Nikon 35mm f/1.8 overview

  • 1Description

Nearly as versatile as a prime lens can be, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G from Nikon is a 52.5mm-equivalent lens for DX-format cameras, and is characterized by its sleek form factor, normal field of view, and bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The fast design of the lens suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also enables improved control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus techniques. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element, which helps to control distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce notable sharpness and clarity. A Super Integrated Coating has also been applied to individual elements and controls lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in bright and backlit conditions. Complementing the optics is a Silent Wave Motor, which enables fast, near-silent autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override, to benefit both stills and video recording.

Normal-length prime lens is designed for DX-format Nikon F-mount cameras and provides a 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in low-light conditions and also affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.
One aspherical element is used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
A Super Integrated Coating has been applied to individual elements to suppress internal reflections, flare, and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. A rear focusing design is also used, where only the rear lens group is moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Nikon 35mm f/1.8 reviews

    AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Lens is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 2219.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens! I'm a pro photographer shooting digital SLR. I like to carry my camera at all times, but ended up leaving it behind some due to the excess weight of the larger lenses & extra flash unit. My 50mm was just not wide enough with the 1.5x factor of DX, but this 35mm gives me a normal lens to work with. The f1.8 is fantastic for low light without flash. Also, you can use the built in flash on your camera instead of the bulky hot shoe type without 'muzzle shadow' from the hood. This lens also has great bokeh!! For an amateur/beginner this is all you need. For a semi-pro, or pro, it's a great add on to your lens arsenal!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Low price for a fantastic prime lens I own a Nikon D5100 and wanted to purchase a lens that would be fast and provide a creamy bokeh for general photography. This little gem has behaved as advertised in every respect. It is light, super fast, and provides great bokeh, even though I'm just a photo enthusiast with very little experience. I have not taken it off the camera body since it was first installed, and chances are it will stay there for a loooong time. Just love it. And B&H was superb to deal with, with fast order processing and delivery. I have plans to get other lenses, filters, and lighting equipment from them. I'm very pleased with the product and the service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good DX Lens for the money For DX cameras, no doubt the best affordable lens that I've ever used* is the Nikon 50mm f/1.4. That said, this little 35mm is a little less than half the price and packs 85% of the punch. Dial this baby down to f/2.5 and you get a very sharp photo with shallow depth of field. When dialed down to f/1.8, the result is not quite sharp but definitely acceptable. I like this lens alot. It's super light, a very good focal length for walking around, and cheap. I could drop this lens and buy another one and still be cheaper than the 50mm f/1.4. So, for good solid quality photos(much better than the kit lens) get this little 35mm f/1.8 DX and you won't need much else for daily pics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fine prime lens Even though I have the Nikon 16-85 mm zoom, I wanted a faster lens close to 50mm so I purchased this f/1.8lens for use on my D300s(approx. 52mm on a DX camera). I do have Nikon lenses dating back to 1960's and 1970's and had them modified for use with the D300s and these lenses work beautifully on my D300s; I have to setup the aperture and shutter speed manually using my GE exposure meter and manual focusing is also required, the modifications are cheap and its great to use some of these good lenses. I bought the new 35mm, f/1.8 lens because of the automation. It is a wonderfully sharp lens and you can't beat the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Delightful lens I'm an amateur photographer, still learning the ropes, but this lens was recommended to me by a pro and I am very happy with it. I use it primarily to shoot outdoor scenes (I live in scenic rural Oklahoma, so there are many opportunities). I am pleased with the brightness and clarity of images taken with this lens, which has already demonstrated its versatility at night, under extreme weather conditions (ice, snow, and fog) and indoors (I recently photographed an interview session with Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin). I'd recommend this lens to anyone looking for a fixed-focal length glass that responds well under a variety of photographic/weather conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's Everything Everyone Says It Is 35mm on a DX body is my favorite combination as it comes closest to what I see. The 1.8G has been reviewed by enough photographers whose levels of ability, and experience, and subject matter it would be difficult to add anything of significance to the lens' legacy. My interest is primarily is capturing images of people, and the focal length, and speed of this lens are perfect. Images are bright, and crisp, color is properly rendered, and autofocus is fast, and sure. Working with a 35mm lens pushes me to get closer to, and in many cases develop an in-the-moment working relationship with my subject. If I could have only one lens, this would be the one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for DX user This lens is probably the first prime to get to complement (or better replace) a kit lens. That's my second one after leaving the first to a friend in need of better and lighter optics. The advantage of a fast prime is really obvious: you learn to use your lens and camera and you get much more creative possibilities. The optical quality is high, focus faster than 50mm 1.4G, light, easy to fit in any pocket (that's the only lens that will follow me 100% of the time), wide enough to allow full/half body shots indoor, maybe a bit short for more intimate portrait. And not to forget: very cheap!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will become your favorite lens! I own a Nikon D3100 that I have become fairly accustumed with through use, a semester-long photography class, and just practice. My first purchase outside of the kit 18-55 lens was a 55-200, because I wanted more zoom capability. After having these two, on photo forums there were guys from the beginning stressing to get a prime lens to really teach you even more about photography, composition, etc. I did a side by side comparison under the same light and was blown away with the results. Having the fast 1.8 aperture is truly the difference between a nice shot, and one that really stands out. I can't say enough good things about this lens, actually, it's making me dread putting on my others because the performance isn't nearly the same. Under low light conditions there is no way I'll ever shoot with my 18-55 again. Outside where its bright the aperture isn't as much of a deal breaker, but inside you can't compare unless you blow it out with flash.
