Leupold 65550 overview

  • 1Description

With the performance of a full-sized optic but measuring only 5.5" long to fit comfortably in the hand, the Leupold 8x42 BX-1 Rogue Binocular delivers performance without weighing you down on the trail.

This model is outfitted with a traditional Porro prism light path, using BAK4 ecologically-friendly lead- and arsenic-free glass, with anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics to produce high-contrast views with accurate colors and a rich depth of field for an immersive observational experience. To boost its performance in low-light conditions, the Rogue features larger objectives with a generous exit pupil, and comfortable eye relief that enable users to easily look through the eyepieces for long periods of time while enjoying bright full-view images without experiencing eye fatigue.

To withstand the rigors of the outdoors, Leupold made the chassis out of a lightweight and durable aluminum alloy and wrapped it in a protective rubber armor that provides a slip-resistant grip, even in cold and wet weather. The optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature and environmental changes.

Optical Performance
  • Moderate 8x magnification brings subjects in close while producing a wider exit pupil and wider field of view versus high-power models
  • Moderate 42mm objective lens diameter improves low-light performance without excessive bulk or weight
  • Traditional Porro prism design makes it comfortable to hold, and presents a rich depth of field allowing users to more easily discern the relative distance between objects in the view
  • BAK4 prisms deliver a round exit pupil, and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics improve light transmission, clarity, contrast, and color rendition
  • 341-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Large textured and rubberized center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate, even when wearing gloves
  • Right-eye dioptric correction enables user to compensate for optical prescription for sharper views
  • 54-72mm interpupillary adjustment range
  • Twist-up rubber eyecups for easy use with or without eyecups
  • Comfortable 16.5mm eye relief helps to reduce eye strain and improve viewing comfort during long glassing sessions
  • Wide 5.25mm exit pupil will completely cover most pupils as they open and dilate in low light

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Clear Glass Very clear glass, light, and small enough to single hand (and I don't have the biggest hands in the world). The glass is significantly better than the Nikons that they replaced. Which were not too bad, BTW. One thing that needs improvement, the outer (objective?) lens covers need improvement. One falls out repeatedly, even when inside the case. The other isn't very secure either. I'll be looking for something to upgrade that in the near future. Still, for the price, you just can't beat it. Exactly what I needed. And, as always, the service at B&H was outstanding.
