The Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] Lens made for the DX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs incorporates a motor built into the lens itself, which gives it the capability to autofocus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the motor built into the lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.

The Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD lens is a lightweight, compact, fast standard zoom lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras. The focal length of this lens is equivalent to approx. 26-78mm in 35mm format.

This lens offers an f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, to ensure stress-free photographic shots at all focal lengths and distances. Additionally, a broader photographic expression through the use of faster shutter speeds as a result of the maximum aperture offers enhanced photographic pleasure.

Optimized for Digital SLR
Two hybrid aspherical elements are used to noticeably reduce distortion and spherical aberrations in order to realize sharper imagery with accurate rendering.
LD Glass
An LD (Low Dispersion) glass element is used to accomplish effective compensation of on-axis and lateral chromatic aberrations, a critical factor for enhancing optical quality in digital photography, in order to achieve outstanding optical performance over the entire zoom range.
Enhanced Peripheral Illumination
Peripheral light fall-off is minimized when compared with that of conventional lenses for film cameras, so images are uniformly bright from the center to the periphery.
Internal Surface Coating to Reduce Ghosting and Flare
By employing "Internal Surface Coatings" (i.e., multiple-layer coatings on cemented surfaces of plural elements) and multiple-layer coating technology on ordinary elements, ghosting and flare due to the reflections that occur when light enters through the front element and reflections caused by the imagers themselves are reduced to the absolute minimum.
Zoom Lock Mechanism
The Zoom Lock prevents unwanted barrel extension when carrying the lens/camera combination.

SP 17-50mm f/2.8 Di II LD Aspherical [IF] Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 190.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharp as Knife! Great Lens for the $$$ This lens is sharp as a knife. It has a little softness and light falloff at the corners at 17mm but picks up dramatically from there. At 3 times cheaper than the Nikon alternative this lens is truly a bargain. It is smaller and much lighter than the Nikon. While the Nikon has some advantages at 17mm, this lens is its equal from what I can tell at 24 mm and above. (Other than focusing be a little slower) If you are not a brand snob and are looking for fast lens at a great price, look no further. It's a bargain and the size and weight is much more pleasing than the Nikkor alternative. Definitely recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic, versatile lens This was a replacement for the kit lens that came with my Nikon D500 and I have been very happy with it. Pictures come out exceptionally clear. It covers a useful range of focal lengths. The large diameter allows plenty of light in. I have been able to take indoor photos handheld with no flash, no problem. In fact, I took photos inside a dark cathedral and the photos came out clearer than you could see with the naked eye. The autofocus has worked well for me except in very dim light. While it is comparatively big and heavy, it has become my primary lens on the Nikon. If you are looking to step up from your kit lens, this is an excellent choice and well worth the $$.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really like this lens I did a lot of research prior to buying this lens. I also tried the nikon 17-55 2.8 and sent it back because of price and weight. The nikon was sharp but this lens looks sharper to me. I am using this on a d90 and d7000 and really like it. I also bought the non VC because all the posts I read said the non Vc was sharper and I am glad this lens was. The focus should be fast enough unless you are a sport shooter in which case I dont think you would want a lens this wide. This lens seems solid and a 6 year warranty is awesome. I also want to go FX soon so this was a good choice for my second body.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tried 3 copies :( I tried 3 copies of this lens with my D90. Unfortunately they all had front focus issues. The best of the 3 copies produced excellent results with smaller apertures (F/5.6 and beyond), but at F/2.8 at all focal lengths not only were the images front focused, but even with manual focus they were very soft. I'm sure I could of sent it to Tamron and have it calibrated, I just did not want to go through the hassle and wait. There are many good results with this lens, just not for me and my D90. Went with the Nikkor 16-85 and although it is much slower, it focuses properly straight out of the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than I expected I put off buying this due to all the negative reviews. I heard so many people saying the pictures aren't sharp, the lens feels cheaply made, etc. I couldn't disagree more. The pictures look fantastic, esp at f/4 or tighter. f/2.8 isn't bad either. I think the lens feels VERY well made. It is made about as good as my Tokina 11-16 and much better than the Nikon 55-200VR. Great lens. It solves my problem of not having a telephoto between 16mm and 55mm. I was sick of using primes only. Just make sure to get a Nikon rear cap. As with any non Nikon lens, the rear caps are garbage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good lens I have been looking at this lens for a long time, and finally decided to pull the trigger. The first copy came from a different seller, and it had significant amounts of visible dust inside, as well as a possible scratch behind the front element. Returned it and got the second one from B&H, and this one was flawless. So far it has given me excellent performance, with great sharpness and color accuracy. Makes for a great walk-around lens on my D90, as well as a reasonably high quality wide angle solution. It is light and nice ergonomically, excellent optically. Does not feel like the most durable and solid piece of equipment, but I was not expecting that.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great optics, sad autofocus. I used this for about a week and half, it was later returned for my money back. Optically this lens it top notch with good build quality. The auto focus seems good in adequate lighting, but it is SLOOOOOOWWWW in low light (when you press the shutter half way down to focus, it starts off fast to focus, but when it get close it does micro-steps into focus. You will notice this more as you have lower light.) How slow you ask? I will say, typical indoor rock concert lighting, it will take as much as 6 seconds to acquire focus. To compare, the Nikon 18-55 3.5-5.6 kit lens takes 1.5 seconds. This is just an unacceptably slow and no amount of photo shopping can fix this. Also note on build quality, there is a sign of the weak spot on the mount side of the zoom ring.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very nice lens I use this lens with a Nikon D90. While the 18-105 is a pretty good lens, I wanted a faster lens and the Tamron fits the bill. I had read a several reviews about front or back focus issues with tamrons, so I was a little hesitant. In fact as soon as I received the lens I did several tests and the lens focus was spot on. I used the lens over the Christmas holidays and it performed flawlessly. It isn't a huge step above the 18-105, but seems to produce a somewhat sharper image, especially when stopped down. I like the fact that with less light available, I do not have to reach for the flash as soon as I would with the 18-105. I enjoy using it and it will probably remain on my D90 most of the time.
