The AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens from Nikon is a wide-angle to short telephoto zoom lens specified for use with DX format Nikon DSLR cameras. Its 35mm focal length equivalence is 25.5-82.5mm, enabling a versatile set of perspectives that incorporate most focal lengths used in day-to-day and travel photography. At the wide-angle end it provides an inclusive view useful for landscape vistas, interiors, street shots and group shots of friends and family. The zoom advances to cover standard focal length and short telephoto perspectives, ideal for portraiture and to mildly magnify your subjects. Its constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 provides consistency throughout the zoom range and is effective in low light and allows shallow depth of field control.

The lens' optical design includes three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements to control chromatic aberration and three aspherical elements to reduce coma and aspherical aberrations. Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating improves light transmission, minimizing flare and ghosting. A circular 9-blade diaphragm creates pleasing, natural looking out-of-focus highlights.

An internal focus system lends itself to a compact form factor, provides precise focusing and does not extend or rotate the front elements while focusing. A Silent Wave Motor offers fast and near-silent autofocus action and manual focus override allows for precise manual control even in AF mode. This G-type Nikkor lens is designed with no aperture rings and offers easy operation.

Fast, wide-angle zoom lens for DX format cameras with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and a 35mm focal length equivalence of 25.5-82.5mm.
Three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements minimize chromatic aberration, provide higher resolution and superior contrast
Three aspherical lens elements minimize distortion, especially at the periphery, for superior optical performance
The Silent Wave Motor for swift autofocusing with superior accuracy and ultra-quiet operation
Internal Focusing design for smoother movement, close focus capability and a barrel that does not extend while focusing
M/A mode allows rapid switching between autofocus and manual even during AF operation, with virtually no time lag
The rounded 9-blade diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome lens! I use this for weddings. I actually traded in my D700 and stepped down to a D7000. I was using my 24-70mm f2.8 lens on my D7000, and it just wasn't wide enough at the wide end. So I bought this 17-55mm f2.8 lens with some reservation about its quality compared to the 24-70mm. I'm not disappointed at all! The pictures are sharp and the colors are great. I only have one small complaint and that is the focus ring. It is very narrow and at the very back of the lens adjacent to the camera body. When you are zooming in and out, you sometimes hit your other hand because the zoom ring is so close to the back. Otherwise, this lens rocks!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not What I Expected This lens has excellent build quality and the expected weight of a pro level lens. I shoot mostly wedding and family portraiture and this lens does not deliver the sharpness I want. I also own the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 VR lens and it delivers outstanding picture quality. I expected the same from this pro level lens. I tried several different lighting situations and F-Stop ranges on my D300. It just doesn't deliver the quality I want for my images. My copy also tends to backfocus. Everyone seems to really love this lens so I may send it back to Nikon for recalibration and see if that helps. Hopefully, my copy of this lens just needs to be tweaked.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp & Professional Quality Images. I read many reviews about this Lens but could't decide to buy OR not to buy. Finally decided to get it. I put it on my New D-7100, took many shoots with it, in day light, clouds, indoor photos, natural light source, group photos etc., in the beginning I compared these pics with the kit lens many time but with many images I saw a big difference of Sharpness because 17-55 is way better than the kit lens 18-105 or 18-55 etc., it is wide angle & f2.8 is real benefit. It's pricey & very bulky .75 Kg weight but has an excellent build quality, superior glass, fast & accurate focus, gives sharpness & a real professional look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal piece of glass This lens is extraordinary in its clarity, bokeh and sharpness. You see the difference when you look through it, let alone when you see the incredible images it creates. This lens is superb for portraits, weddings and other events or just as a general all purpose lens. It is a little heavy but trust me, it's worth its weight in platinum, or should I say oil. I just wish I hadn't waited so long to get it. I've been shooting for over 30 yrs and have never seen glass as crisp and well made as this lens and the 70-200 2.8 VR, both of which I broke down and bought after getting an extra paycheck a few months ago. Save and get this lens. You won't regret it!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Glass From the moment I unboxed this thing of beauty I was in love. I bought it so that I could have the quality I get from my 50 and 35mm primes but with the versatility of a zoom. This met the challenge quite easily. I wish I'd purchased this a few years ago when I bought the 14mm wide angle (which I've now sold to get this one, hehe). It has already replaced my 18-200 kit lens as my everyday lens. It's super fast and the images are amazing. I've used it in the studio quite a bit as well as out and about to include a recent trip to and old abandoned sanitarium in Beelitz, Germany.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY Solid This is essentially the equivalent (more or less) of Nikon's full-frame 24-70 f2.8 lens. On a DX camera, the 17-55 is roughly a 26-80 mm performer. Lens is exceptionally sharp, great contrast, and has a superb bokeh when used at apertures conducive to producing limited depth of field. Autofocus is fast and quiet, even in low light. This is a highly useful workhorse, well-built and very solid. Expensive? Yes. But as with all things camera, the best quality costs money. There are lesser alternatives in Nikon's line of DX lenses but all others have trade-offs. I highly recommend this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp & Good in Low Light I bought this lens for 3 reasons. 1. I like my subjects to be really sharp. 2. I like shooting in natural light, often indoors, and was looking for something good in low light. 3. I wanted a zoom. The 17-55mm has delivered in each of these aspects. I'm very pleased with the images I've taken with this lens. Nice, SHARP images! I debated between this and the 24-70mm. For me, the wide angle of 17mm has been very useful when shooting general pictures of family over the Christmas holiday, although there have been a few times when I wished I had more reach on the zoom. I think this lens will probably stay on my camera most of the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp, Sharp, Sharp on my D300 ... I purchased this lens in February 2009 as my own birthday present. I then put it on my D300, and other than to shoot a few images on the longer end of my 18-200 this lens HAS NOT been removed from my D300. I also own the Nikon 18-200VR and a Tokina 12-24 F4. I shot a wedding with this lens and the low light capabilities, and the sharpness, even at F2.8 made all the difference in the world!!! This lens is so sharp it is scary! It also has amazing clarity and brightness. Wow is all I can say. I'm so sorry I didn't invest in this item before!
