Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Overview

Presenting an ultra-wide field of view with advanced perspective and focus control, the TS-E 17mm f/4L is a Canon L-series tilt-shift lens well-suited to architecture and interior photography. Up to +/- 6.5° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 12mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition. The tilt-shift mechanism can be rotated +/- 90° for applying movements in any direction, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for greater stability.

Complementing the operation of the lens, this L-series prime is also distinguished by its optical design that features four of Ultra-Low Dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations as well as one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion. Individual elements also feature a Subwavelength Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality. Additionally, a floating optical system and a rear focus design help to maintain consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 9.8" to infinity.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 12mm of shift and +/- 6.5° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° for applying the movements in distinct directions.
Tilt-locking mechanism ensures the lens stays in place while shooting.
Four Ultra-Low Dispersion elements are used to greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to achieve greater clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element limits distortion and spherical aberrations to realize greater sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Sub Wavelength Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Floating optical system, along with a rear focusing mechanism, maintains consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, from 9.8" to infinity.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens is sealed against dust and moisture for working in inclement environmental conditions.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

The Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens is not compatible with Nikon cameras, so you would not be able to use it on the D600.

question

Does this lens come with an instruction manual or just a one page generic instruction sheet that covers all Canon lenses? ( my came with the one page generic sheet)
Asked by: Felix A.
The lens does not come with an instruction manual. Most manufacturers are only putting manuals onto their website to download instead of printing and shipping them with products.

question

Is there anyone out there who has used it on the new Sony Ar7II with the metabones adapter? What is your experience? Sharpness, auto anything work?
Asked by: lia R.
Metabones works great, don't forget the Sigma MC-11 that does also a great job! With both adapters there is no vignetting, no loss of sharpness (only a tube, no glass element involved), the 17 TS-E is an all manual lens...no auto nothing.. ; ) I use the Sigma with an Sony A7R2 and that improved a lot the image quality I had from the Canon 5DMK3 files I use to have.. ; )

question

i want to mount this on a pentax kmount. with the fotodiox canon to pentax adapter work with this lens?
Asked by: Anonymous
I would assume it would attach as there are many adapters that have been created to attach this lens to medium format systems because it's image circle is huge and the glass/image quality is very high quality. The systems for medium format do operate the aperture of the lens. Aperture would only work wide open as I think the fotociox adapter does not translate f-stop control for the lens. There may be a solution that allows you to manually stop down the lens I don't know of any myself.

question

One of the reviewers mentioned the Fotodiox Wonderpana Freearc system to protect the front lens of the TS-E 17mm. I like that idea, but which one?
Asked by: James
I have used the TS-E 17 for a couple of years. Absolutely love this lens. I however don't want to put anything between my great UD L series glass and the subject. I will admit that I was concerned about the protruding front element at first. However the concerns have faded with use. I usually have the lens cap in place unless I'm taking a shot, but have trekked about in major cities like Chicago and D.C. with the lens ready to go. I do recommend that you cary a good cleaning kit in your bag, and as with all optics keep 'em clean. This lens is absolutely awesome - go shoot and get comfortable with working with such an outstanding piece of glass!

question

Do these (17mm TS) come with an instruction manual or just a generic instruction sheet that covers all canon lenses( that's what mine came with)?
Asked by: Felix A.
The best information I have found has been on YouTube. Do a search for tilt shift lens and go from there.
