If you need one mic to handle anything from lead vocals on the stage to podcast recording without the cumbersome audio interface, the Samson Q2U will come in handy, doing so in an all-inclusive package at a cost-effective price. Styled in here in gray, the Q2U consists of a handheld dynamic microphone, a desktop tripod mic stand (with extension tube), a mic clip, a foam windscreen, a USB cable for digital recording, and an XLR cable for analog connections.

You probably see the potential: if you want to travel to the gig with your own microphone, the Q2U will let you do that, plugging into the house PA's XLR input without fuss. If you want to take the mic to a buddy's house for a conversational podcast, again, this is all possible with the Q2U. And finally, whenever you want to rant on your own a la Bill Burr or Mark Maron, setting up your podcast is as easy as plugging the mic into your computer over USB.

Fits Your Needs
The Q2U features both XLR and USB outputs that enable flexible digital recording to any Mac- or Windows-based computer workstation, while simultaneously connected to any analog mixer, preamplifier or PA system.
Handheld Form Factor
This solidly constructed mic is designed to be held in your hand, though it can also be mounted on a stand—such as the one included with the mic. Because of its design, the mic lends itself to comedy shows and comedy podcasts, though it'll work for just about any vocal-centric purpose.
Cardioid Polar Pattern for Stage & Home Use
The microphone makes use of a directional cardioid polar pattern to minimize off-axis sound. This polar pattern naturally, yet effectively tamps down room tone and focuses the audio capture on what's directly in front of the mic. That's why it's equally effective on the stage and in the home-studio.
Built-In 3.5mm Headphone Jack
The mic offers a headphone jack for monitoring. Just plug a pair of headphones into the Q2U's 3.5mm jack, and you'll be able to listen to your broadcast-quality audio in all its glory.
Easy-to-Use Controls, Minimal Powering Required
The mic offers a simple on/off switch for the XLR output. This acts as a mute, which can come in handy live. This switch has absolutely no bearing on powering the mic—in fact, as this is a dynamic microphone, it requires no power to run when used in the analog domain. When you're plugged into a digital device, such as a computer, the mic will draw power from the computer to operate the digital interface.
Broadcast-Quality Audio Capture
The mic records audio at 16-bit / 48 kHz, giving you the broadcast standard for media playback. It's also worth noting that it can simultaneously record digital audio over USB and route analog audio over its XLR connection, so you can effectively mirror its output if you so choose.
Driverless Setup
The Q2U requires absolutely no drivers to run out of the box. Just plug it in to your computer and you should be good to go.
Included Hardware
In addition to the mic, the Q2U includes a desktop tripod stand with extension tube, a mic clip, a foam windscreen, a USB cable, and an XLR mic cable, giving you almost everything you need to get started.

Samson Q2U Reviews

No longer working after 1 year

The sound quality is great when it works. One year later today, people said they couldn't hear me at all in zoom meeting, so I test the microphone, indeed it produces noisy voice. Disappointed.

Best value in podcast microphones

This is my second Samson Q2U, purchased from B&H--now I have one for my home office, and one for my travel bag. Great audio quality for voice recording--I use it on my podcast every week. If you're starting a podcast, buy this instead of a Blue Yeti--you'll be happy you did!

Everywhere I looked for advice while I was preparing to start my podcast recommended this microphone as the best entry level value. It is amazing. The sponge wind screen is enough to block my plosives.

Great mic on sale

Amazing mic for the price, needs to be close to mouth but that's fine.

Works fine until the noise is unbearable.

I asked for an exchange because the first mic had a hardware issue where the sound captured was insanely quiet. And the second mic that arrived was better and I was able to work with it (it just needed a boost), but it starts to develop quite a lot of noise after a couple hours of use that not even filters can quiet down because it's so loud. I am not sure how long the noise lasts but I basically have to unplug the mic for a whole day so it gets bearable to work with it again. If I lower the volume of the mic to reduce the noise, nobody can hear me, if I boost it with another program you can very much hear the white noise (and sometimes clicking noise if I leave the mic plugged in for several hours that comes from the mic, changing cables doesn't work). I am pretty sure I got the bad luck of getting two faulty microphones but now I am discouraged to keep trying with this mic or even recommend it despite the other positive reviews, my luck could be your luck.

Great kit

Big thanks to the BH team for making such a great kit. The crane arm blows the stock mic tripod out of the water and offers better support and more flexibility. I suggest using the original mic clip, as it fits better than the one that comes with the crane arm. A shock mount would be great, but I didn't expect it (though it's mentioned on the crane arm box, which can be misleading). The headphones are comfortable and do their job just fine. And I really appreciate the thought behind adding a USB extension cord and cord straps. It's my first mic setup, and I wouldn't think about these minor but important things. Q2U is great for me (I don't even hate my voice somehow), and even though I record in an untreated room, I get quality sound with just minor post-editing. The only problem I had was with connecting to my phone, but I suspect the issue is with either my phone's receptacle or a faulty OTG adapter. All in all, I'm happy with this purchase.

Good quality. Great deal!

I picked this up on sale, but it would have been worth every penny full price. Coupled with the Zoom Podtrak, these dynamic mics produce sound close to mics much more expensive. Build quality is good with everything feeling solid. The black band around the cup of the mic did come lose when the wind screen was removed, but that easily snapped back in place. Definitely a solid buy.

Awesome mic!

I've read that 'dynamic' mics work best when the sound source (voice or instrument) is close to the mic -- say six-eigth inches for example; but their sound pickup range falls off quickly as you move much further away from the mic (which has the advantage of reducing background noise). Is this true for this mic?
Asked by: David
That is true for dynamic mics in general. Some dynamic mics are more sensitive than others. This one in particular requires the source of sound to be just a few inches away. Probably closer to around 3-4 inches or so. The polar pattern also will determine how far off axis the source of the sound can be until the sound drops out. This Samson Q2U is a cardioid pickup pattern which is about 120 degrees around.
