Pentax 88039 Overview

  • 1Description

Designed and purpose-built for use on the water in all weather conditions, the Pentax 7x50 Marine Binocular is outfitted with a magnification and objective lens combination that ensures a wide exit pupil and enhanced light-gathering ability, plus an illuminated compass and ranging reticle. These features work together to help mariners make it back to port time and again.

Optically, the binocular makes use of phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms that are coated with highly-reflective silver coatings to maximize internal light transmission and limit diffraction. The objectives are fully multi-coated to further improve light transmission. These features complement each other and produce bright and clear high-contrast images with accurate color fidelity. By combining a relatively low magnification with large objective lenses, the binocular draws in copious amounts of light required for use in challenging light such as at dawn and dusk, or in heavy fog and thick cloud cover. The combination also produces a wide exit pupil to ensure complete coverage as they open and dilate in low light to ensure a full field of view and maximize light entering the eyes.

The compass uses both passive and active illumination so that during the day the ambient light passes through a diffuser filter to show the bearing indicators, and in low light or at night an LED emitter can be activated to provide illumination — ensuring easy readings in all conditions. An in-view ranging reticle is also included to enable users to estimate the distance to objects, or to estimate their size. These tools allow mariners to more accurately navigate waters. Rounding out the features in a nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed housing for waterproof and fogproof performance, and a slip-resistant rubber armoring for sure handling in cold and wet conditions.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 7x power magnifies objects while ensuring a wide exit pupil
  • Large 50mm objective lenses draw in copious amounts of light to boost low-light performance and lengthen eye relief
  • Compact roof prism design helps to minimize form-factor despite the large objective lenses
  • BAK4 prism glass delivers a round exit pupil, and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • Phase-corrected and highly-reflective silver coated prisms limit internal diffraction to improve resolution and contrast
  • Fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission to ensure bright and clear images with accurate color fidelity
  • External lens coating prevents salt, oil, dirt, and other materials from adhering to the surface and obscuring the view
  • 7-element/5-group lens construction
  • 350-foot field of view at 1000 yards
  • Easy-to-read compass scale allows reading to be taken in rough or rolling seas
  • Internal system enables quick dampening when movement is stopped after panning for faster and more accurate reads
  • Compass directional bearings are defined in precise 1° increments
  • Ranging reticle allows users to estimate distance to an object or the size of it; 5-mil wide stadia with hash marks every 10 mils
  • Passive daytime illuminator uses an exterior diffuser filter to highlight compass using ambient light
  • Active LED compass illuminator for low light or night use
  • Simple one-button activation, LED illuminator only stays on while button is depressed to conserve battery power
  • Runs on two included LR43 batteries
Use and Handling
  • Short closed-bridge provides a stable platform for compass, reticle, and focusing mechanism
  • Large slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate even while wearing gloves
  • Fast internal focusing system runs through entire range in under two rotations
  • ±3 right-eye dioptric correction, with precise click-stop adjustment locks
  • 56-73mm interpupillary adjustment range
  • Long 17.6mm eye relief helps to reduce eye strain and improves viewing comfort
  • Wide 7.1mm exit pupil will completely cover pupils as they open and dilate in low light to provide a full-frame field of view without vignetting
Construction Details
  • Rubber covered exterior provides a sure grip and protects the internal mechanisms from damage
  • Nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof to a depth of 4.9' (1.5m), and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme changes in temperature or environmental conditions

    Pentax 88039 Reviews

7x50 Marine Binocular (Compass, Ranging Reticle) is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Stuff I just got them in a few weeks ago and they are very good as far as optics goes. Box says made in china, ( maybe japanese glass? maybe?) in any case very sturdy looking, but have yet to put them through the paces. For those who were glasses, you will be happy to know they have twist up/ down eyecups. I do not wear glasses, so that's a bit annoying to me...Many major manufactuers in the east are doing this on top of the line binocs now. Nikons later Monarch series does as well, just FYI. I have a very narrow face, still works fine as far as adjustments, maybe not for the kids.(one reviewer mentioned this..I'm 5'6).The price is excellent, best on the web ... I bought these as a replacement for a older model Monarch that was stolen from me, I would say I did well.7X is plenty of magnification, and has no shake you can get in 10X.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Crystal clear a great value in this clas The compass is handy when boating, it keeps you focused on direction along with your target. The rangfinder feature is perfect when your anchoring, it helps to give you the distance from shore to the aft of your boat. I couldn't find anything I would not like about this product. The size is perfect, lightweight, a very good binocular with these features for the money

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks great but lacks direction These give a nice sharp bright image with accurate color and low chromatic abberation. They are one of the few roof prism 7 x 50s, so are more compact than the competition. The centre focus knob makes them more convenient than IF types. If you have very narrow eyes these may not work for you.The reticle is clear but minimal so it doesn't obscure your view. This makes them suitable for general use, not just marine use.The compass on mine is terrible. It is poorly made (the markings are not even straight) and mine has a large air bubble inside. I can't even tell north from south let alone get an accurate reading. Oh well, a dedicated compass is always best for that anyway.Apart from the compass I am very pleased with these. I paid 70% less than what I would have in Australia, ...Once I added them to my cart the price dropped$

Rated 1 out of 5 by from below average binos. Nice look and feel. Good price. Issues with diopter not focussing anywhere near useable. Compass cover was cross thteaded and does not seal to a water tight standard. All in all quite a dissapointing pair of binoculars. Maybe i just got a bad pair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great shipmates I'm using these for coastal pilotage and find them excellent. Sharp, bright viewing. The compass is great, easy to see and nice and steady, easy to get an accurate bearing. They focus down to 1.5 metres. A pleasure to use.
