Profoto D1 Air Overview

  • 1Description

The D1 Air 1000W/s Monolight is a significant refinement of the ComPact monolight series from the company which having become synonymous with professional strobe lighting, is now celebrating its 40th anniversary.

No stone has been left unturned in the provision of tech and convenience features that seem to derive from professional photographers' wish lists. The sleek matte-black, high-impact polycarbonate finish encases strobe design that goes beyond the highly visible LED readout and is digital from the ground up. The 7 stop power range breaks down to 1/10 stop increments providing flexibility, precision and consistency, made possible by dual mode SMPS capacitor charging.

A new built-in 77 degree reflector (5.12" diameter) maximizes case space and is ideal for umbrella and softbox use. Features that we've come to expect from Profoto over the years: short flash duration, rapid recycling, a bright 300W modeling lamp and heavy-duty cabling are all on-board.

Profoto Air System technology replaces the sync cord, allowing the head to be remotely triggered from as much as 300 meters (1000 feet) away using a Profoto Air Remote or Air Sync transceiver (sold separately). The Air Sync provides wireless triggering (8 channels) via hot shoe or mini plug, while the Air Remote provides wireless triggering as well as full-function head control over 8 channels in 6 distinct groups. Additionally, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's optional Air USB with the included Studio software.

Modeling lamp operation is user-selectable: On/Off/Proportional and Free (manual). There is also a selectable flash confirmation (dimming) feature in addition to an audible, fully-recycled tone. The D1 is compatible with the full line of widely-acclaimed Profoto light-shaping tools. Finally, the self-sensing multi-voltage circuitry allows you to take the D1 anywhere in the world.

High-visibility LED readout with 7 stop range in precise 1/10th stop increments
Rapid recycling (0.2 - 2.0 sec @ 120V, 0.2 - 2.0 sec. @ 230V) insures that fleeting gestures and defining moments are caught, not lost
The 300W modeling lamp meets the challenge posed by a high ambient light level on set provides easy pre-visualization of the final shot
Air System technology makes the sync cord obsolete, allowing remote triggering of your D1 from as much as 1,000' (300 m) away. Alternately, the D1 Air's syncing and complete functionality can be wirelessly controlled via your PC or Mac by using Profoto's optional Air USB and the included Studio software
Lightweight design with durable polycarbonate shell and built-in 77 degree umbrella reflector
Self-sensing multi-voltage capability allows you to take the renowned Profoto quality of light anywhere in the world
Super-short flash duration (1/700 - 1/1,800 Sec. t0.5) provides crisp, action-stopping images, and is especially valuable for dance, sports and other highly kinetic subjects
Connect the D1 to the optional Profoto Air USB for PC and Mac for full control of your entire studio flash system via wireless communication
Highly consistent shot-to-shot performance within a +/- 0.05 stop range via dual-mode SMPS capacitor technology
Safety features include auto-diagnostic start-up circuitry, DDP (Deep Discharge Protection), pulse-charging capacitor circuitry temperature control and overload protection
Fully compatible with the extensive line of renowned Profoto light shaping tools

Note:D1 Air models require use of a Profoto Air remote or Profoto Air Sync for triggering of the strobe from the camera

