Zoom R16 Overview

The R16 from Zoom unites many different audio tools into a single powerful unit; it's a stand-alone multi-track recorder, and a USB 2.0 computer audio interface/control surface, as well as a battery powered field recorder & mixer. Whether you're recording a full band, working on an indie film, or just using the built-in mics to demo a new song on your acoustic guitar, you'll always have a use for the Zoom R16.

Using the R16 as a stand-alone recorder could mean many different things to different people. If you're a musician, this means that you can record a full live band and overdub up to 16 tracks, without ever touching a computer. If you're a film maker, you can record all of your lavalier and shotgun microphones in the field, and mix them to camera as well. If you're a photographer, you can record ambient sounds for use in a slide show presentation, and use the R16 as the playback device at the installation.

Using the R16 as a USB 2.0 audio interface to record into a computer also opens up different possibilities. Musicians can use it to track and mix with their favorite music production program, or use the included Cubase 4 LE software. Film makers and photographers can record voice overs and ADR (additional dialog recording) directly into their favorite non-linear editing programs like Final Cut Pro.

The control surface capabilities of the R16 will also benefit Final Cut Pro users (and other NLE programs). Its dedicated transport controls and jog/shuttle can be used to control the software, allowing the user to be less dependent on their mouse and keyboard. This is a huge benefit for musicians as well. Control surfaces help people focus on their creative work, rather than make them feel like they're checking their email.

With all of the potential uses and creative possibilities the R16 provides, it truly stands in a class of its own. When you factor in its budget-friendly price-tag, it really becomes an incredible option for any aspiring creative person.

Can you gang one R16 and one R24 unit for simultaneous recording of 16 tracks?
Asked by: Steve
YES, see page 38 of the R24 Operations Manual - "Connection to an R16 is also possible. When connecting to an R16, always set the R24 as the Master."

There seems to be 2 different versions of the R16 in the photos (1st photo's the odd one). Is this the newest version of the R16? If not, which version is it?
Asked by: Chris
John - The first two photos are clearly of different units. Check out the buttons in the lower right...the 4-way set and the wheel around them have extra plastic in the first photo for example. I'm just wondering which item is being sold here. If one of the photos is of an older version (which would make sense) can you just confirm that this is the latest version of the R16 being sold? Thanks

Can you use this to record to 8 separate, ...

Can you use this to record to 8 separate, independent tracks when using the USB interface? I'd like to record drums directly into my DAW and would like to have each track recorded to it's own track within the software. Thank you!!
Asked by: Donald
The Zoom R16 has a 2-channel USB output only. The Tascam US-16x08 USB Audio/MIDI Interface, B&H # TAUS16X08 is a similarly priced 8- channel USB interface that I would recommend, but it is only an interface, not a portable studio recorder. The Tascam US 16X08 would allow for 8 microphones to input separately to your computer's DAW.

question

Can I gang two R16 units via USB to record 16 tracks simultaneously in standalone mode?
Asked by: MARCO ANTONIO
16-track synchronized recording by connecting two R16s:If you want to record more then 8 tracks at the same time for a band performance, for example, you can increase the number of tracks by connecting two R16s with a USB cable. NOTE: Perfect synchronization of the start timing inrecording by two R16s is not guaranteed. There will be a gap of approximately 1-2 ms.

question

One more question - if a person is using track 5 & 6 for condensor mics using phantom power can a person still use the internal mics on tracks 7 & 8? ie have 4 active mics going at once? Thanks in advance.
Asked by: David
The Zoom R16 allows users to record up to 8 tracks simultaneously. You may have condenser mics connected to channels 5 and 6, and also assign the built in mics to tracks 7 and 8.

question

I noticed that this unit's description says that it can't be used with 64 bit OS. Can someone confirm that? I realize you can just record to SD but if a person wants to use it for a mixer or anything else then no go on Win 10 64bit. What a pitiful oversight by the engineers.
Asked by: David
You can record to an SD card, or as an interface connected to your computer (with Win 10 64 bit, sure no problem, I do it!)
