the case. Slightly painful but not a reason to avoid purchasing the housing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great housing Very nice and strong for photoshooting. The conection between the housing and the dome let you a little bit scary before your first dive. But after that you will see that everything works well. For the next generation: PLEASE WE NEED A MANUAL FOCUS ON ALL THE LENS for the video possibilities of the 5D that will be GREAT!!! A doble flash conection will be apreciate also and some better and easier instructions. For that the best solutions is the videos made from some users on Internet. The other option is buying a lot of aspirin to understand how mounting the super wide dome...;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two weeks amongst the kelp and rocks We got flipped in our boat in the ocean and lost the housing in a bunch of rocks and kelp. Two weeks later it washed up on shore in Perfect condition. amazing. I heard these housings aren't super reliable, but it was so cheap we could only afford this one. I guess it is more reliable than people give it credit for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great housing, Excellent value! I really like the ikelite housings overall and have used now models for the canon 20D, 5D classic, and now 5Dmk2. Ikelite designs the controls very well and its easy to operate the camera freely underwater. I really appreciate being able to control the zoom and also the flash metering. Also I like the clear acrylic housings because you can see your camera and easily check for leaks - so far haven't had any in any of the housings but still a nice confidence check.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING!!! everything works RIGHT!!! I used this product in Grand Cayman ... I Highly recommend this .. I used a 28mm with the housing ... AMAZING! I was disappointed that I could not use my 16-35 2.8 Prime lens wide , but Im told they are in the works to making that housing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent product, best value Great product and definitely the best value in underwater housings. Ikelite housing may not have all the bells and whistles of other brands, but for half the price of many top of the line housings, Ike housings perform admirably. I've used Ikelite for over 6 years with different cameras. The only flood I ever had was user error (sand in the o-ring). I can definitely recommend Ikelite as an affordable but still reliable housing manufacturer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great housing This is my second housing of this same model and I'm looking forward to start using it. (The previous was broken during a flight back home... and the airline refused to pay for the damage!). I used it in Seychelles to photograpfh marine life and I had the best of the experiences. Very easy-to-use, didn't flooded (which is great), all the buttons on the right places and very accesible. I recommend it!