Profoto D1 Air Reviews

D1 Air 1000W/s Monolight is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Product I purchased 6 of these Profoto D1 Monolights for location shooting. As a NYC Advertising Photographer I travel by aircraft 2-3 times per month. Because of travel restrictions and the downturned economic climate I've had to streamline my travel lighting kit. Clients no longer want to pay for multiple assistants and the thousands of dollars in fees when shipping heavy power packs and heads. Yet I still need to arrive at the job with enough equipment that is of high enough wattage to complete the shoot successfully. The Profoto monolights have worked extremely well for my location work. Their light-weight and small size allows me to carry 6 units in a single case that weighs less than 47 lb. The air-remote is very dependable and well made, great for controlling heads on booms and tall stands. I was concerned with the flat light surface of the head when used in softboxes: On testing the heads in my studio I found that on small and medium-sized boxes we see very little corner fall-off. On large and x-large boxes there is a noticeable light fall-off. There is also noticeable light fall-off when using the large 6 foot octa-boxes and strip-lights. Profoto has addressed this issue and now offers an accessory convex Pyrex dome, similar to what is on their standard flash heads that fixes this issue.( If your using umbrellas, grids or medium and small boxes the pyrex dome is not needed). If you are looking for the best 'bang for your buck' in profoto lighting, this is it. Plenty of power, recycling in less than a second, and a fast flash duration that will freeze moving subjects. Also, the flash head and modeling light work on all power voltages throughout the world (No need to carry voltage dependent modeling lights).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best monolight ever I had to save a lot to buy Profoto but the wait was worth it. I have four D1 Air 1000W/s for almost two and a half years and they are simply the best monolights you can buy. I researched a lot before deciding for Profoto and I have no regrets, it's a brand easy to love because it's quality. This monolights are powerful, consistent and a delight to the eyes. The controls are precise and with the air remote you can adjust your values wherever you are. Recycling times are fast and color temperature is always reliable. The only thing I would improve is the sound the fan produce, but I mostly work with loud music in the background, so that's in not a problem to me.I use the D1 Air 1000W/s in studio for product photography mostly, I started with the monolights, now I have some light shaping tools and other accessories, but that feeling of always want more Profoto products will never leave.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from D1 Air 1000W/s I rented these first. The air remote made my set up so much faster that I decided to purchase a couple of units. I like the ability to fire strobes via radio or IR (another light) which adds versatility. The other feature I like is that I can use my old pocket wizards equipment. For example, of course you can plug a PW in the strobe and fire it, but what I like is plugging my old PW camera release card into the camera putting the Air remote in the hot shoe and firing both with my old 10 year old 358 Sekonic light meter. 1. I don't need a second Air remote to trigger camera. 2. This allows me to set strobes, hot lights, and speed lights individually and view images on iPad while at the light vs. running back and forth to view images on computer or camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blazingly Fast! Just purchased the d1 recently, and I am in awe with how this light performs. 7 stop range is ridiculous, the fast recycling times enable you to shoot in continuous mode. It produces a nice even color temp. It's totally worth the price, prospective buyers should consider this an investment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic light, even better service I have a total of three of these D1s. The first one BH sent me was great. The second one didn't trigger very reliably, however, BH replaced it extremely quickly and the new one works perfectly. If you are shooting people and want a shallow depth of field, I would recommend the 500 or 250 watt second version. Even with a soft box and two diffusion panels its lowest setting usually still meters at f8. The light is very powerful and consistent. Unfortunately, Profoto went with their propriety triggering radio. Although the Propriety profoto radio works well, it does not work with pocket wizard frequencies. The work around is to put the air remote on top of a pocket wizard flex, or even more cumbersome sync cord the remote to a plus or multi max and have the air remote dangling. Why bother you ask? Because my beloved Sekonic 758DR has a pocketwizard in it, and I emailed pocket wizard and they responded they have no current plans to make an profoto air compatible transmission unit for their meters. Overall fantastic lights which I would highly recommend, despite the extra couple hundred bucks I had to spend getting them to talk to Sekonic. One star off for profoto not using pocketwizard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from D1 Air 1000W/s rocks! By far the best Monolight light I have ever used. Beautiful, powerful, intuitive functionality coupled with elegant design. Looking forward to buying a few more, a must own for any serious photographer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Travel w/o Sacrifice I use this in conjunction with a Vagabond Mini Lithium (3lbs) for a light weight travel setup. With the Air remote, it makes working on location a breeze. Amazing light quality, can't ask for more at this price point.

Would you recommend Profoto D1 Air 1000 over a Profoto Pro-10 for a daily fashion ecommerce studio? What's the difference in performance/ durability?
Asked by: Clarita P.
The main difference is the amount of control that you would have. A D1 would give you only 7 stops of control while the Pro 10 pack would allow for 11 stops of control, as well as TTL communication with Nikon, Canon, or Sony cameras. The right choice comes down to how much control you need. Otherwise, both systems are durable, with the D1 being a more compact solution.

I take it there is no firmware or other upgrade/ modification available to allow the D1 to shoot HSS, correct? (I realize the D2 has that capability, but I own D1's.)
Asked by: Terence S.
The D1's were made about 6 years before TTL was developed for the B1. The D1 doesn't have the necessary guts to make it shoot HSS.

Do I need an attachment for a softbox for the d1 air?

Yes, you'll need a speed ring to attach a standard softbox to your D1 (or any other Profoto light). See the link below for details:

Can i control power levels on this unit with Profoto AirTtl?
Asked by: David

I like the price of this in the kit form over the b1 kit plus it also comes with stands and the remote also has both lights at 1000 ws over 500 on the b1. However I am unsure on what battery pack I could use to power these on location. Any ideas for good battery packs that would power these both at full power for at least a couple hundred shots?
